Apparently, they are over protective parents who forbid their children play in the street. The researchers suggest that the only reason children spend so much time on social media websites is because their parents don’t let them out of the house. Those are terrified that their kids will be snatched by pedophiles or bullied by others.

While a lot of teenagers would love to socialize face-to-face with their friends, their parents just won’t let them. The researchers pointed out that teenagers aren’t actually addicted to social media but rather are addicted to each other. The problem is that they are forbidden to hang out in real life, so they have to do so online. In result, today’s teenagers have neither the time nor the freedom to hang out. This makes their avid migration to social media a rational response to a crazy situation.

The researchers also pointed out that lots of high school students flock to football games not because they like the game itself, but because they can meet their friends in an unstructured context. Boys spend the game chatting, ignoring the field and their phones, because they don’t need Instagram when their friends are right next to them.

The disadvantage of this situation is that children aren’t learning any valuable face-to-face skills and instead may fail to handle the real world. The researchers described the fear of kids becoming victims of pedophiles as completely irrational and that panic seems to be the best gift the US ever gave to Facebook.

crazymichael avatarThis is bulshi* i'm only 24 and back when i was a kid which was in the 90s-early 00s kids use to play outside all the time and then soon as game consoles and social media came along all people wanted to do was chat online or play on the PlayStation 1 with their mates.It is rediculous people chat over Facebook to there next door mates when they can either go to there house or play outside with them.The world would be better without social network sites and online game play.Even men in there 40s still play video games this is how bad the world is changing and why i hope the world ends next year.I'm not on any social network site and when i go out for a drink with my mates i see them on there phone checking there Facebook or Twitter.It's a f*cking website where you press a couple of keys behind a screen not face to face conversation.

Flip956 avatarI've seen high school students at football games surrounded by friends and STILL they have their phones in their faces. Everywhere I go, regardless of the event, it seems adults and teens alike are always looking at their phones. I'm sure it's for different reasons but they do seem addicted to wanting to do anything with technology and the internet rather than be fully involved with the events at the moment.

No avatarWho Is Responsible for Kids’ Online Addiction? NO ONE, just because they think they wirte this. that means researchers are doing it to, so they are in the same boat as the rest of us.

Children have the same rights as everyone else. I also agree with freedom speech etc.

alklimke avatar@1 you hit the nail on the head, and lets not fool ourselves, as a parent your children are always your responsibility, well at least until they get a job and move out.

crazymichael avatar@8 true but if they don't socialize in the real world and just chat behind screens and play games 10 hours a day not only it will make them lazy how do you think they will act when they get older.

No avatarLet's be honest, there is no such thing as online addiction.
Researchers and self-proclaimed experts have diluted and perverted the word "addiction" to mean doing anything and everything they don't approve of.

Anything kids have ever liked to do adults have bitched about. In my day we watched to much TV, for my dad it was rock and roll, Grandpa hung out at the pool hall, I'm not sure but I think for Great-Grandpa it was probably something terrible like pushing a hoop down the street with a stick.

I think adults are addicted too bitching about teens.

overfiend1976 avatar1 Inability to consistently Abstain;
2 Impairment in Behavioral control;
3 Craving; or increased “hunger” for drugs or rewarding experiences;
4 Diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships; and
5 A dysfunctional Emotional response.

All 5 of those are needed for an addiction. But, of course, these new age a-holes like to think that only one or two of them at a time an addiction make. Nope. Sorry. You fail. Go back to basic understand of the addiction response and try again, thanks. Spending time on the internet isn't a dysfunctional emotional response, because, in this modern society, our methods of communication have changed, and therefore, social media interaction IS the norm, and thus, not considered a dysfunction. This fact also negates part 4 of the addiction criteria. Also, I don't believe that the internet 'impairs behavioral control.' Seems like more psychobabble labeling fun.
