The European Commission has provided the United States with a list of hoops it wants the country to follow before it starts trusting it. This is the result of revelations about National Security Agency and UK spying on everyone under its PRISM program.

The EC said that spying on its citizens, businesses and leaders was unacceptable and that people of European Union and the United States have to be reassured about protection of their personal information. In addition, the businesses also need to be reassured that the existing agreements between the two regions are both respected and policed.

The European Commission announced that it will set out actions supposed to help restore trust and strengthen information protection in transatlantic relations. They listed 6 areas that the European Union and the United States need to do to restore confidence.

The list includes swift adoption of EU's information protection reforms, improving the protection safeguards, and commitment from the United States for making use of a legal framework. The European Commission also wants to address its concerns in the on-going American reform process, as well as promoting privacy standards internationally.

The EC claims that everyone from the users to governments on both sides of the Atlantic want to gain from cooperation, based on strong legal safeguards and trust that they will be respected.

No avatarYou can't put "protections" on levying a (cold)war on your own people. It's still treason no matter what 'protections' are in place for the criminals spying on civilians while they're building drones made to hunt individuals in swarms with 150KW lasers (HELLADS drones). Stopkillerrobots dot org, prism-break dot org, and the stopwatchingus website all need people's support and participation if we are ever to end this tyrannical activity.

No avatari think the EU should stop trading with the us, close its airports to all flights originating there and extradite all us citizens that reside there in. after all and not that long ago the USofA threatened the uk withe the same embargo over the trad in bananas. it was cleared up with blaming a civil servant for over stepping their authority? might it not be time to use such measures?

Embolism avatarI think all of the above are correct, you can not police the police/NSA and GCHQ they either stop spying on their citizens or everyone can expect to be spied upon unilaterally it is not selective for the most part and if those in the upper echelons of partner Governments think they are above the NSA spying on them they are living up a river in Egypt called Denial.Once you allow an Orwellian big brother super-power to control what sites you can visit, that watches and reads your correspondence and selectively controls what we are told and see through gagging orders and site closures then we lose the right of free thinking individuals and become prisoners without the right of free speech, unfettered access to information and all privacy we previously had and for what reason is this being done, certainly not to stop pedophiles on the dark web/net and most certainly not to catch terrorists, but as a control mechanism so we can be spoon fed their sh1te and lies without the ability to use the internet egregiously in freely communicating, learning the truth and developing.Someone tell Obama and Cameron the Sheeple are not for penning up like cattle and being kept dumb, free the Internet and give the W.W.W back to the people it was created for by TimBL.

alchemy316 avataryou do realize most non nerds could give a shit case in point more in uk and us care about bs than leaks or syrian issues etc and @5 thats the single worst idea ive heard of really you realize germany is the only saving grace they have and as it stands the eu did alot of spying themselves with help from us . now lets look at facts they talk big game but the eu just met with us leaders "Echoing Merkel, Austria's foreign minister, Michael Spindelegger, said, "We need to re-establish with the US a relationship of trust, which has certainly suffered from this." aka bend at the will of nsa spying if you learned anything over the years despite the us and how bad you all like to think it is the eu cannot at all in no way in hell cut ties with us socially nor economically no way nor can asia .. please research why that is i cant write a book here but be realistic the spying will work into data trade off like the us did with russia right before snowden dropped these bombs still most i run into and ask about this just dont care.

Embolism avatar[email protected] does have some rather extreme ideas he is right in the fact that some control measures have to be put in place as with 200 politicians and 35 world leaders being monitored information gathered illicitly by the NSA could potentially not only cause political or financial instability in countries, but also lead to other concerns involving internal security issues. The DPP in the UK for instance has had concerns and have been having talks as to setting up a committee headed by the leader of the opposition to watchdog the GCHQ,MI5 and MI6 so that undemocratic American policies are not used within the UK www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/nov/28/nsa-leaks-uk-security-services after all not only is spying wrong but given the torture first and prosecute later tactics of America there has to be a watchdog above and beyond the lickspittle Mr Cameron who has given free reign to the NSA`s Global domination of Cyberspace, one can only speculate the NSA has either some very juicy dirt on him (from phone tapping him) or is slipping him large cash as they did to Tony Blair who made 25 million out of his time as PM.As pointed out @7 there is little chance of a trade embargo in a recession and there is also little chance that the spying will stop, but there is a glimmer of hope that they will have a committee with the power to temper NSA abuse of the spying and undemocratic use of such.either way America is digging a very deep hole with its spying on those who have helped to implement this invasive intrusion in to our privacy and the illegal shutting down of sites and unconscionable tapping of information from Google and other sites. There are many people still ignorant of the Global schism created from the phone tapping and monitoring but daily more and more sheeple are getting the picture that it is not a good thing and even in the USA it has not exactly given positive results since it`s implementation,it has not stopped terrorists or pedophiles nor has it been wholly accurate and amongst those innocents falsely accused of wrong doing I am sure there are many that care and to what end is all this spying for if not to stop terrorism hmm,www.washingtonsblog.com/2013/10/nsa-spying-did-not-result-in-one-stopped-terrorist-plot-and-the-government-actually-did-spy-on-the-bad-guys-before-911.html

