Today everyone understands that the digital age has changed the way people shop, bank and play. But it seems that a rising number of consumers complain that they are stuck with slow broadband and can’t leave costly contracts.
At the moment, a home broadband service in the United Kingdom costs about £35 per month, and subscribers are normally tied into 1-year contracts. However, the latest research from the local communications regulator Ofcom revealed that the typical speed varies dramatically around the country. It averages 26Mbps in urban areas, 18Mbps in suburban areas and 10Mbps in the countryside. In the meantime, lots of subscribers from rural and hard-to-reach locations are stuck on speeds of less than 2Mbps.
It is understandable that people who are paying such money for their broadband and still getting patchy service are so angry. The research also showed that since April 2013 there’s been a 27% increase in the number of people seeking help about broadband issues. First of all, people from rural areas find unreliable Internet a particular struggle.
British government is going to ensure superfast broadband, promising speeds of 30Mbps and above to reach 95% of homes and businesses in the country by 2017. It already extended its deadline by 2 years, but some areas still have little chance of being upgraded to the new fiber optic technology in the short term. The experts explain that installation is expensive and takes a long time. Broadband providers are upgrading areas which are already well-connected first before starting working with more isolated regions.
There are lots of complaints from rural citizens facing problems with their broadband providers, and Ofcom’s latest report named Orange/EE as the most complained about provider last summer. Indeed, the company has received double the average number of complaints from users. BT was on the second place, again showing a significant rise over the previous quarter.
30% of people calling their Internet provider are doing so to complain, and connection speeds remain the biggest problem for customers. Among other frequent complaints there are troubles with customer service and switching packages. Part of the problem is that most broadband connections are still delivered via the “grindingly slow” old copper telephone network, which is decades old and subject to numerous shortcomings. The worst part is when your house is a long distance from the local exchange, as in this case the strength of your connection weakens, resulting in a slow broadband speed.

|Maybe instead of making everyone pay the same price regardless of Bandwidth, they should adjust the price on what kind of speed you get.|
|dont matter what speed you get,start downloading a torrent and things slow down.its not always the isp either,too many people on one torrent,some site's want money too speed things up ,lots of other reasons so why pay for top speed your never gonna get it|

|@eddy, that's how my service is. There's different tiers of broadband available from Starter (6 Mbps) on up to Extreme (105 Mbps).|

|@edddy, almost all isp's offer a tiered service now days. Starting a 2mbps upwards. Plus they all now offer a speed check prior to choosing the package you wish to subscribe to. Compared to most of Europe we dont come out to bad. Last I heard we were about 10th in the league tables, with 60% of houses having access to next generation broadband. Far better than countries like France and Germany. But a long way behind Belgium and Holland which manage almost 95%. Both of whom do not suffer the difficult rural land scape faced here. Not saying its perfect by any means,but it could be a lot worse. Plus we beat America hands down for a change. Costs out there are almost double those in London. With some states charging upwards of £70pm.|

|i was with virgin they were charging me nearly 100 a month for broadband etc what a blatant rip off branson i hope gets killed slowly where as with bt i now get a better deal for 45.00 a month inc telephone etc and as repeated above richard branson can go die after ruining ntl lol|

get you gov to triple what it thinks its going to cost and then give all that money straight to Google and have them do all the setting up of the infrastructure for you .....

|@Mr_T_Cat, actually our internet providers are offering a tiered service and the prices are pretty competitive, thanks to new providers offering services. Companies here are greedy though. Just wait until you guys are wired up with good broadband speed. The providers will nickle and dime you (or is it 5p and 10p?)to death. I was stationed in England. Loved it there!!|
|I live in a fairly rural town, the houses across the road from me have fiber but not my side of the road as our council determined that BT Open reach needs to concentrate on the business area's first....|
If you guys aren't sure as to what area's are getting fiber first, check on your local councils website as centeral government gave the contract to fiber the UK to BT Openreach and then gave each council control on how and when it gets installed and exchanges get upgraded. And to be fair this is a huge undertaking for each BT Openreach office, who are generally fairly bloody useless at the best of times. This huge fiber project should have been split between various other companies not just BT Openreach, another F'up by government. We've had so many community meetings about this with the council and BT Openreach my head hurts.
