According to the researchers at Princeton University, the most popular social network in the world, Facebook, has spread like smoke, but now people slowly become immune to its attractions. The predictions are that the platform will be largely abandoned by 2017.
The expectations of Facebook’s impending doom build on comparing the growth curve of epidemics to those of online social networks. The researchers believe that, like bubonic plague, Facebook may also eventually die out.
Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday this week and has survived longer than its many rivals like Myspace and Bebo. However, the Princeton forecast states that the network will lose 80% of its user base within the next several years.
The researchers have based their prediction on the number of times the word “Facebook” was typed into Google search. According to Google Trends charts, Facebook searches peaked a year ago and have since been slowing down. The researchers explained that ideas, just like diseases, have been spreading infectiously between people before dying out one day. This model is successfully described with epidemiological models and can be applied to online social network dynamics. The matter is that ideas are spread between people who share ideas with each other, but once idea manifesters lose interest with it and no longer manifest the idea, they get “immune”.
Four months ago, Facebook reported almost 1.2 billion monthly active users, and the company is due to update investors on its traffic numbers soon. Although desktop traffic to the service is reported to be falling, it can be explained by the fact that people now mostly access the network via their mobile phones.
The researchers used a “SIR” (susceptible, infected, recovered) model of disease for their study. The latter creates equations to map the spread and recovery of epidemics. Different equations against the lifespan of Myspace were tested before being applied to Facebook. The former network was created in 2003 and reached its peak in 2007 with 300 million registered users, but fell out of use by 2011. Acquired by News Corp for $580 million, Myspace soon signed a $900 million deal with Google and was once valued at $12 billion. However, in the end it was sold by News Corp for as little as $35 million.
Well, the 870 million users who access Facebook via their mobile phones can easily explain the drop in Google searches – they don’t have to type the word Facebook into Google to log on, because they have mobile apps now. Still, Facebook has officially admitted that during the previous 3 months they did see a decrease in daily users, especially among younger teens. However, the company’s investors are quite happy with Facebook’s share price, which reached record highs this month, valuing the social network at $142 billion.

I said it before facebook will be the next CB Radio.
Honestly I never got them point of either of them.
i found this so called recherche kind silly all this predictions base on how many time you search FB on Google i mean who does that anyways and beside Google is the most popular Search Engine in the web but not the only one,so i was expecting a more sophisticated way of approaching it.i hope he will die as soon as possible people need to wake up from this social network BS and concentrate about their real lives.
Advance RIP Fb.. lol..

I used to google Facebook. However since Windows 8 got a facebook app I use it. Maybe most people are using apps for Facebook now and not Google.
Nah FB is a weird site, hey guys, I'm breathing in... guess what I can hold my breath for... phew! 45 seconds, and now I'm breathing out... no wait I'm breathing in again, wow will this roll-coaster never end.
It's full of people who don't know each other but pretend they do, if you actually met them you'd run a mile. I bet MySpace are getting the retirement home ready for them, you get a room right next to mine FB
Myspace died because they didn't update their system, it was buggy and frustrating to use. If FaceBook wants to die, they should follow that model.
Young people are losing interest in FaceBook because their parents are starting to use it.
Statistics and predictions like this make me laugh, because they don't take into consider social and functional aspects of the applications in question.
Meanwhile applications for Princeton enrollment drop 60% lol

Can anyone tell me the actual point of Facebook? It is the biggest waste of time and con since the bible. IMO
that is because people might finally realize how stupid it is...
nobody really cares what your status is... (except your jealous girlfriend or boyfriend)
Not sure why people are hating on FB so much, lol. Its just funny to me. The way you people talk its like a game or a drug and people are users. It is nothing more than a social tool to make contacts and it works, it works quite well. I have found people I lost contact with and childhood friends. NO other site can really offer that without a fee or a scam for the information. Yes their are plenty of people who go to far in their distractions but thats just people. There will ALWAYS be lost people. I wonder how many who commented above have a FB profile of some sort? I am willing to say all of the above or either that your just on the outside like a jealous kid afraid to take part. Its like this, you can make things work for you at the levels you want it too or not. There are some things I dont like about FB but I found ways to get around them. What I would like to see is a truly uncensored social page where you could post what ever you wanted and the community decided on the security level they wanted and each persons page was encrypted and only access was by invitation built by the community itself. Now that would be a success. A place where you could bring all the good things from sites like youtube, instructables, instagram, tumblre, even magnet links. everything is set up to communicate through a torrent type client so that everything is in a encrypted cloud. You just pay for the app to join. Just a thought
I used to use facebook until I realized what it was being used for. and tonymengela, why don't you create it you could make millions/billions. Sounds like a good idea, just cut me in since i told you to go for it...
Yes Bernie, it's a good idea that got trashed by FB's need to use itself as a data mining operation. I don't believe their claims of not knowing the gov has a backdoor to all the information collected.

well i,m glad to say i am one of the normal people lol i do NOT have a facebook account and don,t need one i knew it was a pile of xxxx splitting familys etc even the online nonces love fb huh lol
I use facebook and it has a been a great help staying in touch with my "real world" family and friends. However, being a regular - irregular, type of person such as one who frequents these types of sites, I have had to create "alter egos". One for making comments and downloading to ones that I can express myself and abilities, that takes proxies, random file hosting servers and the like to express my artistry with a hex editor, creating algorithms to make sure as many folks that I can reach will benefit from my belief that could and should be free unlimited info for all. It's gets tiring over the years to keep all this secret expressionism apart from what I do in the 'real world". the only thing I see as a replacement for facebook would be a way for everyone to express themselves and remain immune from the ability for yourself or others to hurt one another. Utopian for sure, and I know that doesn't exist, for if it did,we would be searching for another utopia. So, with that said, yes, there will be another "utopian" social media site that will eventually replace facebook, but the powers that be will screw that up too and it will yet again be replaced. That is the ONLY certainty that is....and the fact I will ALWAYS be there to mix it up some more.
Yep I agree, although as soon as big bro gets his fingers in the pie it might take less than 10 yrs next time for people to realize
|Yea, people around me complain this days that they are fed up of facebook, infact what people do most this days is to like fanpages, its like twitter is getting their attention, and with the advent of linkedln.com the serious minded facebookers has decamped grin since what they wanted to do before was have a platform for transacting business and they have seen a better platform for that.||
