UK Government to Create ISP White-list

According to numerous reports, the controversial website filtering systems in the UK have wrongfully blocked many legitimate websites. Now the British government is trying to solve the issue by introducing a website white-list system to save innocent domains from blocking in future.

Experts warned at the very beginning that filters of most kinds are blunt tools which lack the finesse to deal with the complex nature of the Internet, but the blocking system was enforced anyway. As a result, during the past few months many innocent websites have been blocked, and this situation could really hit the credibility of what the authorities have been trying to achieve.

Apparently, blocking access to websites of charities and drug advice can cause terribly bad publicity, so the UK government is better to find the way to solve the problem. Now a working group is looking into accidental blocking and suggesting a solution. They are going to make up a kind of master white-list containing websites that have once been wrongly blocked or can be subjected to wrongful blocking. This white-list is then supposed to be passed around ISPs to tweak the filters and avoid blocking of innocent domains. It is known that charities are already involved in the creation of the white-list, so public service websites may be a priority.

The point under discussion now is the creation of a process which would allow the operators of a wrongly-blocked site to contact broadband providers and have their websites added to the list. The representative of the Internet Service Providers Association said they had a feeling that some websites sit in a so-called “gray area” and more needed to be done for them.

Of course, it’s great that the authorities don’t refuse to look into the problem of over-blocking, but the question is why such filtering tools had been enforced in the first place. If some websites remain in a “gray area”, they should be given the benefit of the doubt instead of found guilty until proven innocent. Indeed, if the mechanism fails to tell the difference between a sex education charity and a porn website, then there must be something seriously wrong. In this case, a white-list may be just a Band-Aid.

Embolism avataronce again Orwellian Big Brother thought police tactics to control anything they do not wish you to see and learn from,no privacy,no access and total control of what the masses see and hear,it certainly contributes on many levels in keeping Britain dumbed down and malleable so halfwits like David Cameron can manipulate the masses and cover up his faux pas.
All these methods are in contravention of a free unbiased internet and definitely not what the w.w.w was created for so very shortly I will be war driving my internet through open free wifi access rather than paying to only see what the MAN regards as approved content and sites,We`ve had Mary Whitehouse www.imdb.com/name/nm0925766/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm now we have the NSA/CIA/FBI and David Cameron telling us what, where and when we can watch what we pay our ISP`s for, welcome to Fascist Britain.

Embolism avatar@4 It is not going to be easy to implement and maintain I agree but now that many of the other nations outside the scope of the USA are on board with the NSA`s lead and having their own cyber units for which millions have been laid out financially they will have to show some results.
Between the ISP`s and these Cyber units having the power to seize VPN`s and proxy servers under the assumption they are being used by criminals, pedophiles and Terrorists it will be a simple matter for them to do witch hunts as they attempted to do in 2003/2004 but this time on a more global scale, many will evade capture and slip the net but many thousands will not so the only safe recourse will be to go mobile and use either burners that are unregistered or open public wifi access to prevent tracing.
The latter idea of war driving torrents was the idea behind my recommendations to the Azureus team back in 2003/2004 whereby an ip blocker should be added to the program and torrent search facility, decentralized torrenting should be implemented etc all of which have been taken onboard and added to the program now known as vuze looking towards the day when we were forced to go mobile and not static rats in a trap.

npsl013 avatarMate but look at the whole picture. Piracy isn't going to stop, TOR isn't going to stop. And the Govs realize that. If they'd want to stop and catch all of them pirates, more than 1mil people would get charges. They will focus mainly on, like you said, pedos and terros. And I support that. Also, a good point to make, is that We, Pirates, help the Gov in some cases of stopping a Pedo on the deep webs. We have about 50% chance to be left alone.

One more thing. The agencies have been doing spying and sh*t for as long as the Internet lives. And we won't change it. By using Torrents for example, we take the risk, of being caught. The only safe way out, not to get caught, is to stop torrenting. And this is not going to happen as well.

Cheers!

Embolism avatar@6 you are right to a degree, whilst mass actions has been condemned by at least 1 judge in the USA the rest of Europe still have that as a concern. We are already just being here now showing that we cannot be blocked, but it does not mean you are safe since you are only as safe as your VPN/Proxy is and the powers the Americans and EU countries now wield in seizing suspected servers means as in 2003/2004 before the hunt for pedo`s bull servers can and will get taken down and their clients along with them to a greater or lesser degree.
As you have stated there are rather a large number to deal with well over 20 million users worldwide and the NSA is already stretched to collate all the information already gathered which is why ISP`s are logging their clients as well and server siezures will continue.www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/04/may-firstriseup-server-seizure-fbi-overreaches-yet-again it is not just ok to say maybe we won`t get caught and put your odds at 50/50 since many would prefer better odds and so what are the options.1 Using self contained secure comms on the move and war driving torrents since VPN`s and proxy servers will be and are already targeted,2;Change the way in which torrents are posted via a secure msg board over I2P,TOR,IRC which has been done in the past none of which is really infallible due to latency, etc or 3:pretend we are not likely to be hit aas the odds are in our favour and hope that only doing 1 or 2 torrent will not get us years behind the door, complacency is why 1 in 10 Americans are behind bars now and the likes of Mr Sprague and many of the sites have since perished.www.afterdawn.com/news/article.cfm/2005/03/02/oscar_screener_pirate_found_dead_in_jail_cell
with people getting more and more ludicrous sentences for Internet piracy and it being still a grey area to many in legal terms with no fixed sentencing and outlandish cost claims by copyrighters we can never become complacent as to what our fates will ultimately be and should in todays world of free and open wifi access make use of all the opportunities for anonymity we can ,while we can.It will never stop as Russia,China,Australia,Asia,USA,UK,EU proves but why be a boxed up static node waiting to be excised by the internet surgeon for the benefit of the corporate clones. : )

Embolism avatarIt is ludicrous to me that the NSA have propagated such outlandish claims amongst its partner countries that doing all of this Cyber policing will stop anyone's efforts to remain anonymous either with email or any other form of transport should they wish not to be tracked, monitored etc,but many people do not keep their finger on the pulse so here is a useful link for them dee.su/liberte a secure and portable comms aid, ones own personal condom.

sn3h1t87 avatarOh goody, now they have lists of places you can and can't visit. Soon the internet will be divided into sites that are approved by the government and sites that don't exist.
