Rapidshare used to be a serene port for those who wanted to distribute copyrighted material or download it without fear of consequences. However, over the last weeks, the company seems to have been taking an aggressive approach to users downloading or uploading copyrighted content by logging their IPs for legal purposes and instantly terminating accounts.
Alongside with other file- hosting services like BitTorrent, in the recent years Rapidshare has been successfully increasing its user base. The site ranks among the 50 most visited websites worldwide, having millions of guests each month. Again alongside with other file-sharing services, it hosts a great variety of movies and music material uploaded to the website without the permission of the copyright owners. This has already caused several lawsuits brought up by copyright owners – for example, the last verdict to Rapidshare was to filter several hundreds of book titles in order to avoid such penalties as huge fines and jail time.
It has never been a secret that most people use Rapidshare as one of the best ways to distribute copyrighted files, having been remained untouched. That all lasted until recently, when some users started to complain about their accounts being terminated for copyright infringement. It really looks like the service decided to concentrate on users sharing copyrighted content, and at least Rapidshare doesn’t deny it.
Undoubtedly, the reason for such termination policy is an increasing pressure coming from copyright owners, and may easily lead to decision of many users to move over to some other file-sharing services. A spokesperson for Rapidshare has confirmed the process of terminating accounts of those users who proved to distribute illegal content. As far as you remember from the service policy, they have the right to block accounts of users not respecting their terms and condition.
There’s also some information appearing about scan emails being sent, but yet nobody can verify it. Nevertheless, even without verification it’s not difficult to understand that something has definitely changed inside Rapidshare, and this will result in something, too. The only visible sign of outcome is terminating users’ accounts. We’ll see what’s going to follow.

Like moviewizman says, one dies, 50 more pop up. it's a losing battle, maybe they should just join and work with one of the biggest fastest growing trends since the internet began. without admitting it everyone is joining in, from television manufacturers right down to the most powerful industry of all time, of any time, porn. rs sucks anyways, they knew until they got caught, shame on you rs.
Yepp, and there Goes there user base, Rapidshare will fold up in less than a year, for lack of Funding.

thanq so much SAM
Well they just shot themselves in the foot. They most likely use a word filter to catch "popular" words and maybe look at the band with usage; download whats there and find out its copyrighted and terminate... NOT they don't have enough people in their company to do that.
Here we go again; logging IP for "Legal" action ( by Who? ); when can you convict someone just by using an IP address?
Even their name 'RAPID SHARE" is for what??? LMFAO....
Share what? Family picture and family movies???
MiniNova deja vu...
General internet speeds for everyone has increased tremendously over the past few years. I can send a movie to someone all by myself in about 15 minutes and there are much FASTER services in my area but I am not gonna pay any extra money when the speed I have now is almost ridiculous. I say ridiculous because I rarely get a chance to top out my top speed even when hooked up directly to a Microsoft server. Rapid share accounts are not worth it anymore because, as you can tell here at ET, even public BT sites can offer stupendous download speeds!
I would actually like to try some of the older technology in P2P use and see how they run under todays conditions. With all this speed offered today more highly encrypted clients or programs can be developed that mask everyone IP's and maintain a high rate of download speed. That is a big stumbling block with secure programs of the past. I have not read much about them in a long time because I got comfortable with my sources...but things will always need to keep evolving or "they" will win. "They" can suck "it"!
wonder if my comment will get deleted again, but megaupload.com is basically just like it, but you can do multi downloads, still have a 60 second wait, but it friggin works t('.'t) Rapidshare :/
