UK Filters Tech Websites

It didn’t become a surprise for anyone that David Cameron’s wonderful “save the kids” censorship turned out to be just another attempt to prevent people from finding out information. The first victim of Cameron’s filter was tech writer Peter Hansteen from Norway – for some reason his site was declared out of bounds.
_71300634_71300633.jpg

The only suggestion he could come up with was that once he published a story which referred to a picture of “a blonde chick with a cute pussy”. In reality the picture was of baby poultry and cats. Hansteen’s website is mainly tech content, and its resources include the hourly updated list of greytrapped spam senders.

Another victim is the national Norwegian Unix Users’ group website, which is also blocked in the UK now. Apparently, David Cameron just doesn’t want people to find out about open source.

The main site for USENIX, the US-based but in fact quite international Unix user group, is also blocked in the parental control regime. Looks like Prime Minister finds Unix and Linux immoral and something kids should not see.

Unsurprisingly enough, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is blocked in the country, as well as amnesty.org.uk. The latter is dumb enough to censor, because it disagreed with Teresa May’s decisions on extradition.

The British can’t reach slashdot.org, linuxtoday.com, blogspot.com, ArsTechnica, openbsd.org, freebsd.org, geekculture.com and even linux.com. “Free downloading” mention maybe a reason?..

Some believe that all these bodies and groups can launch a lawsuit against the UK government. In fact, this online filter is interfering with free trade for absolutely no reason. While children of today are already ignorant and self-absorbed, UK Prime Minister seems determined to keep them that way.

No avatarThese sites are only filtered if you set the device to super nanny mode. In this mode even O2's site is blocked. Pirates Bay is blocked totally, I wonder about ET? Apparently there is a way around it regardless, can anyone from the UK reply, let me know if you can see ET?

No avatarlol66, i think you may be somewhat mis informed regarding filtering and censoring. It's not any kind of setting on a device, it is infact being done by Internet Service Providers within the UK who have been told to implement these restrictions within their networks. The restrictions can vary between different service providers however, meaning website's and domains which are blocked by one provider, may not be blocked by another. I am with SKY (bSKYbg) and for me extratorrent is infact blocked, same too for 1337x just to name a few. when trying to navigate to these domains, i am instantly redirected to for example. There are a number of ways around the restrictions, but the quickest and easiest is Tor, which i am using now. another, slightly more complicated and time consuming way would be a VPN.

Embolism avatarUsing a proxy or program like anonymox you can circumvent the ISP`s block,Tor is another free way around it,of course USENIX will be blocked by an idiot like Mr Cameron it has S-E-X in it,They really have`nt thought through how hard to police the internet really is and by cutting one range of IP addresses they will affect whole ranges of content that have no need of filtering (unless it`s intentional and politically motivated to keep the masses ignorant)such as amnesty.org.

Dominatez avatarDavid Cameron to put it politely is an imbecile. We can get round his dumb stupid blocks by simply using TOR, A vpn or changing DNS, use a proxy etc. Simplest for me is to use extratorrentlive.com. I am waiting for virginmedia to try to push blocks on sites then i am going to complain as it violates my terms and conditions.

No avatarI'm from UK and already blocked from several top torrent sites etc
ET has been blocked, I can access via extratorrentlive.com but don't like to as it then becomes more of a text based site (NO images)
so I access via HideMyAss.com which means I am then blocked from commenting on any post etc for some reason!

Mr_T_Cat avatarLynxeffect, lol66 is in fact correct. There are two separate policies that have been introduced by the UK government. The first was started with the total blocking of Thepiratebay. This was later added to with other torrent and pirate material sites, like E.T, ISOhunt etc. These blocking of these sites is mandatory and done at source by the isp, the end user cannot opt out. Although as we all know you can get around it.
The second policy evolves around a so called set of family-friendly filters. Which will be automatically turned on by the isp by default. You will however be able to turn them of if you wish. These filters however will cover a very varied spectrum of sites. From Sex, gambling, drugs and radical religious parties to name but a few.

vapourtrail avatarJust a small note it's true in the UK we now cannot access ET TPB and many other torrent sites thanks to the collusion of the ISP's with the government to "protect the innocents" but strangely enough these blocks don't seem to be in place on my smartphone, and most of the kiddies seem to access the web through phones these days, regarding getting round the blocks TOR is a bit slow, VPN is much better I rent a seedbox for only ten quid a month access it through SFTP and have VPN through it best tenner you'll ever spend!

COMPRENDeDEFUNCT avatar@exp. use firefox and add the anonymox add on,
google how to do that if you get stuck.
just turn it on when you want sites that are blocked, then turn it off afterwards so it doesnt slow down the rest of your browsing,.
after you get used to using it you can play with the settings to get it to turn on automatically when you open those sites bookmarks, very simple really, browse everywhere as before.

Darkan9el avatarThe censorship of information, is just another way to dumb down the masses, they are scared that we can find out what they are really up to. This censorship is NOT to protect children, that can be done by educating parents on the internet and taking more interest in their children and their lives. This is just a trigger to activate the emotional responses by creating a fear and in doing so you censor yourselves; very clever.

Much like they used the twin towers to bring in "war on terror" that now gives them the power to detain anyone they "suspect" of being a terrorist, which boils down to detain anyone for no reason. This "Save the kids" <see what they did? they used your language its not save the children that's too impersonal, they use "kids" to trigger you into a fear reaction, I'm surprised they didn't go with "your" instead of "the" either way it's another sly move for an agenda hidden.

It wouldn't surprise me if they also started to deal with "the right to bear arms" in America soon by escalating the apparently random shootings that keep happening, disarming Americans makes it a lot easier to control them, lets see what happens eh!

Embolism avatar@24 if you read my comment @3 you would read about anonymox, just to help you with it you may also wish to add external ip to your firefox browser as sometimes you have to refresh your ip in external ip when switching proxies with anonymox as you will notice the IP`s do not match until refreshed, also setting anonymox to delete cookies is smart.Anonymox will work in ET as long as your using a proxy not on the blacklist NL3B 206.190.158.72 works fine.