Embolism avatar@9 that statement may hold true with soviet and Chinese block countries, but to spy on your allies is political suicide and for America to be caught doing it to its overseas partners smacks of stupidity far beyond any faux pas normally produced in American intelligence not counting Vietnam,Iraq and a few others whereby the intelligence was flawed or fabricated by the CIA/NSA.

majordik avatarInteresting pots and allot of them correct.
My opinion is everybody spies on each other regardless they are allies or "enemies" period.
I think allot of the idiots sniveling and crying in the EU are basically jealous because they can't pull a "hover" like the good ol USA can on information.
Hell the big companies are doing it all the time and call it target marketing.
So the bottom line is everybody do what they should be doing is taking care of their own security. Use PGP and other good programs..
This would be a very boring and Fascist world without the USA to pick on now wouldn't it?
Regardless of the USA'a faults; think of any country that has come to the plate and done more for this world than any other country has? The USA..
When there are major disaster in the world nature/man made who always shows up with the most and the best in personnel to help? Yep the USA. Recently the Philippines. I don't see any Chinese aid.. No Soviet Aid.... French aid... British aid...
Yet when the USA tells the EU to handle they can't they have proven that over and over; another case Serbia. The USA finally had to step in and stop the genocide going on because the EU couldn't handle it..
Finally when the USA doesn't respond fast enough with "help" say in the title-wave disaster; they get crapped on all over.
Yet even despite the large resources the USA has and the major disasters they have had.. Did anyone in the EU even offer to come and help? No they didn't...
Again despite the faults the USA has, who would you rather do what has to be done in the world? China? Russia? The EU? LMFAO towards them..
What country has shed more blood in this world and spent more wealth helping other countries? Not again China, Russia, or the EU. Yes it has been the USA.
Before all the trolling starts you have to remember every country is run by self centered POS, the major population are not to blame for what goes on. From my visits many Americans the "population" has grown very weary of all the blood, death of sons and daughters as well as all the wealth spent are thinking enough already. So you all in the EU go hurray finally the USA is going to butt out of world affairs; but when the crap hits the fan and you look on the horizon and see nothing coming; what are you going to do?

Embolism avatar@18 have a rethink about American dead in conflicts outside their own country in wars they did not instigate and you will see they may have lost 10`s of thousands of men but also wiped out ten`s of thousands of those who`s side they were fighting on in so called friendly fire, the greatest losses they ever had was in their own civil war at over 650,000 of their own citizens in ww2 there was 418,000 dead Americans and over 450,000 British died so check your figures and remember we were fighting for 4 years longer than the USA.France lost 2.5 million in ww2,I wont go into other conflicts since the USA has only really existed officially for 100 or so years ,but since 1939 many more died than the US.France,GB,have been in more conflicts overseas in more countries and also been first on more scenes of trouble they did not create and in supporting charities I won`t even go into the red cross and aid from other countries,So in defending the USA in regard death tolls they have suffered check some facts and check out which ones they instigated as with Vietnam,Iraq,Afghanistan (whereby the are supporting the government against the general populaces wishes till 2024 a fruitless pursuit now they have opened up the Iraq border to Al queda)and god forbid the stupid posturing in the gulf leads to Iranian conflict as we still have 67 years of Cameron's austerity plan to get over from Iraq still.I won`t go into J.Edgar Hoover (Hover lmao)but that was in a time without detente and cold war paranoia, the fact is America in the last 10 years may have been in many overseas aid programs and Kudos to them for such, but when it comes to starting wars as with training bin Laden and al-Queda (state sponsored terrorism)and with killing friendly's as with Iraqs 1.5 million genocide they are the leaders of the pack, which to rational minds does not make them particularly loved,by 200 diplomats and 35 world leaders being tapped it does make overseas partnerships untrustworthy and prone to collapse unless mutual agreements are set in stone as are rules of engagement supposed to be it did`nt stop the killing of friendly Brits from occurring in Iraq in one example other than the collateral murder from wikileaks.

