UK Event: Rally to Protest “Three-Strikes”

UK consumers have a great opportunity to express opposition to the government for their plans to filter websites, cut Internet users off the Internet, and ban open Wi-Fi. This opportunity is provided by the reputable digital advocacy group named Open Rights Group, based in UK. They organize a rally today (Wed 24th), intending to show the government what people really think of the Digital Economy Bill.

The target of the whole event is to obtain open honest debate, as the law has already been proposed to amend and now posing a threat of filtering websites and banning open Wi-Fi, let alone a “three-strikes” regime, forcing ISPs to disconnect alleged file-sharers from the Internet. The slogan is “We want a debate.”

The matter is that the government doesn’t have enough time to debate the Bill, because now it is occupied by planning the budget, and the election is scheduled next. No Bill can be discussed after the election because of the government structure changes. So the Bill has the only option to be passed with fast or no debate at all, thus resulting in its passing in not satisfactory shape.

The opposition claims Internet to be the same vital service as water, gas or electricity, which can’t be revoked so easily. Even the telephone can’t be detracted without a good reason. So the whole household can’t be deprived of the benefits provided by the Internet only because of accusation of a single individual – that is just not fair.

Last week the Open Rights Group declared that around ten thousand letters were sent to the government in just three days with the call for having a debate on the Digital Economy Bill. Meanwhile, corporate lobbyists are sure the Bill won’t be debated or changed and it will pass as it is. That means they are literally asking the Members of Parliament to pass the Bill without delay, which is just outrageous for them, as the Bill causes so much controversy. It doesn’t even seem democratic at all – to carry this Bill on without debate.

Moreover, the British people do elect the Parliament and entrust it to write the laws, but they never elected copyright owners or other corporations pressing on the Bill passing, and they won’t allow them to interfere into the decision-making process. If you are among those who agree with that, you’d better be at the rally at the moment.

kingtiger01 avatarThe internet as a whole IS a Vital Service. Its replaced Paper Medium as a primary Media Source, Its replaced the Telephone for the most part AS a primary Communication Resource. And its VAST Content makes it the ONLY open-selection of different Media, Arts and Music.

The internet IS the reason for free and open thinking, it has brought the ideas and ideology of foreign and local thinkers. That would of otherwise NEVER had the chance to speak there mind. Most importantly, its allowed people to gather to one place, that otherwise they never would have. From all over the world, to speak there mind FREELY without the Boundaries of language, Liberties or Government.

The idea of the internet as it is today is not to pull a Vail of Copyrights, Government Regulation and Views. Let alone Government 'Propaganda'. No, the Idea is to Be open and free, To be Free of the Boundaries of Humanity's Oppression, and be open to the ideas and views of the world.

THE INTERNET SEPARATES US FROM A CHINA LIKE REGIME!
(Note: I am from the USA, but... The Internet speaks as a whole for everyone. Whether you're skin, Language, Health, or Religion is different. Were all the same at the soul and 'It' allows us to come to one place to Congregate together.

Like ET, we all don't just come here for the Torrents. Look at chat, look at the news. If that were the case there be no response to a report like this. This isn't the Biased opinion of one person. WE The rest of the people are Able to Speak are minds as Well.)

Dare_Bear23 avatarWell said kingtiger01 couldnt have said it better myself, it is my belief that the powers that be DO NOT want us as a whole to have free speech, they simply want to have TOTAL control. This will probably sound like non-sense to some people, but i think others will agree with this statement. Very good read SaM, this site is an absolute must for the Articles and Torrents alike in my opinion.

cyberartist avatarThis is bullshit isnt it. It is an attack on free speech and free thought. The aussie government is currently trying to get the ok from our senate to get its own internet filter (in cahoots with the ISPs) up and running. I thought we were the only western democracy that was crazy enough to impose this crap. I hope that its NOT the shape of things to come. Thanks SaM.

kingtiger01 avatar@Dare_Bear23: and the moment it gets too far, they will have a Total Utilitarian Uprising.

They forget WE run these Country's. whose going to protect them when there own military and Police force wont Do there Bidding?

Mercenarys? whats 100 merc's against a country like the UK or USA's intire Trained Military Force?

When that day comes i can promise you i will holed up some place with every network released to the public for open use, every Gov. building sitting with no Utilities and watch the rejoicing.
