Sony Music took an unprecedented action last Friday, by blocking videos of Beyoncé on her YouTube channel, accusing it of copyright infringement. Beyoncé, like many other artists and bands, has had her page on the world’s most popular video-sharing site. Her page is still online, but the fans, logging on to her page and willing to watch her well-known “Single Ladies,” now meet only a message from Sony about blocking the video in the fan’s country because of copyright infringement. The funniest thing is that message is placed on Beyoncé’s YouTube channel right next to the banner, probably, from her record company, congratulating her for winning the Grammy Awards.
However, Sony blocked only her performing videos, while her footage of a commercial for Dereon is still available for watching. The rest of her videos can be still found on the VEVO YouTube channel – the website which is co-owned by Universal Music Studio and Sony Studio. It presents something like a mixed bag on the singer’s official site, where you are still able to watch the video for her “Video Phone” and “Sweet Dreams” songs (the latter is only available in a live version, though). But the video for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It),” the winner song of the Grammy and MTV 2009 can be found absolutely nowhere in her official channel.
This Beyoncé’s channel blocking came at the same time as the well-known and lively discussed ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) broke the surface. It has been negotiating by many countries of the EU, USA, Canada, Japan and Australia for 2 years already, and is intended to allow legal bodies to shut down websites of those who are alleged of illegal file-sharing. ACTA, if approved, would also make Internet Service Providers responsible for illegal actions of their users.
Of course, it is a common thing that many performers are quite strict in investigating the illegal use of their copyrighted material, including video. However, Sony’s action was the first case when a label decided to shut down its own star, despite there’s been some discrepancy between record companies and YouTube on copyright content in recent years.

I to always have a read at the articles. I see it like this, no matter what these record companies do, it won`t make the slightest difference in their revenue, people buy music if they want to and you will always be able infringe as I have been doin since the birth of the audio cassette many, many moons ago. When I was a young lad, every Sunday I would record the UK Top 40 on my stack system. I haven`t bought a CD since the late 80s but I do buy DVD`s. Long live ET.
Wonder if its due to youtube content being downloadable via other means. Maybe they were just trying to make a bigger case out of it? Just doesn't make any sence to me totally pointless for them to do this :) Thanks Sam!

I hate the Sony Music and Universal... They always block videos at YouTube
Nice read SaM,thanks.
just goes to show that the artist is now only a tool of the music industry, and that they are not individuals with right's over their own material but are wholly owned by the recording companies in every way possible.
lmfao.. i dont like beyonce anyway, alicia keyes is so much sexier !!!
she aint all that...she is a wana be tina turner. and as for youtube....they just aint the same any more.
This just proves what allot of people have been saying. The RIAA IS NOT FOR THE "ARTISTS" but ONLY FOR them selves and how they can exploit these "artists"..
By what Sony did on THE ARTISTS OWN FACEBOOK PAGE NO LESS.
This isn't some one else showing Beyonces videos and then getting clammed for copyright infringement; but record company screwing its own "artist" Beyonce stating we will dictate when, where, and how Beyonce will show HER PERFORMANCES.
If she was very smart and she is; she should be talking to her lawyers about her contract with sony...
Better yet Hire her own production crew and go direct to you and I and Say Screw SONY....

Beyonce's videos were removed because her ass was only meant for widescreen
The next thing you know you will have internet police banging on the door screaming shut that video off before we kick the door in and take your Beyonce watching A$$ to jail. Thanks for the article.
