Game of Thrones has become the most pirated show once again, with almost 6 million downloads via BitTorrent. It is followed by Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. Over 50% of downloads occurred in the first week after Game of Thrones aired, and the total exceeds the number of traditional viewers in the United States. Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead accounted for 4.2 and 3.6 million downloads accordingly. Another piracy record broken by Game of Thrones is more than 170,000 people sharing a copy of an episode simultaneously.
There are lots of reasons why Internet users prefer to pirate TV shows. The industry experts admit that HBO can be blamed for the massive piracy, as it keeps access to the show “exclusive” – even Netflix couldn’t buy the rights for any price.
However, the huge number of illegal downloads don’t bother the series’ makers all that much – instead, they admitted that piracy generated much-needed “cultural buzz” around Game of Thrones. In addition, CEO of HBO’s parent company stated that piracy brought more subscriptions for Time Warner and that the title of “most-pirated” is “better than an Emmy”.
In the meantime, the creators of The Walking Dead claimed that illegal downloads aren’t necessarily the blessing and don’t develop a habit to pay for it. Actually, they have a point, because it isn’t always easy for existing pirates to give up their habit – not even when the legal options appear and free. For instance, The Walking Dead was downloaded massively in the United States, despite the fact that AMC streamed it for free.
Apparently, this debate about whether online piracy is good or bad for movies and TV shows will continue throughout 2014, and beyond.

And the most pirated movie of 2013 was "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"
thought big bang theory would be near the top of most pirated
Myself,..I cant stand all the friggen commercials of regular tv, downloading a tv show means no commercials to me.
I'd of thought Vegas and The Following would of been there. The only reason I download TV episodes for free is because I get to watch them before there shown in the UK and I don't have to wait for ads to finish.

How can HBO run loss? We all pay for cable tv but we choose to download it (after it has been aired) and watch in pc due to ads-free, convenience of timings. But for those countries in which the show airs later lets just say they watch it in advance and pay later( pay for cable tv) because sooner or later all these shows will air in hbo or other channels.

Ba, streamed free in the US, funny last time i looked about nearly 6 Billion people didn't liver there......
Why is it when you burn a movie to a DVD, the picture seem s SQUISHED and not full screen?
'' ..However, the huge number of illegal downloads don’t bother the series’ makers all that much'' Really, are you kidding? Most people I know watch downloads because the adverts are removed as shows like Downton Abbey are practically unwatchable in their unedited form. Imagine what the commercial sponsors would do if everybody watched edited downloads.

Omg the industry is so stupid, when are they going to adapt to our needs and not constantly wanting to spoon feed us. People dont have the time due to work, kids or other commitments, in all honesty they should upload the shows it their websites and allow them to be streamed or watch from there. Then they can account for their ratings, but no they want to tell us what to do when to do it and how.
WAKE UP!!! ADAPT TO OUR NEEDS!!!!
"The Walking Dead was downloaded massively in the United States, despite the fact that AMC streamed it for free."
There are at least 3 common reasons for this:
1. They don't know it's on the site for free.
2. They know it's on the site for free but there are obnoxious ads recommending which car to drive to which store to buy which food, beverage, and butt wipes that can't be skipped over.
3. Quality. Many places have broadband, but not all, and HD streaming isn't an option for some people. A 'pirated' version can be watched in HD no matter what your connection speeds are.
thaks for the great reads as always sam keep up the great work...........

I think the main point is that unless you live in the US, there are no options to watch most shows but via torrents. All the networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, AMC, HBO, FOX) keep blocking foreign users. You can't watch anything on the BBC unless you are in the UK. On the other side, there are two shows that keep streaming full episodes regardless of your geographical location: South Park and The Colbert Report. Kudos to them.
tv is rubbish i like to watch things from start to finnish in one go .i dont want adverts or wait a week for the next part of the story.id rather buy the full series on dvd and watch without interuptions.if they dont get a release on disc then of course ill download it
Totally agree with #4 and a few other who mentioned commercials. I have been pretty sick for the past couple months and have had to watch regular TV. All the commercials on TV shows I enjoy like NCIS, Blacklist, Criminal Minds along with one or two others make their viewing almost impossible. The flow of any show needs to be continuous without 6-7 blocks of not just commercials but the same one over and over. Thanks Sam

@#17 Exactly. Also while I can watch on my t.v.things on Netflix or Hulu or anything I download, I CANT stream anything from a channels website to my t.v.AMC doesnt have a app channel like HBO GO or the like so streaming it on their website is useless unless I want to watch on my pc. Thats ok but if I can download the show and watch on my t.v. phone,pc or anything I want I probably wont bother streaming it
I DON'T LIKE TV :LOL

In the UK we have a stupid thing called a TV licence, so i actually save money by not having a tv and watching new progs, ad free, before they air here. Up yours BBC.

I used to watch this show on cable but here's the problem. I live in Canada my cable provider wants you to buy basic cable that's $100 a month then add on this and that package. After all the fees and taxes you pay $150 a month to watch 1 show. And you have to wait an entire week after it's been aired to catch it on demand because they take forever to put it up there. No thanks i'll just get it the next day and watch it when i want to watch it.
