For those whom do not know this, it is completely legal to share files via the bit torrent protocol. So many of us are ill informed about our rights as patrons of the file sharing world. With all the propaganda, and lies put out by anti-piracy, most assume that the would be world of torrents is against the law. This is simply untrue, and file sharing is allowed in any form, although the fight against it has heated up immensely.
Rewind a few decades, to the pasy. Once upon this time, there was a guy with his neat new cassette player, who had purchased many new release albums (both A & B side for his player. The AM radio he had in his garage, was bent up, battered, and received major static interference. This man, decided he would take the cassettes to a friends house, where they both listened endlessly. This friend, decided he liked the music, and bought his own copy. He then also took it to a friends home, and that friend followed in his footsteps, and purchased it as well. Are we seeing a cycle here?
This is how file sharing has always been, a very resourceful promotional tool (free advertising) for the major multi-billion dollar industries, in this case, the record industry. Someone somewhere, was able to hear content, that without their friends or family "sharing" with them, they would never have had the opportunity to enjoy the material to begin with. Thus, dubbing, copying, duplicating, all began.
The advancements in the modern world of technology, have also played a key role in this. The same companies (Sony Entertainment) who have a stranglehold on the industries of television, music, movies, etc. decided they would create newer pieces of equipment. Thus, the world of cd burners and dvd burners appeared. Even further to the future and we have bluray re-writable drives. Amazing as well, that these same companies, also invest and distribute the media that is used to record these "duplicates" or "copies" of the entertainment, which they (The Industry) also sell as a pre-made product. This began the oxymoron of the war on file sharing.
How can a company, whether it be it's main role of business, or it's investors, or it's affiliates; make the decision sell something capable of freely copying what it makes a profit selling? Of course, money is how. Money is the essence of the battle. They have no problem selling you the hard media to "copy" materials, but they do have a problem when you actually do decide to copy their products. Oh the irony.
The days of cassette wars and false propaganda from anti-piracy, are far from over. The difference is now, we live in 2009. We are in the prime of a technological revolution, and new advancements appear each day. The knowledge of creating and identifying, has spread from a handful of insiders to a few million worldwide. The information that lies in the matrix known as the internet, is forever endless.
It seems, whether you have a PC, a Mac, a tape player, a mp3 device, a dvd player, a vhs player, a dvr, even a cell phone, or any other machine capable of playing "copied" goods, then you are sought after to remove the capability for you to do so. The war-loving factions of the industry, have created and sold you these devices, and now, intend to strip you of the right to use them to their fullest capability. This is an outrage.
During the more recent years, as we all know, p2p has led into a new realm, the world of torrents. This world, has easily allowed millions upon millions of users, to distribute their files, whether it be videos, books, music, art, or any other form of digital media. For some in the world, whom cannot access these same resources, the online cesspool of torrents, is the only way they can get their hands onto some of the materials they require. Whether those materials are for personal research, sharing, or recreational use, they are all thankful for the torrent community. As are millions of file sharers worldwide.
We go back to the current times, where the now industrial giants of the west, are leading a worldwide war against torrent-ism. The war on Torrent-ism. They make those of use, just simply trying to hear a new song (that can be bought for pennies legally on some sites), into vicious pirates of the internet, scheming to destroy the corporate capitalistic ideals they have set into place. My reply to the anti-piracy's call to end file sharing is simple, "No Sir".
We will not fret, nor shall we fail, as we cross bridges and build paths toward an evolution of technology, and an evolution of the industry itself. It is time they stop spending the hundreds of millions of dollars to fight file sharing, and invest it into distribution of legal media, across the internet, with ease.
Think of the millionaire whom has no legs... Each day he battles to pull himself up, and struggle to get around. He has plenty of funds, yet he does not have the ability to go out and purchase the new hot movie that is in theaters. The industry can consider him a "lost" customer. If in fact they would distribute the media digitally, he would in fact gladly pay, yet they choose not to, and he is forced into the world of bit torrent sites. Is this man a criminal? That is not for me to decide, but the industry, can consider themselves as criminals for not deciding to share their content with this man, and many others like him who do not have that ability freely go out and enjoy life's pleasures as some of us can. Not because of financial reasons, but because of personal reasons.
