Blu-Ray Becomes Less and Less Popular

Once regarded as the savior of the entertainment industry, Blu-Ray is now being pushed out of the market by video-on-demand and downloads. Sony, for example, has officially warned of heavy losses primarily connected with its exit from the PC business. Another reason for the decline is the fact that demand for physical media is contracting faster than the company expected.
bluray-icon.png

One of the recent reports showed that revenue from DVD and Blu-ray sales would likely decrease by 38% over the next 4 years. Meanwhile, online movie revenue will grow 260% from $3.5 billion in 2014 to $12.7 billion in 2018.

The researchers believe that people are now used to the instant availability of online media, and the idea of purchasing a physical is weird for people under 25. Finally, it was pointed out that the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) video compression standard might finally kill off Blu-Ray, as the former doubles the amount of data available for streaming in HD format. For instance, the standard allows to stream 8K Ultra-High Definition content with resolutions up to 8192x4320.

It should be noted that Blu-Ray never did as well as DVD. The latter dominated the home entertainment world 10 years ago with almost $22 billion in sales representing an overwhelming 96% of home entertainment spendings. Today DVDs still have respectable sales figures, with many people believing that DVD is good enough. In addition, optical media might survive as a way to back-up personal data, as it can prove more reliable than cloud storage.

Blu-Ray was officially introduced 8 years ago, backed by Sony and other tech giants, but the format had a slow take up, and its success was largely determined by its integration with Sony’s PlayStation 3. Back in 2013, around 124 million of Blu-Ray discs were sold in the United States, which is a 4.2% increase over 2012. But even taking this increase in consideration, the reduced pricing for the format negatively influenced the revenue, which only increased 2.6%. As for DVD sales, they have been plummeting for many years now, and dropped 13.6% in 2013.

fusseltier avatari still prefer the old dvds and never wasted any money on a blueray player.
your eyes aren't that good to need something extra perfect, just like your ears aren't that good to need the super best audio.
especially now that manufacturers use the made up term pmpo, which means nothing.

trialNerror avatarWith the disc I can watch it again and again and again and again and again and again.
I can take it with me on the road and watch it again.
I can't do that with a streaming service.
With streaming I get to watch the video once and if I want to watch it again in a month or two I have to pay again. Uh. No thanks.

presto12345 avatarBad news for the concert world. Of course we want a physical copy when it comes to concerts. It's something you watch many times over and the video and audio quality is like being in the front row.

tonymengela avatarWell its like this, my car has slot for USB, my TV usb also, To me disks were obsolete few years ago. I honestly cannot understand why we are still using crappy disks that require moving parts, no scratches, and so much power to operate! Seriously, I have a little usb chip that can hold up 64 gigs of information! If you ask me, disks are useless with today's technology. I ask myself why these game machines are using these disks when you could downsize them by removing the disk player section all together and put games on even SD size cards, then not only could the SD card hold the game but also Read/Write all the game saves and everything on the card itself and save the main HDD for media instead of games and saves. Think of the power consumption save, far less heat generated by the game system. It just does not make any sense anymore

crazymichael avatarMaybe when they lower the prices people will buy them.Every time i see them advertised there always £3-£5 more than DVD version. If I've payed for the BR player why am i over paying for the discs. It might be better quality but it's still the same film. The only time i watch BR now is when i get it from extratorrent.

No avatar@tonymengela Yea so true. I had 3 old Sony 10 disk cd changers for the car. I threw them all away. With usb on the car stereo who needs it. I have so many disks with scratches. I had to re download alot of them. I think usb flash drive is what killed blurays.

No avatarI really don't like the whole streaming movies idea. I have a feeling that when we stop having hard data like dvds and blue rays and everything is streamed. The ISP and movie companies will say what you can and cant watch in your own home. lets not forget that they will also charge you for that convenience of being your personal censor.

Oh no wait the NSA is already trying to do that.

No avatarI can put many bluray quality movies on a usb hdd and watch them anywhere and everywhere...besides any kind of technology eventually dies out remember laser discs those big LP size discs then the cassette player took over that next was dvd and so forth in 5-10 years they will probably have something 10x clearer than HD quality is now!

No avatarSome Bluray disks have exceptional quality and are a delight to watch. Unfortunately though , they are still very expensive in Australia. I can buy a Bluray online from the UK at more than half the cost of a standard Australian retail outlet and the movie has still not been released in this far away place....

fullspeed avatarThe thing with why dvds are still popular is because it was a bigger jump in technology coming from analog vhs. Bluray couldn't do the same mainly because people can't seem to notice a difference in picture or sound quality when watching on hdtvs under 63 inch especially when the image is upscaled.I for one prefer blurays over dvds because it is better in every way for me and and on my 4 metre wide cinemascope screen hell i notice every single extra detail of the bluray over the dvd upscale. When I used to watch blurays on smaller hdtv I too didn't notice a significant difference between dvd and bluray. Thanks
