Tens of thousands of households across London were left without phone and broadband services for 3 days. The suspected thieves looking for copper left people cut from the outside world by cutting crucial fiber-optic trunk cables.
This was one of the biggest outages in BT’s network ever, with the services going down since Tuesday to Friday last week. This left around 37,000 Sky customers without phone or broadband. TalkTalk was also affected, and some of its clients lost their phone connections, though many calls were rerouted.
BT blamed a malicious attack for the outage. It turned out that cables accessed via a manhole were sliced open by intruders at night who were thought to have been looking for copper wire. The latter has a high resale value on the black market. However, the thieves found only fiber-optic cables – those can carry huge amounts of data, but have no value on the black market. BT announced that several engineers were sent on site to work round the clock to reconnect people: according to media reports, a team of ten engineers from BT’s Openreach network division were working to splice the cables back together in a crucial part of the company’s core London network.
Although some areas were soon back online, the disruption has come during a peak period for online Christmas shopping, and people failed to make purchases in time to meet the postal delivery deadlines. The company officially apologized to all affected customers.

This is a perfect opportunity to replace all that copper with fiber. They have to put something back up anyway, might as well upgrade. And they do not have to worry about it being stolen again! ... Sky and Virgin broadband are virtually unusable they're so slow! And their customers are mostly old people who don't even know they have the internet or how to use it!

#4 either needs to either A) post in his native language, relearn English, or C) lay off the drugs, because I have absolutely NO idea what he's trying to say!! Looks like a bunch of jumbled words, and if he ever went to an English class he obviously FAILED!
#3 needs to read better ... they were LOOKING for copper, but all there WAS was fiber-optic ... how can they upgrade to something faster than the fastest medium we have? Or replace something that wasn't there to start with?

people really need to learn how to spell and write a sentence correctly.
they also need to be able to comprehend what they read, especially before they comment.
failing english isn't an excuse for poor grammar or spelling, i failed english all the time, only because math and science were my favorite and i still have better grammar and spelling than people that passed english.
most of the problem is laziness or not caring when writing.

6 ) Very funny 6; number 3 meant of course to do upgrades to fiber that are still copper for i'd guess the sys isn t 100% fiber and knowing the providers they sren t in a hurry to upgrade until their are slammed for they hate investments to their systems.

3 Days for BT to Splice in a few ft of Fiber-Optic cable......No wonder UK is behind the rest of Europe in Fiber-Optic availabillity hmmm ....and the average UK household is paying about £30 to £50 pm for Broadband/Tv you can bet there will be no refunds or good will gestures from the sevice providers
somebody either fed up with the cost of their broadband or sick of paying to be monitored by American copyright organizations through the NSA.most likely not pikeys as they would just steal the manhole covers and drain covers for scrap, could be bank/store robbers trying to isolate a nearby BMS system and cut comms to the buildings management system to gain access after all a good time for them taking loads of money this time of year, any other ideas for potentially why it was done and whether they truly were stupid enough to believe the cable had copper in it.!!
so something as valuable and critical as fibre optic was easily accessed by a manhole, talk about need for security.