Embolism avatar@18 I am an old git and did`nt see the USA flying any supporting flags on the falklands or a flotilla of American ships blockading the Islands and given south America is closer to the USA and the UK is 11,000 miles away our allies did a bang up job of not supporting us there. So not always the 1st on scene of others conflicts and not always the greatest player in Aid,but they do know how to make war on others.

majordik avatar20/21 - so what point are you trying to make?
You ignored Church hill's causing the deliberate deaths of a minimum 50,000.
You also ignore the fact and spout body counts? Yet the "yanks" bailed out Europe not once but twice..
Again so what is your point?
You saying the "yank's" need to butt out of world affairs?
If that is the case the EU let hundreds of thousands die in Serbia because they couldn't or wouldn't do anything and the "yanks" finally had to step up and handle it.
As for Vietnam? Again what is your point?
Typical self centered entitlement demanding Tory libitard; always complaining and blaming others; yet continuously failing to provide a real workable solution of their own.
I will back the "Yank's" they have given trillions of dollars in aid, reconstruction and medical help than any other country on this planet and that is a fact.

Embolism avatarThe point other than Churchill is one word is that if you check the death tolls you will find the USA is not always where they are needed and not generally in the right, just to clarify NATO and British troops were in Serbia and Bosnia not just the USA and in 1964 in Vietnam 40,000 civilians were killed and the responsibility lay with the CIA,as I pointed out before the Americans are good at creating wars ,have not the greatest losses and have not always been first to conflict throughout history and when they make war on their own or others they do a good job of genocide, back to topic I would say when a nation turns inwards on itself to the degree that it argues with itself, goes contrary to its own laws and constitution, allows torture for evidence without trial and spies on its own citizens and overseas partners as well as foreign citizens in sovereign lands then it better watch its step lest it gets the heave ho in diplomatic if not trade departments and losses what it has gained in the last 13 years since the CIA/NSA whitepaper on Global domination of Cyberspace which outlined the use of such partnerships for its own ends.

Gaspode avatarYet again we hear the same old ill-informed claims of people who seem unable to take criticism when their country is caught doing wrong. I for one am so bored of hearing that the US is the squeaky clean global police responsible for the invention of everything including breathing that personally I'm done with ExtraTorrant. 'Yet the "yanks" bailed out Europe not once but twice..' is one I'm particularly sick of hearing. The ALLIES were victorious in WW1 and WW2 and no one country could have done it alone. The input of the US in both wars was very very welcome though in WW2 it was much more significant but enough of body counting...as there are 20-40 million dead Russian people alone that outweigh all arguments as to who paid more in WW2. As for the faults of countries and governments they ALL have secrets and skeletons, we should accept this. Americas mistake was not intelligence gathering but getting caught gathering where an ally really really should not.

@ 13 - eddy - Your attitude is EXACTLY why intelligent sensible US citizens get stereotyped along with you. The EU will act as a unified body with possibly diplomatic and trade repercussions, probably with the support of other non-EU countries. And I know your next statement will prove my point further with an utter lack of appreciaton or insight into what it might really cost the US to have NO ALLIES LEFT. There is a well known saying in civilizations a lot older than 300 years...'America is very childish' and edddy you've proved the point.

@18 - majordik... UK aid to the Philippines currently stands at £50,000,000+ though I didn't check any of the other countries you mentioned. I suspect if you look you might need to apologise elsewhere. The information is there if you want to look for it. The US did not invent nor has any claim to the being the global champion of humanitarianism, unfortunately too many individuals of all countries are insular and look further than their own media for facts. As for leaving out 'all the whining and snivelling' it's clear that if someones well thought out counter argument appears that way to you then I suggest you become a more tolerant, better educated person.

Embolism avatarnuff said majordik, others have taken the point and if you read through the reasons for Serbia you will see why,yet another coup d`tat which did involve Britain and the EU.My personal view in respect of the spying and social engineering of the sheeple is that it has not proven efficacious in the USA so why introduce it further or propagate it,this latest wrinkle in the plan of world domination will not stop it, but it will give impetus to the watchdogs to make better control of it for themselves without the ever friendly USA monitoring their own controlled partnerships. (;^D)

The yanks and their anti-socialist sentiments were the entire reason the European nazi's were tolerated to fester in the first place..

Again so what is your point?
You saying the "yank's" need to butt out of world affairs? As long as yanks is equivalent to imperialist capitalists, yeah please do!

Hundreds of thousands died in Serbia because of elitist schemes.
