The latest rumour is that Winamp and Shoutcast, the legacy digital music services owed by AOL which were planned to shutter, could be sold instead. Industry observers name Microsoft as a potential buyer, but now it looks like the services are being acquired by Radionomy - an international aggregator of Internet radio stations with its headquarters in Brussels.
Of course, it is just a rumour, but the Radionomy connection was first noticed by Bryon Stout on the Winamp forum and Carsten Knobloch - they noticed that Winamp’s nameservers, but not Shoutcast’s, had been handed over to Radionomy.
Some experts believe that the deal is for both properties and should be finalised soon, though it is unclear when it would be announced.
At the moment, Radionomy has about 6,000 stations, with an emphasis on a DIY platform which you can use to start up a channel. Shoutcast’s 50,000-strong catalogue of radio stations can be a major boost, while Winamp’s media playing software could be helpful to program those radio stations and offer other services.
Industry observers have also pointed out that one of Radionomy’s strategic investors is MusicMatic, known for developing audio and video for malls and other venues that might mean that the two abovementioned products might get more commercial use.