How many others like you feel the same? Maybe you have kids, or a family that always needs you there, and you cannot manage to get everyone carpooling together to see the latest release in the theaters, although you can easily afford it. Another "lost" customer for the industry, in fact, a handful of "lost" customers, by choosing not to distribute the media digitally for them to enjoy and purchase.
There are millions upon millions who I believe, would gladly pay to purchase their own digital media copies, "legally". These souls would be more than glad to take advantage of the technology that lay before them, so why does the industry choose not to do so? Well we can discuss that endlessly, but in my opinion, yes technology has went leaps and bounds in such short periods of time, but the industry, does not do this for one reason. Money. Money they have invested into affiliates such as, theaters, dvd retailers, promotional banquets, trade between nations of hard made goods, and they know that when these companies they have invested into turn a profit, so do they. This is the reason, and you cannot change the ways of a river, it continues to flow in the same direction, without a phenomenon occurring.
The phenomenon, is occurring though, as more and more desperate fanatics, turn to bit torrent, and it's overly expandable resources. So many become dedicated to bit torrent for their media, that eventually, it becomes the only and easiest way to do get what they need. The Industry fails here, what I call, "an epidemic of failure", because of the massive market they are missing out on. Why they continue to choose to do this, is a question that they still do not answer, instead, using their finances, to pressure many world governments, to strip away the access of the internet to "accused" file sharers, and to remove the bandwidth supply from the sites that "index" these torrents. That is not democracy, nor monarchy, nor dictatorship, nor socialism, that my friends, is oppression.
Oppression, censorship, and terrorism declared upon the internet, by those very few, who do not understand the means or methods of file sharing, the same billionaire few, who would have you grovelling at their feet in order to receive bread for your dinner tables. This tyranny and removal of our rights, by this industry led coalition of money hungry nations, must be stood up against. David stood up against Goliath, and in doing so he was successful, although odds were against him. I ask you my friends, will you stand up to the media behemoth known as the industry?
Hopefully you see their intentions, are merely to censor the internet, to continue to profit (which they do in great amounts), and to attempt to control the governments and nations of the people of Earth. This vagrant stripping of freedoms, is ultimately, a war against the people of this planet. A war by them, to lead on their imperialistic goals of one world government, forced rules and regulations, to control the world. Some say to enslave us all, but I believe, the new world order is in effect here, you allow them to slowly tear away at your rights, until, one day, there is nothing left. Will you obey? Or will you decide your own destiny. Many of us choose freedom, freedom of oppression, freedom of speech, and freedom from the censorship of the internet.

very well put will open some eyes :))
Powerful words, however I disagree that people would pay for their own digital copies. Its already been tested in the music industry were we can purchase music legally online for next to nothing. I dont believe over %10 would start paying. They are simply going to have deal with the fact that WE ARE HERE AND GOING NOWHERE! Put us all in jail or let us do our thing. Very resourceful article, and I think What we are doing is a very resourceful marketing tool.
Althought I respect your opinion, iTunes has proven that they WILL pay for their own digital copies, to a company which prohibits all of bit torrent as being licensed for it's products, whether it be the iPhone or iPod. Also, they have not only gained mass profits for the "industry" from their song download pricing, but, they have forced others into jailbreaking, cracking, or hacking their devices just to use the software they want to use. Further example of how Apple is one of many companies wishing to strip the people of their rights and freedoms, for a product the people have paid for! Fight The Power :)

Yes Taker like Robin Hood steal from the rich give back to the poor ppl who cant afford cinema trips with 10 kids, ppl who cant afford hot new dvd's etc with economic climate the way it is more turn to the cheaper option. They were classed as outlaws but still gave something back...
agree with taker and dougie, HELL i remember copying spectrum games and commodore games, nobody said nothing!! :))
Yip, in some countries now their councils are demanding that public places now apply (yes you read that right --NOW APPLY--) for music licenses to play music in their property, so for the past 30 years or so these places have been playing music for FREE with no money going back to the artist.
Everybody is being hit by the ppl of Anti-Piracy, now personally if I had created a piece of work which ppl lent, hired, copied, reproduced, then let them!! BUT NO Money should be exchanged and no editing to be done, i would just be happy my work is being distributed for free knowing that honest ppls are enjoying it.
maybe im talking crapido but we all have opinions, let us here more.
place to be! :D
