YouTube is trying to crack down on bad links, impersonation and ASCII art annoyances, but its changes appeared to be very controversial. The service is trying to fight a new wave of spam, but it sticks with its controversial decision to tie the system to Google+. The company introduced the original changes in early November to make sure that YouTube comments would become conversations that matter to users. YouTube channel owners now have more tools to moderate comments and block certain keywords.
Within the last months, creators have loudly complained that the recent changes have fuelled a new wave of spam. Some of them even turned off their comments after facing lots of links to virus websites, advertisers, self-advertisers and spam. The company is aware of the problems, admitting that the new rules introduce new opportunities for abuse and lots of users take advantage of them.
YouTube had to roll out updates. They included better recognition of bad links and impersonation attempts. The company also changed how long comments can be displayed for, and improved ASCII art detection.
YouTube knows that initially the spam problem made it very hard to use the new system, but the company is glad to see more of people getting involved as it has fixed the troubles. New tools, including threaded conversations and formatted comments, were added thanks to the service users. The company also promised to add extra tools to allow channel owners to bulk-moderate their comments.
However, one controversial point remains – the deeper integration of YouTube and Google+. Even the site’s own co-founder Jawed Karim has already complained on his channel that now he for some reason needs a Google+ account to comment on a video.
A Change.org petition has been signed to demand that streaming service stop forcing its members to create Google+ accounts to add comments. The petition has so far gathered over 200,000 signatures, and there is lots of anger about this particular change. The industry observers believe that this may well flare up again at the sight of YouTube dealing with spam problems without addressing (or even acknowledging) the arguments around its social network.

It means you are forced to become Google user first before you can be a serious Youtube user. Youtube is free with a pre-condition!

Yeah, I found one morning that I was no longer able to comment unless I got with google+. That was it, I aint commented since. Shame really but no way am I being forced to get with google+, no way, on pure principal, and who trusts google anyway, not me thats for damn sure. I just use it now to view music and trailers etc. Commenting is a thing of the past for me. They have ruined it for a lot of people. It was apparently also supposed to help stop negative comments etc, what a load of nonsense, take a look, there are still negative comments everywhere. what ever the reason, I wont be forced to join anyone. Crazy.
Your right number 2, I have not created a google account just to comment on YouTube videos either. What a pain in the arse to go through! I went on YouTube daily until the change! Now, only when I need to look up a movie trailer or watch something for instructions.
These people get above their station and think you'll put up with whatever crap they introduce for a few extra bucks, vote with your feet and march somewhere else.

Well, since half the internet already requires you to login to your Facebook account before you can comment, I'm not at all surprised. Easiest way in the world to curtail free speech. Oh, well. I'll STILL never sign-up for any of those friggin' social media sites!

I hate Google+. Then again, I use Google products all the time, everyday. Heck, my new phone wouldn't even let me enter my user data and setup e-mail accounts unless I had a Google+ account already. I really hate "Hangouts". Sad times are coming.
@7 Get an android phone aand put something besides Android on it, like Replicant. Links are at the prissm-break website.
I see that little message where thhe comments used to be, every time I watch a youtube video. It has that "OK" button on it, and I will not click it because IT IS NOT OK. I want to know where the "NOT OK" button is.
you can circumvent the system by registering with google+ using maskme by Abine (part of the DNT or do not track me package)it`s free and will give you anonymity from Google+ since double verification is pointless unless its part of logging the users activities and email address,I use this method as well as DNT so that Google+ and Google analytics know no more of my activities than they need too as such logins give more information than is required, the same can be said for ET which has twitter badge, facebook connect , Google+1 and Google analytics all blocked by myself on ET pages since all are attempting to track me here. ( ;^D )
Given that the NSA has recently been reported as having tapped into Google servers from outside the USA which is supposedly legal for them to do so since it is outside the constraints of the USA`s laws it is only prudent not to allow the NSA unfettered tracking of my or anyone elses activities so advise those who do not currently block them to do so for their own protection, fortune favours the prepared mind,n`est pas.
@7 if you use the same input data for google+ login used on your pc using maskme on your phone you will have anonymity and be able to set up accounts, personally using the 3 email rule advised by most security experts is the best way to go,1 email addy for bank and bills,2nd addy for friends and family and 3rd addy for social networking and other sites,by this method you do not give anyone the keys to your kingdom so to speak and keep yourself and your information safer online. In regard to social networking using a pseudonym and not posting selfies aswell as using anonymox and Abine products enables you to keep anonymity in facebook and youtube, etc. ( ;^D
Ye it forced me to go onto google plus and set my age so can watch 18+ vids without it keep asking if im old anoth not been on it since tho. I think its just a con so it looks like more are using it.

Interesting angle by #9. maskme etc. Our comments are like pigeons...they do come home to roost. Type your email address into a search engine. You will see comments you made on various forums 10 years ago!
it's okay, i have a Google+ account!

@14 topaz very true comments I made 10 years ago on Sourceforge.net in regard Azureus forum and antzureus concept for development of decentralized torrents and plugins for various things is still there,I think one day I should take out a class action for my contribution against Vuze since all my ideas now have to be paid for LMAO if I was as litigious as those evil corporate American noodniks I would, but there again as an altruist the idea that I helped millions of people enjoy anonymity and the ability to obtain through p2p what was either financially outside their spectrum or to preview cams to see if it was worth paying for is reward enough, sometimes the rewards of helping others outweighs the financial gain and given vuze now previews new artists work for free and is working toward legitimizing torrents such a suite would be counter productive to the peoples interests something the corporate noodniks overlook when victimizing those using p2p for absurd amounts of money since we the people should be able to get a taste of what we intend to spend our money on and decide if it`s worth the expense to start with as well as allowing the disadvantaged and disabled the ability to see what is out of their reach normally.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW THAT'S AMAIZING !!
I don't mind the ASCII spam art. I agree that the comments are so terrible. IDK why Google doesn't admit that Google+ has sort of failed and wait for Facebook to have a serious flaw and then massively advertise it. Once people are annoyed at Facebook they will join other networks at their own will. I already see more people moving away from Facebook to the likes of instagram.
Search for orgasmatron lyrics by Motorhead, they are a warning and so true today.
Isn't there an extension for chrome called safemail which encrypts emails, firefox you can use Encipher.it or the encrypted communications add-on. Shame you can't encrypt youtube comments.
