The Healthy Future of Cinema Snacks

For the majority of us a big part of the entertainment package associated with a visit to the cinema to see the latest blockbuster movie, comes in the form of quick drop by at the refreshment concession stands. Traditionally around the world in an almost standardized and regimented format, a large amount of these vendors will all exhibit the same characteristics, whether they look the same or sell the same products. You all know whatever cinema you visit you will be able to purchase massive buckets of popcorn, hot dogs; plastic cheesy nachos’s and sink size cups of carbonated drinks. Now it is possible that this might all change after a meeting between, the chairman of Sony Pictures, Michael Lynton and a collective of large cinema chain owners at ShoWest, the Motion Picture Industry Convention.

Mr Lynton has put forward suggestions that the traditional movie going snacks which are available to the audiences should be re-examined, and that there is a need for sweeping changes to be made in the type of products that are to be sold, to help combat the rise in obesity that is spreading across our society, especially that of children. This comes on the back of a recent survey carried out by Sony Pictures, in which it was found that 60% of movie audiences declared that they would be likely to buy healthy snacks if they were on sale. Of all the retail outlets that sell food, cinema concession stands are one of the very few areas that you are unable to have the choice of buying healthy food.

Which would you buy?
This or This?
32447586965701178269.jpg35207955668604006071.jpg

In his address to the gathered cinema executives, he canvassed for changes to be made in the variety and kind of snack’s to be made available to the audience’s. He has suggested that as well as changes such as smaller portion sizes, unbuttered and air popped popcorn to the long standing traditional snacks which are available, he was suggesting that it should be possible to purchase a range of healthier snacks such as fruit, yogurt, health snack bars and drinks from these outlets, offering a new healthy range of treats that would give the audience a wider more varied choice of products to purchase, and also benefit the health of the audience greatly. What would you rather see your children eat at the cinema, a mega super large bucket of popcorn or a nice fruit salad? In a way it is also a good marketing ploy to try to entice people like me who have never purchased any form of snack from a cinema to do so, thus increasing the revenue gained by these outlets.

Some health facts about cinema food

Popcorn: Large buttered popcorn can have as many as 1,200 calories and 60 grams of fat (the equivalent of 3 days allowance),nearly equivalent to a having a meal of pizza, garlic bread and a dessert.
Nachos: Large 4oz’s runny plastic cheese could contain approximately 1,101 calories, almost the same as two Quarter Pounders and cheese.
Hotdog: Up to 650 calories and that’s without any toppings!
Soda: A large soda can contain 400 calories and 26 teaspoons of sugar.

menahunie avatarWOW...
SO does that mean everyone is gonna to pay 4.00 for a bananna?
Would you? Not me... I'll take the hotdog with everything on it.
Oh how about that 10.00 fruit salad; want a 5.00 milk with that...
Get the point...
I really really doubt people would want to spend that stupid pricing they have at the "snack Bar" for Healthy Food.
Hey make it available; but price it fair.
As for me?
I'll just keep sneaking my munchies and goodies into the theater; thank god for Longs Stores; right next to the theater. And my army jacket with lots of pockets.
Thin mints anyone :-P

kingtiger01 avatar1. When i think of movies the first thing that comes to mind is one LARGE bucket of popcorn, that was popped in oil with heavy butter and salt. With that Soft-drink to help wash it down while engaged in a movie that keeps me glued to my seat.

The idea of some woman sitting in front of me sounding like a Wildebeest Chomping down on her Croutons that line her salad she got at the concession stand, and the man next to her, Scraping the last of his Yogurt out of his 3-ounce cup, Scraping with a Plastic fork and 30 seconds later getting up once again for the 4'th time in one hour to return to the Concession stand to satisfy there hunger which is natural.

JUST ANNOYS ME TO NO END...

I stopped going to theaters a long time ago, for the most part. Because of high prices and poor Concession stand options.

Since the 1940's are popcorn sizes have been or near what they are today, the only thing that changed in the habits of the population is there lack of Exercise.

For the 3 hours a week they spend in the movie theater, instead of thrusting a tiny portion of crap that they should serve at a Roadside diner in California. Advertise EXERCISING and try to motivate the public to become more active again.

Last time i checked the majority of persons under 18 Dont work in heavy lifting or Strictfully active enviorments and persons under 10 yrs of age rarely work on farms or relative high-paced hard working enviorments which will BURN the calories they are putting in there mouth. Instead of sitting in front of a Gaming Console for 13 hours a day, if there worried MOTIVATE the children to be more active. Take the Children OUT of the classroom, and teach them in Active Enviorments. Teaching them habits that will not only make them healthy but also more Interested in the Curriculum there trying to cram in there brain at a Excessive rate.

No avatarI couldn't say it much better than kingtiger01. The pricing of movies sucks to begin with, but honestly it is the lack of consideration the patrons exhibit that truly turns me off. Between the 5 year olds in a rated R movie to the jackass who has to talk on his cell phone or the others who just don't know what the word etiquette means. When I pay that kind of money to enjoy myself and don't... I quit going.

Aether avatarGood read, thanks for the article. As for this: "1. When i think of movies the first thing that comes to mind is one LARGE bucket of popcorn, that was popped in oil with heavy butter and salt. With that Soft-drink to help wash it down while engaged in a movie that keeps me glued to my seat.

JUST ANNOYS ME TO NO END..." I completely agree. kingtiger01 basically said what I would have said. When I go to a cinema once in a blue moon, for me, to enjoy the movie I'm going to soon watch, I'd splurge for a bag/bucket of Popcorn and a soda. Even though I'm going to pay a ridiculous amount, it just doesn't phaze as much anymore. It comes with seeing the movie, you just expect the high prices nowadays. If I feel like having chocolate or something different and sweet like that, I'll just go to the market, buy a bunch of different candy and stuff like that for the friends and I and sneak them in. But yes, all in all, I really wouldn't buy a Banana or a cup of yogurt when going to the cinema. If they're concerned about kids being obese and whatnot, it's not going to help if you change a Hotdog to a Banana for them to eat -- how I look at it, it's up to the consumer who eats such a thing and only you can blame it on yourself for being obese. It's the same crap with McDonalds and other fastfood chains; the food is in front of you, but it doesn't mean you have to buy it/eat it. You can always choose to eat something else and have a bit of will power to say "No" to foods such as those that are bad to your health. That is what people don't understand, and that is why they are obese.

godchaser avatarFor God sakes.... have we actually become so bloody politically correct that this is being considered? What happens when smokers become a problem for people? What about alcohol and people who enjoy drinking it what happens when they become a problem? You gonna have a fruit and salad bar in a movie Theatre? You gonna serve veggie smoothies to?

What was the line in that classic Billy Joel song? "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints"! AMEN!

KazzGirl avatarI can't afford $12 for a big carton of popcorn - Not when you take five kids with you. I agree with cyberartist - pop into the supermarket and get some jelly babies (we only bought them for the cinema so they were a real treat) bring some water and coridal, and some packets of chips and cookies. Its all fun but the movie is what makes it. At least it should. But there are very few GOOD movies now a days, so we don't go all that often anymore. And if it is just hubby and I to the movies - WE DON'T EAT ANYTHING!!! WE actually don't like the fatty stuff. We might bring a bottle of water, but that's it!
