A brilliant computer hacker responsible for infiltration of the servers of huge multinational corporations had to defect to the authorities in order to avoid a long and boring jail sentence. The LulzSec leader, Hector Xavier Monsegur, was arrested by the police and threatened with over 20 years of jail sentence under the American government’s justice system.
But the hacker decided to switch sides and help the government disrupt hundreds of hacker attacks on such targets as Congress, NASA and others. The court papers submitted by New York prosecutors detailed the cooperation of the hacker for the first time, when they asked a judge to reward Monsegur with leniency at his sentencing.
The hacker helped the police cripple Anonymous and was working around the clock together with FBI agents. Monsegur provided information about then-ongoing computer attacks and vulnerabilities in sensitive computer systems, for example. According to the estimations of the police, he helped detect more than 300 separate hacks, which prevented millions of dollars in losses.
However, despite saving the United States and its authorities more than 300 times, the hacker will still face prison sentence. But thanks to his cooperation, it could be just two years or less, not twenty as was suggested in the beginning. Three years ago, in an interview with an online magazine, the hacker said he decided to join forces with Anonymous hacking collective because he was upset over the arrest of Julian Assange. Under his alias Sabu, the hacker led LulzSec group. The latter managed to hack computer systems of such giants as Fox television, Nintendo, PayPal and other businesses, along with stealing private data and bragging about all of it on the Internet.
When arrested, the leader of the collective immediately agreed to cooperate, providing the Federal Bureau of Investigation a tutorial on the inner-workings and participants of both hacking groups. Of course, the other hackers didn’t approve him switching sides. The reports saying that Monsegur started to cooperate made him a pariah in the Anonymous movement – the other hackers started publishing personal information about Monsegur, and once he was even approached on the street and threatened. In result, the hacker and his family were placed in a witness protection program.

|Tis always the way the Man turns them or corrupts them with threats or money I cannot believe there was no incentive there as he is well known for his exploits and so not grassing his confederates to make amends for his misdeeds or to Brag, 2 years instead of twenty maybe but his confederates may face a combined total of 100`s or 1000`s of years potentially because of him, hope he can wrestle with his conscience over this and sleep at night, although given the facts I would`nt turn my back on anyone on the prison yard.|
|What baffles me about these "Brilliant" hackers is how easily they are caught. I thought hackers were supposed to be able to hide their location/ trail and what's the point of hacking then bragging about it to the world. Kinda doesn't make sense to me. Whats the point of being called Anonymous if you go around shooting your mouth off, defeats the objective somewhat doesn't it. Boasting really doesn't seem worth 2 years in prison. As far as I can see, if you're in it to brag you really shouldn't be doing it, Anonymous can do without the egotist's.|
He put a lot of people in jeopardy including his own family, that is a very foolish thing to do, maybe the two years in prison will help him start to think of what his actions will do to others and the price they will pay for his foolishness.
|His usefulness at an end after 300+ blocks or captures of his fellows he goes into witness protection and spends his life as John doe working at the local car plant in Wyoming !!|

|Big correction required...Lulsec Boss?? what a joke. He was not the boss, nor was he the coordinator, he was just a member who stabbed all the rest in the back.||
