A copyright discussion blog carried out a research to find out what most of us already know – that closing down any BitTorrent tracker website doesn’t have any sense because its former users most likely choose an illegal alternative rather than turn to legal stuff.
It was more than four months ago now that one the most visited BitTorrent tracker websites – MiniNova – had to delete all torrents linking to copyrighted content under the ruling of a Dutch court. Otherwise it would have faced penalties of €1000 for each link, which could result in total to €5,000,000.
Firstly, MiniNova tried to fight copyright infringers by implementing filtering systems, but then had to give up this idea as it turned out to be impossible to bring in a hundred percent working system. And so it finally went legit.
Everyone clearly understands that MiniNova former users just switched to any other alternative BitTorrent tracker website, as there are like thousands of them to choose from. However, the blog Future of Copyright has carried out a study, in which they monitored MiniNova traffic prior to and after its going legit in order to reveal how much did it changed and where the rest of it switched.
The exact day MiniNova deleted all infringing torrent searches – November 26th, 2009, the traffic fell from 8 million to 2 million a day, and downloaded torrents dropped from 10 million to 0,5 million a day. Now let’s trace where it went. As research says, after a month the number of visitors to the most popular BitTorrent trackers increased by 3.75% as compared to the month before MiniNova’s links removal. The most popular members, BTJunkie and The Pirate Bay each experienced a 45% traffic increase (this even made The Pirate Bay the most popular ever, with twice as many users as its rival Torrentz). The next two in popularity, Torrentz and IsoHunt each noticed 29% increase.
The report also notes that the loss of MiniNova has had a dramatic effect on the community of BitTorrent users, because they lost a reliable user-friendly tracker having no fake content. So the case forced the users to spend time in order to at least find needed stuff, and lots of time – in order to find the real (not fake) content that doesn’t contain malware.
In one word – we didn’t learn anything new, but it would be quite interesting to know where MiniNova traffic really switched. Well, probably the report will make somebody to ponder the private tracker websites’ importance.

A great read - as always SaM - and thanks. Closing us down here and there is just a minor inconvenience and really only helps to strengthen our resolve. Those who try to prosecute sites - should be made aware of facts and figures such as these.

I may not always find what Im looking for and may use others from time to time(.764%) but like so many things in life There's No Place Like Home! Thanks SaM and everyone else that give ET that something Extra. I only wish I found this site first.|
lmfao @ JJ's comment ... ET the place to be !!
I myself started out at mininova. Ironically someone left ET as a place to visit and at the time demonoid was down. I've never looked back. Thanks for the reading and all who make ET the great place to be. I'm here to stay.
ET is INFINITE times better than mininova
because et staff and members are really awesome

Mininova had such a GIANT database it was really terrible that all that was lost. Well not lost but no longer available in one place. ISO Hunt is still a great search engine but I like ET the most. The format is so professional looking and the uploading teams are fantastic! ET is the best site ever IMO!
everything happens for a reason now i understand wht it means tht if it wasn't for mininova to disappear we wouldn't know tht there's a better site than both of them combined mininova-piratebay it's ET all the way baby!!! ^_

Et is the only place to be...
As a former member @ mininova, i was sad to see it go. But honestly, it doesn't matter in the end. ET has Always been my one true home, In all Honesty. I would have prefered for no Torrent Site to ever see the Wrath of MPAA/RIAA but that's just not possible...
it will Probably take a long time, before the MPAA and RIAA are caught up in there own BS and arrested. Thus stopping this Stupid and Wasteful hunt.
Any way you want to look at it, The consumer will lose out in the end. I rely on torrents for movies, i own or have owned every torrent(except new releases and low-budget films) i download, the ones i don't i make a great effort when i have the funds to purchase/see them in a manner that pays the system back.
This may not be how everyone does things, but reality is. We Advertise, We Rent and WE the Torrent Community are keeping Movie-Theatres alive. in a Time were Content is offered all over the place at a much lower cost than offered by the MPAA/RIAA's primary aim. The movie Theatres.
Point in all of this...
LEAVE BIT-TORRENT COMMUNITY'S ALONE, YOU CAN KILL A SITE, BUT YOU WILL NEVER KILL ARE RESOLVE.

