One of the founders of the largest BitTorrent trackers in the world has been arrested in Sweden and is expected to serve a sentence for copyright violations. Peter Sunde has been on the run for the last two years. The TPB founder had been wanted by Interpol since 2012 after being sentenced to prison and fined for copyright infringement.

According to the representatives of the Swedish National Police Board, Peter Sunde was given 8 months in jail and he has to serve this short sentence. The Pirate Bay founder was arrested a few days ago in the southern Sweden, but no details were provided thus far.

The four co-founders of the service known by any file-sharer in the world were originally sentenced to 12 months in prison each and fined $4.8 million in total. Then an appeals court reduced the prison sentences by varying amounts for each defendant, but raised the fine to $6.9 million. One of the defendants wasn’t present at the hearing. Two years ago, Cambodia arrested and deported another TPB co-founder at Sweden’s request.

Peter Sunde may have been living in Germany during the last months and Swedish Supreme Court had rejected an appeal from him. The Pirate Bay is currently the largest and the most popular BitTorrent tracker in the world. The service was launched more than 10 years ago to provide links to music and movie files stored on other users’ machines. The Pirate Bay is still functioning, despite countless efforts of the entertainment industry to shut it down. According to The Pirate Bay website, the service is now run by a different organization and is registered in the Seychelles.

mrFloppy avatarThat's extremely stupid and illiterate act by Swedish police. What's wrong if my brother form another region want to share his file with me? Is it a crime? so release the guy and let him practice what he love freely without boundaries.

wchouser3 avatarThat just goes to show you; money is the only thing people truly care about. I've always hoped the entertainment industry would evolve into the understanding that file-sharing actually helps the industry. My best wishes go out to him. He should have came here. I could have hid him forever.

bigboy12 avatar@ top8 you are so right, wonder where priorities are? One can do a real crime such as
murder , rape etc. & get little or no punishment.Strange how the law works isn't it.

PenguinPirate avatarI'm wondering how they got this to stick, they don't actually share files the sites users do. So how did the site founders violate copyright? Unless they could prove that they themselves were sharing copyright stuff this should have been thrown out of court, the things people do for money....

nurvx avatar@ jumbo71

The war on drugs DID work. The point was never to stop drugs. The point was to fill all the privately run jails and prison and halfway houses. These facilities bill the States about $130 a day per inmate. Think of t as a forced occupancy hotel system The US leads the world in the incarceration of it's people.

Yes yes...of course it's about the money. The recording industry wants money, The movie industry.....us. We lie and say we'd pay for music and movies and software if they put out a quality product at a fair price ....but we wouldn't if we could get it for free. File sharing is about money too its about us keeping ours to ourselves. It hasn't always been what it is today. Now it's about consumers consuming without paying. Which of course raises prices and degrades quality of the products available. We're all part of the problem. Just a fact.

They can't arrest us all so they're going after the "Facilitators". Those who have developed tools and technologies that allow file sharers to do what they do. They're trying to cut the head off of a snake when they're actually dealing with a Hydra. Typical heads of state and law makers trying to solve a problem while thinking with the same old paradigm.

Best wishes to you Mr. Sunde. Thank you for your contributions and sacrifice. They have not gone unnoticed.

skulljockey avatarPirate Bay was the first torrent site I used way back when. Why is PB being singled out of all the bittorent site available. OMG pay approx. 15 bucks for Amazon Prime and you can get many different newer movies you could ever want to see.

sn3h1t87 avatarWhat exactly is the purpose of this? To be a statement to the world? The only statement is for them to f. off, as if they think people will stop pirating because they arrested one guy, instead, we'll be more determined than ever to ensure piracy continues long into the future.
