The RNS (music pre-release file-sharing website “Rabid Neurosis”) member Matthew Chow was acquitted in lawsuit concerning conspiracy in committing copyright infringement of criminal level.
In September 2009 the government accused some 6 members of the “Rabid Neurosis”, music file-sharing group, of copyright infringement on criminal level. Two people of those six have just fount not guilty of the charges.
28-year-old Matthew Chow was the latest for the last Friday to be acquitted of conspiracy in committing copyright infringement. This charge carries such penalties as $250,000 fine and a maximum jail sentence of 5 years. The possibility to be forced to pay reimbursement to the Record Industry Association of America was present too.
Matthew Chow said after the ruling had been announced that he is relieved by the verdict of jury and feels very grateful to his attorney for doing such a hard work for him. Terry W. Yates, the Houston attorney, representing Chow in the court, told that they had met several really complex legal and factual issues during that trial. However, they were lucky that the jury was attentive enough during the hearing, so their ruling was just, as it should be.
The case was that federal US authorities claimed “Rabid Neurosis” was the most prospering music piracy ring worldwide. So according to that federal accusation, Matthew Chow with 4 other “Rabid Neurosis” members colluded from 1999 to 2007 to upload several thousands of pre-release music albums online illegally. The content was initially provided to them by music industry insiders. The rest of the indicted members have already pled guilty to copyright infringement previously, with 3 of them suggesting testifying against Yates for the government as the part of their plea.
