The Australians Combine Internet and TV

According to the recent research, most of people today multitask using gadgets while watching TV. The same results showed that subscriptions remain stable in the meantime. Indeed, 80% of the Australians multitask using gadgets when watching television, while over 50% own a tablet, laptop or smartphone.

Apparently, the worldwide web will soon take over from television as Australia’s favorite entertainment source – the industry experts point out that the country reaches the so-called “digital tipping point”. As for me, I stopped watching the box a dozen years ago and feel great – you know where I get movies for the family evenings (right, in cinema theatres). I am not an Australian though. Ooops.

Let’s get back to the upside down world. The Deloitte’s annual survey of media consumption has recently found that the Australians are now as likely to rank the Internet in their top 3 entertainment sources as they are television. The result revealed that about 8 in 10 of 2,300 respondents admitted they multitask on their portable devices while watching TV. In addition, more than 50% of them own a tablet, laptop and smartphone.

The researchers pointed out that the report – the 3rd of its kind – proves that digital has finally “come of age”. According to their statement, their findings on what they use, where they use it and how, all indicate that the citizens of the country are very sophisticated and savvy when it comes to digital.

However, the research featured no sign that people are ditching their pay TV subscriptions – just like before, the cancellations rate remained stable at the level of 4%. The trend is moving in the other direction: Deloitte said that people are now supplementing their pay TV subscriptions with web services.

One of the interesting facts is that bingeing on TV series is becoming more common as the Australians move online. According to the results of the research, over 70% of 2,300 respondents said that they have watched at least 3 episodes in a single session.

Increase in the use of the Internet is due to the fast development of social networking. The same research shows that social media use rocketed by 170% in 2013, and more than half of the respondents admitted they post daily.

mwd25 avatar"However, the research featured no sign that people are ditching their pay TV subscriptions – just like before, the cancellations rate remained stable at the level of 4%."......I guess big cable is still trying to spin these numbers so they can tell us how everyone still uses cable.....I think not, If you have say,2000 people and in June 200 cancel their service, also July 200 cancel....same in August,September and October. Big cable says that the percentage of cancellations are "stable" Yea,i Guess, but you also have HALF of your 2000 that has canceled!!!!People getting rid of cable is NOT stable. The numbers are increasing month after month. Watch, its going to cost $10 a month for cable soon, they will get sooooo desperate, the writings on the wall.

KingTubby avatarI'm an Aussie and i have had my cable internet combined with home phone and streaming payTV service for over a year now so i find this article to be old news... bith internet (30mbit cable), paytv (20mbit cable) and phone (voip) and all on the same line and cost me $120 per month. Before that the plan was $110 a month just for phone & internet and an extra $120 a month for foxel cable tv... i called optus and they offered a much cheaper deal so bye bye foxtel lol and foxtel even haggled me down to $10 a month for keeping their service... they wouldn't take NO for an answer and i ended up arguing with them bigtime just to get my service cancelled! (i was outside of contact and the sales girl got shi*ty with me because i just kept saying NO over & over again)

beano111 avatarA bit of punctuation here and there wouldn't go astray.
I get what you are saying though.I also only watch main Australian sporting shows on TV (V8s, footy, cricket.) The rest of the time my TV is used for the net or gaming.
