You should know that Microsoft has finally given up on its most successful product and announced that it won’t support Windows XP any more. In other words, millions of computers all over the world are now at risk from security threats, but the software giant failed to persuade people to switch to another operating system. According to the latest statistics, almost 25% of the world’s machines still run XP.

rip-xp.jpg

Of course, it has been a pretty long run. Windows XP was released in the mid-2001 and its development was started in the late 1990s. Its prototype code was codenamed “Neptune” and built on the Windows NT kernel, intended for consumers. In the meantime, an updated version of Windows 2000 was also initially planned for the business market. In the early 2000, both of these projects were shelved in favor of a single operating system nickenamed “Whistler”, which could be used in both business and consumer environments.

The new OS introduced a considerably redesigned graphical user interface and became the first version of Windows which used product activation in an effort to reduce software piracy. Despite this feature, XP was pirated to oblivion, so you can see how that worked out.

Windows XP proved to be extremely popular among users: by January 2006, more than 400 million copies were in use. XP remained the most widely used OS until August 2012, when Windows 7 overtook it.

The much-extended deadline fell on the same day as Patch Tuesday, giving Microsoft a chance to release updates for the platform. But after the April, 8 no more updates for machines without custom support are released. The exceptions are the UK government, which has paid Microsoft £5.5 million to keep public sector entities covered, and the Dutch government. For everyone else it will be a great time to target machines running on Windows XP, because there is no protection short of virus checkers anymore.

Mr_T_Cat avatar@3 I think you are being a bit harsh there. What other products can you name that get constant updates and revisions for over 13 years for free. The operative term is capitalists. That is how the world works. All companies have to run at a profit other wise no company. No company means no jobs and down the slippery slope you go. And just to be clear they are not forcing you to upgrade. If you dont wont to dont. the Choice is yours. Or of course you have done the smart thing and bought a Mac.

netzzz avatarThis minimally impacts individual users, obviously the real issue is the security of government and business computers running a vulnerable OS.
Aside from the potential financial losses, they actually pay for those OS licenses, which I doubt could be said for many torrent users.

magengar avatarI'm using Win7 Ultimate in my laptop which is online; and Xp-sp3 in my offline desktop. I haven't had any problems with them.
I'm not gonna complain about Micros#1t giving up on XP, because for as long as I've been using computers (since 2001) I never once "invested" in any of the MS OSes I've used to this day. lol
I never use a new OS on its first release; I just wait until the reviews and service packs are in; and then I'll go ahead and use whichever OS version is truly Reliable, Stable, Well-reputed,
and works Best.

No avatarAlways go with the odd numbers with Microsoft 98, XP and 7 were very good for your typical user, so fingers crossed for 9! (NT and 2000 were great OS but not aimed at home user's so not included)

Do think Microsoft have missed out here by not offering updates on older OS's as a substitution service, say 10 years after release.

No avatar@13: Yeah, sure, everyone should go out and spend 3 to 4 times what the hardware's worth to get a Mac. Once they switched from PowerPC to Intel x86 they lost all justification for existence. Buy your parts, assemble your system, and install a Linux or BSD OS and spend $450-$550 for what Apple charges over $2,000 for. Add a $200 valid Windows license and you're still below 50% of the Mac cost and have a system you can actually get useful software for. Mac lovers are just bad Apples.....

ShaneLee79 avatar@ #7 Redbull99: haha thats awesome..you must be the one here with the oldest still working OS from all the posters here then! I think Win 98 was ok...but 95 was better...but hey...try to find modern day software or a recent game and try to get it to run on Win98...I doubt that any of the modern games would even run on it! I used to run XP even long after Win.7 came out...but then (although hesitant) I upgraded to 7Pro because XP would not run my prefered games anymore! And I am very happy with Win7! I am however completely ignoring Win8 and 8.1 and will wait til Win.9 comes out and then maybe..just maybe give that a try IF the first reviews are good!

No avatarStill use it on 3 machines, vista on another and 7 on another. Certainly not going to pay the over the top prices to upgrade, and then the hardware probably not up to it. You upgrade hardware, then find you need to upgrade a load of programs. Far too expensive, stick with what I have until it packs in.

TheCuz avatarWindows 7 Pro 64 Bit ROCKS ... It's XP Pro on Steroids ... Win 8 is ok for touch and things handheld but not for laptops or Towers anyways there planning to dump 8 soon BUT go 7 Home or if you can scrape up just a few more bucks TOTALLY GO Windows 7 PRO ... Mates I tell ye true that 7 Pro well it's the best and can be made to look like XP Pro as well and run software in XP Mode ....... Windows 7 Ultra is 7 Pro with mega business tools added to it and only needed strictly if you own a business or company so if you do not own one (Business or Company) you don't need it and will save at least a 100 bucks or more!!! :o)

bm777 avatarAll this bullshit about upgrading to windows 8/8.1....What a load of crap! If MS haven't got it right in 11+yrs of WinXP, then my friends, there's no frigging hope. If you have a decent anti-virus, there is no need to upgrade at all. If you're like me and many others, steer away from microsoft and install either linux or MacOs...

If NASA opted for Unix as its O.S. for the Mars missions..then I ask you...what the [email protected] are you doing with windows..can't even open them
