Roman Vega, 49, who pleaded guilty 4 years ago to creating a popular Internet marketplace for selling stolen financial account information, has received 18 years jail time. Vega was dubbed as one of the world’s most prolific cybercriminals by the US Department of Justice and was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in co-founding the notorious portal CarderPlanet.

Media reports revealed that Vega was originally arrested in Cyprus this past February and extradited to the US. The cybercrime mastermind pleaded guilty back in 2009 to conspiracies to commit money laundering and access device fraud and has been in custody since. The authorities didn’t comment why it took them so long to sentence Vega, especially as he admitted the crime in 2009. One would have thought that even with an 18-year sentence, the criminal will be up for parole in a few years based on the 4 years he served.

According to actinghttp://extratorrent.cc/article_add/# assistant Attorney General, Vega helped create one of the largest and most sophisticated credit card fraud websites in the cybercrime underworld. Indeed, CarderPlanet was the best and busiest Internet marketplaces trading stolen financial data, computer hacking services and money laundering, or that’s what the Department of Justice is saying.

sn3h1t87 avatarFrankly, considering the economic damage he did, the thousands (if not millions) of people he screwed over and caused pain and suffering to, the time wasted to clean up his mess...
18 years is quite small, I'd have no problem with executing him. If people who commit crimes behind computer keyboards were actually punished more often, we might have less of it. As it is, the fraud and abuse online are really more like the wild west than the 21st century.

Embolism avatarWhen people commit murder and are released on license after 10 years a sentence for white collar crime in excess of murder is in itself vastly too great a penalty especially when almost double the sentence for murder at 18 years, what people fail to appreciate is that all banks and financial agencies have insurance against fraud, theft, long firming and numerous other financial scams so nobody has really been hurt with possibly the Insurers who make billions a year from the innocent people who never claim on their car, house or other insurance and can afford the losses. It must also be said in his mitigation that he was not the sole founder but the co-founder of the site and not solely responsible for acts perpetrated on said site, given the losses were insured in 99% of cases and that he was not the only culprit 5 years would`ve been harsh enough by any ones standards.I have known real criminals who have shot a guys knee caps off and only got 4 years and a murderer get out on license after 10 years so 18 years implies they think this guy is Hannibal lechter instead of a digital grifter.

Embolism avatarTo further give perspective in such an outlandish sentence it must be said there have been cases such as the creator of the sasser worm and 4 of its derivatives whereby losses were in tens of millions in lost revenue to companies as well as adversely affecting millions of users computers, but who only got 6 months sentence which I believe was served mainly with probation.I am sure the D.O.J is intent on protecting the assets of the big corporations with such overkill in sentencing, but ultimately is it really in anyone's interest for the state to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep him incarcerated for such a period and will such incarceration reform him or make him bitter and twisted leading to much greater acts upon his eventual release.

Fidius avatari agree actually with post number 1 Vega should be eradicated from this planet period.....as for comparing him to people like everyone on this site who leech movies and the like there is no comparison, yeah i leech a movie or two for home enjoyment but steel from the ordinary joe bloggs in the street absolutely not....

Embolism avatar@5 given that they treat all cybercrime as theft and people have been sentenced to 1 year for downloading one film you will find many of the same opinion here, especially those who have downloaded 1000`s of films and programs over the years who by the same logic would do many life sentences given the American policies in said regard, lest we forget we are the same people who commit crimes behind the keyboard (paraphrasing no:1).

Embolism avatar@7 read what is written do not just copy others comments,we are all guilty the only difference is that the losses incurred by Romans antics ultimately cost the card issuers and banks insurance underwriters in lost revenue and what we do here in downloading or uploading films costs the movie studios , recording studios, software companies, publishing houses, etc, etc,it does not make it any less of a crime however you view it with the exception of pseudo moralistic intent, one hopes if you are ever captured and caught with half a dozen films you don`t cry like a baby when given 18 years as there are no variations on cybercrime sentencing,it is to the legal system all theft no matter the moral imperative,so do unto others as you would like to be done by and judge not lest ye be judged.I am sure many will have heard of the dread Pirate Roberts and the silk road and I wonder what thoughts people have in regard someone who sold drugs on his site and profited by others misery should receive in sentencing if they are all but ready to lynch a digi-grifter,lol.comments obviously from people who have never spent 1 day behind a cell door.

Embolism avatarI decline the offer Sam sources some good and thought provoking topics some of which should concern all since the Man has never really come up for consistent guidelines for digital crime other than what studios claim their gross losses to be and an estimation of what the perpetrator has cost them and on that basis I must`ve cost them billions since the invention of p2p and bittorrent according to their excessive court claims. Moreover if they were to make a case that as the progenitor for decentralised torrents in Azureus plugin by Parg I might be held accountable for 10`s of millions of people illegally downloading millions more films,so given such reasoning by the FBI and NSA I will see you all in 2058 if I get parole. (:^D)
