Microsoft Puts Pressure on American Government over Surveillance

It’s been a year since the first Snowden revelations about the NSA surveillance, and the software giant has finally unleashed its nastiest lobbying hounds into Washington to request for reform. Media reports say that Microsoft is demanding that the US search warrants should end at the country’s borders.

Microsoft faces problem overseas, because foreign countries, especially China, don’t like the US government’s surveillance methods through US companies. Microsoft claimed that the government should better address important unfinished business in order to reduce the technology trust deficit it has built. The software giant is concerned about the US government’s efforts to use search warrants to try and force the companies to disclose the contents of communications of overseas customers which are stored abroad.

Edward Snowden revealed that the government intercepted information in transit across the worldwide web and hacked links between company data centers. This move could literally kill off the chance of the United States to make any impact in the lucrative Cloud trade.

In the meantime, Microsoft is not the only company which threatens to cut off the country’s politicians political funding. Other tech giants, including Cisco Systems, are also jolly cross. Cisco penned a stiffly worded letter to Barack Obama last month, asking for his intervention so that the technology business of the United States wasn’t hit by a loss of trust from customers all over the world thanks to reports of NSA surveillance.

This letter was written after the publication of reports on how the National Security Agency physically intercepted network equipment and planted surveillance tools before repackaging the devices with a factory seal. These devices were then sent to international customers.

So far 8 tech giants, including Microsoft, Google, Facebook and Yahoo, have asked for a reform of government surveillance legislation and practices all over the world. The corporations are sitting on shedloads of lobby dollars which the politicians definitely need.

American politicians don’t really seem to understand the risk they are facing. Last month, they watered down the USA Freedom Act – this basically meant the spooks can continue to do what they like. While Microsoft pointed out that it never received an order related to mass collection of online information, the company believes the USA Freedom Act should be strengthened in order to prohibit more clearly similar orders in the future.

No avatarI think most of you idiots in other country's that hate on Americans, have no clue what they are hating on besides the American Government. In this day and time, the people of the USA have no say so what the Government does. They brainwash the weak and lock up anyone who disagrees with them. Giving police military gear and passing the authority to fire on their own civilians. Most are right about the bullying, buts its not the people doing it simply because we could care less whats going over there or any other country.

The surveillance needs to stop I agree, especially in other countries; what they do is none of our business.

You got this out-look on the USA, how about you come and live here, deal with the police and government pressure. Not knowing if the government will come take your property you've worked your whole life for because of Eminent Domain; which is bullshit.
Be controlled and policed constantly without disregard of our rights, money taking away from you because they think you made to much as they borrow money from other countries.

Get the facts straight before you put judgement on 300 million people who hate they're own government for their actions.

Sammy1968 avatarI just love all you American haters. You don't hate Americans, just the government. How stupid to think 99% of the Americans population is just like the Government. I rather live her than anywhere else. Look at England. Still has a a freaking queen who doesn't have a clue of what is going on in the world. She's just a figure head. At least we don't have that stupidity. Not to mention the British Security Industry Authority (BSIA) estimated there are up to 5.9 million closed-circuit television cameras in the country..WHAAA BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU! So many cameras in such a small country. Bottom line, don't put down the USA. Next time a ship is in trouble, a tsunami hits or other disasters somewhere around the globe and needs help...who's almost always there? The Brits..nope. The US Navy. Get real. This goes for all other countries as well. If you afraid you info will be looked at, then don't be stupid and send evidence across the internet. Simple as that.

No avatarHey guys I live in New Zealand and even our government is run by idiots and people who care only about the dollar. Its not the average Americans fault its all the political "MIS" leaders that are in charge and also what can any one do?. They have a a political system based on bribery just like here in my country. I love the American people, their government not so much.

eNdEmiOn avatarIt's really not just the usa doing this sort of poop. Look at the power pyramid.
images.elephantjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/GlobalPyramid1.jpg

As you can see government is at the bottom. Blaming it all on that layer doesn't get you anywhere. The real leaders/bearers of responsibility aren't even visible to us. Like cows don't know who decides where they go, as the cowboy is also only following orders/instructions from higher up.

Sammy1968 avatarLet me add that I don't hate all governments or their people. All governments spy on others all the time. And all governments are not for the people but their own SURVIVAL. It's that simple. I hope I didn't piss off any of you with my first comment, but I defended the USA while in the Army, and I love it.

PenguinPirate avatarI find it hard to believe that Micro Soft are doing anymore than putting up a cover story to make them look like they care about privacy, its not like they don't hand over any info on their users as soon as asked. They literally do anything to help the NSA and any other 3 letter gov agencies that ask for certain info, its not like they hide it either you can see videos on youtube where people from microsoft say "yes we have our OS' backdoored but no the NSA or whoever doesn't use it to get your info, they ask us for it and we get it for them"

No avatarThe government is accepted by the majority of the American people, therefore they can share the blame for every bomb dropped, every country they RAPED, and every spying device built and used by the USA, all 300mil of you. If you don't agree with the actions your government is taking outside your country, you better stop them, because they're American actions, not "American government" actions.

Also Sammy, who has America needed to defend itself against? The American military has more war criminals on the payroll then the Nazi party did at the hight of its power.

Stop feeling sorry for yourselves, and don't expect any sympathy from us folks "overseas".

No avatarWhere the heck was everyone when Bush passed the Patriot Act 2? It made it legal to spy on everyone but yet passed over 10 years ago. Why is everyone so surprised when Snowden came forward? Its been legal for Gov to write there own warrants to spy on us since 2003.

No avatarExar_Kun, yet again another blind idiot to the cause. I don't want your sympathy, nor do i want you to feel sorry for me. The people have no say so what the government does; example with Obama here recently negotiating with terrorists. Do you really think we the people wanted our government to trade 5 well known terrorist for one deserter?

Regardless if its the US or any other country, spying will never stop. Only when the truth is told and secrets are no longer kept from the people will this cycle of invasion end.