i to miss mininova a lot but extratorrent is great except that porn gifs
me too switched to ET from mininova..and now i am happy with ET.....thankz ET
me too demonoid is where i go now. there and ahashare. they have such a great selection, and so many friendly people. this used to be my go to site, but not any more. i come here sometimes, not as much as i used too. my main problem is the selection is very limited, and the people (some staff included) with bad attitudes. such as comment number four. that was just uncalled for. clearly they were trying to improve this site. mininova was after all the biggest site on the net. must have been doing something right. i also saw the same guy putting some one down in chat when they asked what an R5 was. there are tons of nice people on this site, but there are too many guys/girls that just dont get it as well.

MiniNova was a kick ass site for torrents I never had problems, no illegal download notices or anything. Life was good and I do still miss the Napster days for free music but with the right software any music service can be circumvented we have not lost a battle we are still here :).

Well said kingtiger01, i personally download quite a bit but if i have been looking forward to a movie, i got to the cinema and i pay to watch it because, lets be honest nothing beats the big screen for the experience. I also buy DVD's all the time i probably do half and half to be honest, meaning half downloaded movies and half i pay for, i have a vast genuine DVD collection i mean hell, i have thousands of pounds of genuine DVD's. A very good example is AVATAR, i went to the cinema twice to see that and have every intention of buying it genuine when its released. Like so many others have stated, long live ET the place to be!!
________ nice article sam......, infact i'am one of new users in this what we called p2p world., i'm greetful that after mininova i found this site.........., thnx mate and LONG LIVE ET.

I never used mininova, however I am a former isohunt fan. Then found you guys and et changed everything for me. Verified uploads, quality, and a great and welcoming community. Still have my demonid account for back up, but et rocks and has the best stuff. Thanks for the article sam love a good read.....
As an old Mininova user and fan I was gutted, and sad when it closed, but have to say, I havn`t ever had a bad d/l from ET, which cant be said about any other site i`ve used.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK & THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!
I`m also an ex-Mininova user. That site was great, it had almost everything i want(ed). ET doesn`t have everything that i want, but the best about ET is that i get good and reliable files. Sometimes at Mininova you didn`t get what you was DL, or the files were corrupt. I`m glad i came to ET and i will be here for a long time! THX for the great work and keep on going like this!

Well to be honest about this article... DUUUHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Where else are they gonna go.. Of course they are gonna go to other sites.. Just cuz mini fell doesn't mean the torrent world ends.. When I read the headline for this article I was just like "Wow.. do they really have nothing else to type about cuz that is the most obvious headline I've ever read ever.." Mininova users go to other sites...
Everyone stop what you're doing and read that out loud and then think about how dumb that sounds... ROFLMFAO
STEP YOUR GAME UP ET

I found ET after the Mininova incident... best site right now, the "checked by..." feature is what I like most, never had a single file that was actually different from what it said in the torrent description! Thanx a lot ET and thanx to all who take the time to check the content and give their "sign of approval"!

I too started on mininova. It was a sad and ultimately annoying day when it shut down. Mininova was great for beginners in the torrent world. Whether people got put down for asking questions or not, they at least got answered and there was some decent quality. As for the ever infamous demonoid and other such private sites, it's next to impossible to get invites to join these sites so it of course forced us nova users to go elsewhere. So far, I have to admit ET has been a nice alternative. Thanks all. Remember to seed when you finish downloading people!
posted by (2010-03-29 15:37:48)
yes, long live the warriors of ET and of course, seed :)
i want to know how much % user inc did et see after mininova closed down ?
posted by (2010-03-30 00:33:01)
I think they have 13 torrents now listed. What's the point of keeping the site up?
posted by (2010-03-30 02:06:13)
yeah i used to use mini quite a bit, and with demonoid down at the time and piratebay being a lagfest, i got turned onto this site by a buddy of mine, and now this is my #1 torrent bookmark.

I started uploading to mininova..then after they went down I started uploading to demonoid, and I happened to stumble onto this site (which rocks...keep up the good work ET Staff) The chat was friendly and the Staff were helpful and for that reason I am going to keep uploading here. ET...The Place To Be.
