“Our Family Wedding” sounds awful from its very premise – the trite story of an engaged couple with their parents hating each other, made even worse by racial stereotypes.
This so called comedy, directed by Rick Famuyiwa, shows us Mexican descent Lucia (played by America Ferrara), engaged to a black guy Marcus (performed by Lance Gross). Lucia does not tell her father about having a boyfriend, let alone a fiancé, since Marcus is not Hispanic – her dad Miguel (played by Carlos Mencia) works as a repairman and is a strong racist, though it isn’t said directly in the film as we are supposed to like the man. Lucia’s Mexican grandma, looking like an exaggerated cartoon, once seeing Marcus, literally faints and falls to the floor. Why? Well, probably in some authors’ world Mexican women have a terror of black guys. Who knows.
However, the film is not so edgy and daring as you might have imagined. It's just middle-of-the-road, with Forest Whitaker as Marcus' dad Brad, working as a radio DJ and loving ladies. He does like Lucia, but not her father, as they coincidentally met earlier, after Miguel had towed Brad's car. The racial tension grew when Miguel called him "bro," getting the reply "homie," and so on. Both men are perfectly shown as… juvenile idiots.
Honestly speaking, the only really funny character in the movie is Lucia's sister, discussing the desire of an engaged girl not to get so bored and domesticated as their mother did.
Actually it’s not one but two movies. The first is a madcap farce: the goat, brought by someone to the wedding, eating some Viagra; Lucia’s serenades outside Marcus’ house, making coyotes howl because of her terrible voice; a bakery food fight between Brad and his assistant slash love interest. All this is not funny at all, not clever, just a farce and nothing more. The second one is a melodrama of love, dreams and relationships within a family. The whole idea seems very boring and cliched. Such simple storyline of a film has to be made human, warm, and the most important for a comedy – funny, with at least some believable characters (not like the fathers – adults acting like teenagers, whose ingredients of a character vary across a movie alongside with jokes). Well, at least not funny Carlos Mencia fits well into a not funny film. This is not even black and white film as it is on the cover, just… grey.
