FBI Seized All TorMail Mailboxes

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has seized the entire email database of a well-known anonymous webmail service TorMail. This means that all of your secret mails now can be read by the agents. The service was seized while investigating a hosting company accused for sheltering kids porn in 2013. Now the US government claims that it has uncovered lots of emails that can be used in unrelated investigations.

Seized from Freedom Hosting, the email database emerged in court papers in the end of January when prosecutors indicted a Florida individual for trading counterfeit credit cards on the Internet. The FBI executed a search warrant on a Gmail account the alleged counterfeiters used, and discovered that orders for fake cards were sent to a TorMail e-mail account. Then the agents obtained a search warrant for that account and accessed it from the FBI’s own copy of “data and information from the TorMail email server, including the content of TorMail email accounts”.

It means that the FBI collects data into a virtual lock box and leaves it there until it manages to obtain specific authority to tap it later. So far the agency doesn’t search the trove for incriminating evidence before receiving a warrant. However, now the FBI has a copy of the TorMail’s servers and is able to execute endless search warrants.

The problem for TorMail users is that the mail service once claimed that it was absolutely immune to spying. This move gives the FBI the second major victory over so-called anonymous communication. Back in 2013, the agency won a court order demanding secure email provider Lavabit to turn over the master encryption keys for its site. This court decision would have given agents the technical ability to spy on all 400,000 users of the service. Instead of complying, Lavabit preferred to voluntarily close down and is currently appealing the surveillance order.

As for TorMail, this service was known as the webmail provider of the Darknet of anonymous and encrypted sites and services, which makes the cache of the US authorities very valuable.

Newsflash dude....that only worked back in the 80's and among 12 year old kids. Everyone now knows what 4:20 means

julio99 avatarNews flash for all Internet users. There is nothing and no one immune from the spying eyes of the USA. If they want in,hocus pocus, they're in. If not, time for a new law to get us in. Way too many paranoid people in power in los estados unidos. The spots where it counts anyway. It's kind of too bad they don't use their "Trample on the rights" power for the rapists and child molesters. Somehow those idiots seem to get the easiest sentences of everyone. I have yet to figure out how that works and I lived there for 25 years.

tonymengela avatarMost of the LEA that chase down child porn are they themselves pedophiles and are guilty of putting a lot of the child porn back out on the web, They like drugs just want to control the content after its made and then prosecute people to show they are doing something. Not saying its ok just saying the whole system is corrupt

Orka1 avatarTo #3, 5, 6. I worked as a News Monitor a few years ago which entailed noting everything that was written about people who paid for transcripts of what was being said about them on talk-back Radio, TV etc. There was one case that shocked me deeply...the Announcer said he held a large list of A4 sheets filled with HUNDREDS of names. The names were of a group of individuals very well known to the Radio Announcer and would be well known to many listners, but because of a Court Injuction he wasnt permitted to mention not ONE name. Some of the names were Judges, Police Officers, QCs, Lawyers, Doctors ....you get my drift I'm sure. The names were members of a group called "AMBLA." AMBLA stands for "Aeotearoa Man Boy Love Association." I think it doesn't need much more explaination except they were powerful enough to gag the Media.
My take on this is the rich and powerful have been able to buy everything that may appease their appetites but eventually they become bored and need more and more perversions to satisfy them. How to stop this old boys club is beyond me. A sad indictment of the state of our world.

gstanz67 avatarIts kinda funny how so many people are SHOCKED and appalled and even others, a little worried, that this website which boasted about privacy, and the inability to be spied upon...yadda yadda yadda, was so easily taken over once the FBI decided it was time. Well (raps knuckles on side of head)"Hellooooo?" Didn't it ever occur to anybody that its the FBI who creates these sites for exactly this purpose. They have a lot of patience and are very good at what they do. They will set up a legit site and place federal employees there to run that site as if it is legitimately what it claims to be for years if need be. The FBI is all about catching the BIG FISH so wasting their time on catching "Fred" downloading "Star Wars" and random "Porn" illegally is not gonna happen. The easiest way to stay off of their radar is to not be an idiot. Those of you who are not idiots can figure out what that means. For the rest of you....(salutes like Benny Hill) Good Luck

No avatarlike gstanz67 said the agent smiths(Matrix) are everywhere on the big old WWW. To check if something does what it was designed to,you test it to the best of your ability. I tested the so- called VPNs(anonymous internet)with regular porn and a few real money gaming sites, guess what? After a few months the agents, in drab black and white suits and arrogant attitudes logged in to the gaming sites and started insulting me and making porn jokes during gaming sessions(I knew it was them cause I had been on those sites for years and it never happened before, and real hackers have more important things to do). Honestly, VPNs and tor are just ways of leaving bigger digital footprints on the web. They don't care for small miscreants, but apart from going after sickos, they will gladly grab your patents and other intellectual property.

tonymengela avatarThe funny thing is if you are using tormail in the first place you would not put any personal information in that system as you are looking to be anonymous. even your isp would not be listed you would have to be really really ignorant to use that system and then paste your details all over it, just saying

No avatarSKF: Regarding secret languages. Not sure if it's true but I read this in a major Chicago News paper, back when it was news. Jeff Fort, leader of the El Rukin street gang was in Cook County Jail for conspiring to bomb the federal building on behalf of Libya. He was running the gang from behind bars, and under the noses of the Feds, who recorded all of his conversations. Knowing this the clever gang members spoke in code, for example they called guns oranges. The feds broke the code when one member said; "Good you got the oranges. Did you get the bullets?" Honest I read this in the Tribune, but I don't know if I buy it either!

Embolism avatarA good article,it still mystifies me why people use their real names in emails [email protected],tormail was supposedly one of the bastions of safe, encrypted mail but after all the site closures and action by the NSA/CIA/Feds on TOR one would have expected either people to use assumed aliases or some form of encryption from site admins if no one else from perusing their information either by Cipher as #1 pointed out or by encryption.
Hopefully the federales are kept busy for another year or two sorting that out while we await for someone to come up with a legitimate and safe from prying eyes solution elsewhere.
