The company recently came under pressure over a massive hacker attack, with 3 US states launching their own investigations of eBay’s security practices: Connecticut, Florida and Illinois. The states confirmed they were conducting a joint investigation of the breach. In the meantime, New York Attorney General demanded eBay provide free credit monitoring for every user suffered.
However, there are no details about what happened, because the company has only provided scanty information about the attack. The latter is currently under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a cyber-forensics firm. However, the quick move of three states to investigate the attack demonstrates that authorities are quite serious about holding e-companies responsible for securing users’ data.
The very next day after the breach was revealed, eBay shares saw decline of 1.3% in Nasdaq trade, compared with a 0.6% increase in the Nasdaq Composite Index. The investigation launched by Connecticut, Florida and Illinois will focus on eBay’s efforts to secure personal details, the circumstances that led to the breach, the number of users affected and the eBay’s response to the breach.
Although eBay declined to comment on the investigation by the 3 states or Attorney General’s request for credit monitoring, the company confirmed that it was working with governments around the world in the wake of the attack. The FBI also admitted that multiple agents were working on the issue, but the agency declined to comment on the likelihood or timing of arrests.
The investigations were launched after the eBay users complained online that they knew about the security breach from media sources rather than directly from eBay. Some of them admitted they still hadn’t received warnings by email, which eBay had promised to do.
According to security specialists, the best practices in responding to a massive hacker attack would be for eBay to have a message pop up when affected users log in, telling them about the situation and suggesting to change their passwords. However, a few days after the attack was revealed, eBay failed to have any information on the issue visible on its home page when accessed from the United States.

|It's just me or there have been a surge of very high profile hacks that affect million of users since December?. CNN just did mention that in less than 6 months, half the population in the US has had their banking information (110 million customers) exposed in those hacks.|
|@3 probably no coincidence and it is funny how now all eBay accounts are to be trolled through with credit checks by the Feds.|
1st metadata and then open access to peoples bank accounts and credit history one has to consider 2 things was it a red flag hack for the feds benefit or was it really anonymous or another groups antics either way you know the Govt will be taking the opportunity not to secure the servers for ebay a week later, but data-mining for their wants given such a golden opportunity to get information previously kept private.
