Hackers Stole Passwords from Social Networks

Hackers have recently managed to nick millions of Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Yahoo passwords by installing key logging software on millions of personal computers. The security experts confirmed that the malware was capturing log-in credentials for key sites over the past month and sending the data to a server controlled by the hackers.

Back in November, the security researchers tracked that server to Holland and discovered compromised credentials for over 93,000 websites, including 318,000 Facebook accounts, 70,000 Google accounts, 60,000 Yahoo accounts, 22,000 Twitter accounts and 8,000 LinkedIn accounts – all hacked. The tech giants were immediately notified of the breach, and perhaps this is why Google was asking me to change my password a few weeks ago. Thus far, there’s no evidence that the hacked passwords have been ever used.

The security experts hadn’t found out how the malware got onto so many PCs. The intruders set up the key logging software to rout sensitive data via a proxy server, so it was impossible to track down which PCs are currently infected.

The hacking campaign started in the end of October, and it might be still ongoing. The researchers believe that there are some other proxy servers running the attack which they haven’t found yet. The malware running in the background is hidden, but antivirus software and the latest patches for browsers, Adobe (ADBE) and Java will be able to detect it and prevent it from running. Secure your PC.

sn3h1t87 avatarActually, if I'm reading this correctly, since this was keylogging software installed on people's PCs, it has nothing to do with breaking into the sites themselves. All they did was record the keystrokes for ANY site the person logged into. So in theory, they could have gotten passwords for financial and government sites as well, if the computers that had this virus were used to log into those sites.

xiTATix avatarCyberjack, if someone were to open an online bank account and google was their email, when the bank sent the login details and confirmation to the new account holder it could possibly come in handy to the hackers, don't you think?

Embolism avatarR.A.T`s and server patches are old skool and generally picked up by Antivirus or firewalls with a sandbox like Comodo, but if Microsoft can drop an unsolicited payload on 3 million windows PC`s in one hit and avoid firewalls or circumvent them to begin with then anything is possible.

Embolism avatar@2 there are various ways to get into facebook from social engineering as in the you have won 10 million free chips scam whereby peeps click on a msg link and get server patched as well as getting them to log in with their own details or as in Backtrack users accessing the login data to 1/2 a million accounts an hour, where there`s a will there is a way.

Embolism avatarFacebook is and has been daily hacked since it`s conception, wherever there is social networking there is social engineering of the sheeple by governments and the hacker, the governments do it quite openly by eliminating privacy and creating a database of all users to profile, hackers do it by being added and by using information given to access you from information the unwary person see`s as innocuous.
