Gérémi Adam appears to be the 1st Canadian who has been sent to prison for camcording, but he may consider himself lucky to avoid much stricter anti-piracy law that has been recently enacted. That way he could have been put behind the bars for up to 5 years. His nickname (maVen) is known to many members of peer-to-peer networks, and you probably have heard of him too. 28-year-old guy has compiled an outstanding body of work, producing lots of the highest quality CAMrips in the area.
Last week Gérémi Adam was sentenced to 9 weeks in jail and was also obliged to a hundred hours of community service. And, of course, he couldn’t end up without being forbidden for 2 years from coming into any movie theater around.
This case is the first one of such kind under Canadian Copyright Act, however, since that time much stricter penalties have been implemented. The new legislation, Bill C-59, now demands 2 years of prison for the crime of recording a film illegally, without permission, and 5 years behind the bars for taping a movie for intended rental or sale.
Particularly, it says that “recording a movie shown in a theater just for personal use is liable to imprisonment for maximum 2 years, and recording it for commercial purposes is liable to imprisonment for maximum 5 years.”
maVen, actually, has his infamous court history – he had already been found guilty twice under the same Copyright Act – both times in 2006 for distributing illegal copies of the Hollywood movies “How to Eat Fried Worms” and “Invincible” in the web from his maVen account. Later, in 2008, he was taken red-handed again while he was cam cording the “Street Kings” movie at some different movie theater. He was accused a 3rd time, now under the revised Criminal Code.
Richard Brouillard, Gérémi Adam’s attorney, told the court that Adam had quite a difficult past and also mentioned many times at the trial that he didn’t make any profit from his illegal distribution of copyrighted content, as his only purpose for getting into pirate activity was to become an online celebrity.
Canadian investigators were satisfied with the sentence, as they knew that the films were coming online from Montreal and FBI worked hard to catch Adam. They now assume it as a strong message for everyone willing to try to do the same as Adam did – and the message literally reads “You will have to face the consequences, dude. I mean, you could go to prison.”

These "jail sentences" are ridiculous...there's something wrong with this world when murderer's,rapist's etc walk out of court free men on technicalitie's and a guy recording a movie gets thrown in the slammer....strange.

Damn another time!? he really doesnt learn...
No real big deal, look at his track-record. The *Scene* has been doing it for years, this is just a minor technicality versus the big world. I wouldn't even bat youre eyes at it twice. As far as yourself personally, Read the post a few months ago about staying safe.
Maven is a legend...
Maven is a Legend? Yeah 5 years ago, this day and age most Cam's come from EU and Nearby. Take a close look and thats Obvious.
And Speaking from Experience, if you cannot do it right, DON'T do it at all.
if you Can fit a 1 megapixel pinhole camera, with a Mmos Flash storage device, Wireless miniature microphones, Miniature H.A.M unit and Video Glasses with VGA input.
into a hat, and not lose the structure or make it obvious you dont have problems like this.
Worse off, if youre going to the same theater over and over, you WILL get caught. whether you know it or not the monitor EVERYONE, and that 12% that stands out gets noticed and remembered, and if they return. Then continue the same act, its a obvious as cookies on youre face after stealing from the cookie jar!
yea that defintely does suck, but you have to figure as time goes by technolgy for recording movies would be easier due to smaller cameras, more memroy better recording quailty etc. etc.......makes me think of the post i read up here the other day about the new cisco servers comeing out.....speeds capable of sending EVERY movie from usa to india in like 2 minutes or something ridculsy fast....as i see it the law makers are fighting a loseing war.....they will never be able to keep up with technology and the millons of P2P users round the world....here in the USA ive never had problems dling movies or from my ISP or those emails from anti p2p groups saying they have ur IP timestamped DLing infringments etc etc.....run a good program like Peerblock or surfshield for safety......good post put up sometime back being safe on here .

Ive downloaded some maven stuff and unless they were renamed, I found the quality to be absolute crap. The jail times that they want are ridiculous, people get less time for far more serious crimes. What about the corporate big wigs, enron, and all the ponzi scammers that have ripped people off for their entire life savings. These scum ruin the lives of how many people, why doesnt the government and the mpaa use their resources to go after them with the same zeal
Rahim Jaffer pleads guilty to careless driving. Former Conservative MP fined $500; cocaine possession charge dropped. The initial drug charge was embarrassing for Mr. Jaffer who had approved campaign ads supporting drug-free schools and getting tough with dealers. He was initially charged with driving while having more than 80 milligrams in one hundred millilitres of blood, speeding and possession of cocaine.
This is sickening. Anyone else woulda been thrown in jail. This is Canadian Justice at is finest. FREE MAVEN NOW!!!!

Ya well, look at Gordon Campbell premier of British Columbia, got an impaired driving charge while in Hawaii (on the tax payers, of course). He made a media appearance saying how sorry he was and that he didnt measure his drink. He wanted us to believe that he was slighly over the limit. While as it turned out, when the cop pulled him over, he actually fell out the jeep that he was driving. He wasnt just over the limit, he was something like 5x the legal limit. The stupid retarded British Columbian people, instead of firing him, voted him in for another term. So esentially he got a reward for being a drunk crook. It made me sick to see him at the winter olympic games. If the world only knew what he is really like. So just a quick recap Gordon Campbell gets a reward for being a drunk piss tank of a crook and Maven gets jail.
i agree with the last 4 comments, The legal system IS F* up anymore. The legal system is so focused on Small infractions and anyone with enough money to aviod any Infractions.
Its just Sickening, they wonder why 'Pirates' Existed in the past. Why there Was smuggling of real-life goods...
Makes me wanna puke just thinking about all the Crap that goes on Daily...
