Twitter blocked links to Kickass.to, the 2nd largest torrent index online. Users trying to access the website via Twitter receive a warning that the website may be unsafe and potentially harmful. In the meantime, Twitter provided no comments about the reason for this unusual blockade.
KickassTorrents accounts for millions of unique daily visitors, which makes it one of the most used BitTorrent trackers, trailing only behind The Pirate Bay. Kickass indexes millions of torrents, which can then be shared via various social media, including Twitter. For instance, writer Alex Sayf Cummings published a link to a torrent of his own book “Music Piracy And The Remaking Of American Copyright” in a tweet recently. He was obviously inviting people to get a free copy of the book from the website, but Twitter wasn’t making it easy. People who click on the link to Kickass faced an ominous warning: “The site you were trying to visit may be unsafe! This link has been flagged as potentially harmful”. In addition, the social network points out that users can proceed to the website at their own risk, but not everyone will do so.
The first question is why Twitter decided KickassTorrents is a dangerous website. The company claims to use Google’s safe browsing diagnostic instrument, but it is known that the Kickass.to domain isn’t blocked there. Moreover, KickassTorrent’s old domain Kat.ph gets the same blocking treatment. It seems that Twitter has for some reason decided that this particular torrent tracker is a forbidden zone for its users. Twitter’s help section says that even if Google’s diagnostic report of the link is clean, it may decide to continue blocking it as potentially harmful.
Some experts believe that the blockade has something to do with the fact that KickassTorrent links to copyright infringing files. Facebook also used to restrict access to The Pirate Bay for the same reason. However, the company reversed that decision after a few months.
Thus far, KickassTorrents is the only large torrent tracker blocked by the microblogging platform, but it may be just the start.

@RUkiddin I hear you. The pop ups have gotten crazy. This site does it to just not as bad. Just now I went to logon to leave this comment. The second I typed my user name in I got the your flash is out of date popup. Seems like a lot off other sites I go to are doing this more frequently. Goto skidrowgames.net they give popups likes you have never seen the likes of.
Since the link posted by writer Alex Sayf Cummings was to his own work there is a case to be answered by Twitter since neither the link is for copyrighted materials nor is the transport illegal since Bit torrent is a transport used by many servers like sourceforge.net and others legally around the world.
Now whilst they did not actually stop people going to the site, but put up a warning to deter people from doing so the author could claim interference in the distribution of his works to the detriment of his personal profile as a writer and claim that future sales of the book in non electronic form could be damaged by such interference.
If in America such would be worthy of a law suit since to interfere in the legal distribution of proprietary works is in itself detrimental to the furtherment of the Authors career and future works even if said work is at present free through bit torrent, such a block also lessens the credibility and veracity of the writer who posted the torrent link,so if you are reading or following this post mr cummings do as they would be done by in the USA and sue the backside off Twitter for damages.
@5&6, have you heard of Firefox and AdBlock? Aparently not. There are no pop-ups on kickass or ET when using that. Matter of fact, no pop-ups at all from any site. So stop complaining and get your browser into the 21st century.

By blocking the author's chosen & legal means of disseminating his work, Twitter is guilty of violating his right of free speech. I think the civil rights violation could really boost the take should he choose to file a lawsuit against Twitter.
AdBlock and NoScript are really indispensable tools for surfing the 'Net. Using them allows one to choose to see ads only on sites they wish to support and to block them on sites that abuse their users with pop-ups & pop-unders and excessive Flash & Java scripts that can slow your surfing to a crawl. Don't leave your homepage without 'em!
