I’d begin from the end. Late in the Cop Out, there is a scene in so called “abandoned bar”. We can’t see any customers or bartenders, only Bruce Willis, approaching 2 other guys. The lines are: "He came." – "He had to." I’d like to add: Fortunately, you don't.
The movie was probably supposed to be an homage. It contains lots of synthesizer music and scenes that have already been performed hundreds times before, like any other “buddy cop” film. Although homage is not simple thing, it can only be as good as it is by itself, but not the original it is cribbing from. If I did a stick figure drawing of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, you wouldn't have lined up to take hidden pictures of it. Well, that’s the same with the movie. Cop Out can’t do any better than speeding off the rails and simply crashing into a bad film. The original intent doesn’t matter, the movie is still just bad – unfortunately, I can’t give credit to a filmmaker. who fails to create something interesting and entertaining, just because he did really mean to. I won’t even give credit to someone hitting himself in the head with a hammer, especially if he’s done it on purpose. On the contrary, I‘d plead him not to do that again. And that’s what I do to Cop Out, where Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan are playing detectives not following a book.
There are no opening credits in the movie, and that move gains some extra points. You just find yourself in an instant action with Tracy Morgan doing his job. He’s doing it great, as at least a half of the twenty laughs the whole film contains come from him simply riffing. The plot is relatively not funny, and it seems like without casting Morgan the staff would just have given up on the movie altogether. Bruce Willis and Seann William Scott come off less great.
Actually, there's not much in the movie to talk about. Only directionless plot, cartoonish villain and all scenes bleeding into next ones. Seems like last 20 years of movie making lessons were just disregarded. The film rarely makes you laugh. There's little humor and more decent cursing. Altogether, the whole work looks really joyless, as if Kevin Smith experienced much ton of interference. Nobody knows the reason for failure, the only thing is clear – almost everybody involved in the movie can do much better work. But this combination of potent powers somehow turned into rancid mess.

Agree, it was a stupid movie. But nowadays there isn't many great movies. Thanks Sam.
Only glad I didn't bother to download it. I never cared for Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis is better remembered for his more serious roles!
I love that movie!!! Watched it yesterday.....very funny
Horrible review! I thought this movie was funny as hell! You guys that didn't like this movie obviously take life way too seriously! Compared to most of the crap that they put out these days, this movie was just a lot of great fun and laughs. I don't know how the reviewer can say that "The film rarely makes you laugh. There's little humor and more decent cursing." He must not have much of a sense of humor because I laughed and was greatly entertained by this film!
I disagree I thought the movie was o.k. Not great of course but then again I suppose no one who downloladed this movie went into it thinking it was going to be anything more then o.k., just my opinion, thanks for the article.

The thing which surprises me is that, whereas people who have the capacity to contribute to movie production invariably do (in terms of acting, producing, editing, writing etc), those who do not (never having worked as best boy and/or girl for example) invariably end up criticising those who do as a facade against their own ineptness.
Hard to Believe that KEVIN SMITH made this film! I have not seen it but I always like his films and most other people HATE them. I do wish Kevin Smith would stick to writing his own movies with slapstick, fast talking, well written dialog. Perhaps Mr.Smith is burnt out. His last two films have bombed badly but even Kevin admits that his movies always make very little at the box office put his DVD sales are VERY strong. He has said before that perhaps he should only make straight to DVD movies but people who do that are usually considered hacks. Smith is not a hack but he really does need to get back on his game or he will not be a film maker much longer.
What ever ya smokin I wanna...
This movie sucked; glad I was able to "preview" it via you know what before spending big money in a theater with the other half..
I put this movie in the league with the wily coyote and the road runner- remember the cartoon network; your so stoned anything was okay and funny.
This movie is in that same class.
Looks like Brice was hard up for some cash; come on Brice you can do better than this crap; Heck another Die Hard movie #100 would have been better...
This Movie is funny... not the best movie tho... so i disagree on ur post

I knew it! Thats why I didnt even bother. Bruce is always playing a cop going thru a mid life crisis, or retired cop, or self destructing cop tryna stay off the bottle..but this time he upgraded to a plain ordinary cop w/ an idiot for a partner. That's suppose to b funny? And Tracy Morgan...puh-leeze *yawn*
I very much enjoyed the movie ..... I thought BRUCE willis did a good job and tracy morgan as well and I didnt download it just thinking it was ok I downloaded because i knew i'd love the film.
yeah i agree i can only see bruce willis in serious roles, not this cheesey crap
heheheh alot of yall watch anime and stuff but complain about this movie? (ducking)

I thought it was funny
disagree with #15 - clerks (while hilarious and insane) was a thinking man's movie and dogma/chasing amy flourished on performances and creativity, he used to take things SOMEWHAT seriously - this movie, as well as clerks 2, are complete crap

#19 i did not mean that his other movies were turn off your brains just that this one was and if you have ever seen a commercial or trailer for it you can tell it is that type of movie.when I said he did not take him self seriously as in dogma & Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back it is all very tongue and cheek but we have to remember he only directed this and did not write it so we cant fault him for crappy writing but it was still a decent movie for what it was. :)
movie is gud for me
nowadays u cant expect more from movies (some r exceptional)
tanx for the article
