Take a few well known actresses, of which one was an Oscar nominee (Uma Thurman, Mini Driver and Jodie Foster), a budget of approximately $5 million and a story about a mother getting ready for the sixth birthday of one of her children, whilst trying to juggle family life without the help of her ever busy husband. The movie starts off in the morning, and winds its way throughout the day where Eliza Welsh (Uma Thurman), faces all sorts of problems and challenges to overcome and face up to, thus ensuring her daughter’s party is a success.
Putting this altogether and it sound like you might have a reasonable entertaining movie, which could possibly be a top 10 box office hit. Well that’s what the producers, directors and cast thought.
Unfortunately that’s not the same opinion that the movie going public concluded when “Motherhood” was released at the beginning of this month in the UK. On the opening weekend it grossed and astonishing $132 (£88)( equivalent to 13 viewers), with the takings for the first Sunday of its release being only $13 (£9), meaning it only had one viewer for the whole day! This comes on the back of similarity poor taking’s from the movies US release when it managed to make $60,000 (£39,800), and so far has grossed only $701,784 (£465,552) worldwide. This comes on the back of many poor reviews for the movie.
“Yet the tone isn’t jovial so much as smug and condescending, with everyone from Thurman’s whiny matriarch to her distant husband (Edwards) turning into ugly caricatures. It’s a judgmental tale whose only payoff is carpe diem drivel”—Nick Schager (Time Out New York) and,
Lou Lumenick from the New York Post slated the movie with these words: "If Carrie Bradshaw ever trades her Manolos for sneakers and starts blogging about raising children, I pray she wouldn't be as tiresome as the heroine of Katherine Dieckmann's insufferable comedy "Motherhood."
Post Launch Party (budget $10.75)
In an effort to save face and to try and recoup some lost sales Motherhood was released on DVD in the US in time for mother’s day. Now the movie’s producer Jana Edelbaum, is looking into the reasons for this, and so far all the blame is going firmly onto the shoulders of the Marketing firm (Metrodrome) hired to promote the movie in the UK., and made this quote “ "The reviews were very poor indeed but that alone isn't enough to explain this. It's a reasonable assumption that there was a marketing and advertising catastrophe, and people didn't know it was showing. But it should have attracted more than 11 people in passing trade alone. Apollo cinemas, after all, aren't in tucked-away places. They're all prominently located. I'm baffled?”
Could the answer for the poor takings possibly be that it was actually a really bad movie?
Looking on the bright side, at least it earned more money than. My Nikifor, a Polish movie which took box office receipts of £7 during its UK premier weekend in 2007

Great article Sam...personally this movie wasn't horrible but it should have been released straight to DVD in the beginning.

Thanks Sam, OK stand up..We want to see the one person who went to see the movie on Sunday. Not only did you go alone, you were the only one in the theater. You could of left your Cell phone on and chatted away without me telling you to shut up and throwing popcorn at you.

Sorry Thanks, uncle_ALF_and_auntie_social.
Thanks all for the comments(Esp Zoran, cheer's),the one thing I forgot to add to the article, was the fact that in all the news stories I read while researching this, is that none of them anywhere mentioned copyright infringement or illegal file sharing, for being the reason for the movie flopping! but I suppose that will come in time, once Jana Edelbaum has tried to recoup some money by suing Metrodrome for poor marketing.
Thanks Uncle and Auntie very puzzling and comical article. I have had this film for quite some time now but never got around to it. Ill have to watch a bit to give it a review of my own. Keep up the great work!

worst movie this year
Maybe it's just that anyone that IS actually a parent doesn't want to go to a theatre to watch another parent whine about having a crappy day as a parent. As a parent myself I'd just as soon go see something fun, entertaining or just about ANYTHING completely NOT related to being a parent........:D

Assuming that a movie was only released in the cinema, the producers may well be concerned at the audience. However, in the UK, on the day the movie was available to watch in the cinema, it was also available to buy through the DVD.
Simply on the premise that a movie released to the cinema will eventually be pirated, then far better that those will buy a new to release movie on first generation DVD, rather than download a very bad copy, filmed in the cinema, with the video track being unimaginately dark, and the audio track being full of audience noise.
A good marketing approach even if the movie were dire... and with this movie, at least you have a quality cast, a reasonable production in comparison with other trash which is released about 6 months after the cinema release,

I agree with OneTiger64. Why on earth would a mother want to watch some other mother deal with what is a normal day at home. We don't even want to laugh about it - its crap! Its like a mechanic watching a film about how to rebuild a family sedan engine - meh! I didn't like the movie and it was one of those ones I am glad I downloaded and didnt pay for. It really was crap. And I did not hear any reviews either way before I watched it. BTW I had a screener so my copy was excellent - it was the film that was crap. I found the protagonist to be self righteous and a pity party. She wasn't a good friend to her best friend as she let the biggest and almight secret out(who the crap does that to their friend) all because she was disorganised and felt sorry for herself. A rather unimaginative waste of time for me.
