Sony Computer Entertainment Company has recently announced that it is going to drop the feature "Other Operating System support” from non-slim PlayStation 3s. So, PS3 owners willing to use an alternative operating system on the consoles may say goodbye to their beloved Linux on the April 1st – that’s the date Sony is blocking adoption of other OS on its powerhouse platform. However, Sony did not comment on what is going to happen to the PlayStation 3 drive partition.
The removal of the option, which used to allow installing alternative operation systems, is supposed to be enforced by the company because of security issues. This is coming into effect tomorrow, Thursday, being the part of a new 3.21build of PS3 Firmware. This version won’t support the “Other OS” feature, which was available on previous PS3 systems before current slim models.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe placed a warning on their official blog, asking the customers, currently using feature of Linux support and willing to update the firmware to 3.21 version, to make sure they back up all information from the hard drive partition with “Other Operating System”, because they won’t be able to access it after completing the update.
Nevertheless, you are never forced to update your firmware, as it is not a mandatory procedure, so that can be a way out for those PS3 owners who are willing to carry on using a Linux operating system regardless.
But Sony has a tiny “but” here, stating that users failed to accept the update won’t be able to access the PSN (PlayStation Network). Also using Blu-ray movie and games discs requiring version 3.21 will not be possible.
Sony has definitely changed its view on the giving their customers a possibility to use Linux OS. Earlier, right after the start of PlayStation 2, the company widely used the fact that it can run Linux in its commercials. On PS3s there were no Linux pre-installed, but was above mentioned feature available, as Sony announced it was intended for the owners to be able to transform a console into a home computer.
Well, actually few gamers really needed that feature, as opposed to those, who was using the console for different purposes, and that’s quite a market for Sony among them. For example, some scientists are said to be using Linux Operating System on the consoles to wire up their strings in order to get cheap supercomputer.

loads of ppl on the net said it was going to april fool, but it aint just had to install it, it wont let you play online either until its installed, i never used the option on it so i aint really missing out but i guess other ppl will do
This is not fair. i have yellow dog installed on my ps3 and now them bastards arnt going to let me use it. just not right. this would be like microsoft blocking a dvd burner!!! what good is this after 2 years of having and using this feature and yes i play online
Why not try using our numbers to protest it? WE ARE A LARGE group of consumers so why not start using our power? Look what happened in the 60's and 70's people protesting forced a government to change policy and get out of a war. PEOPLE UNITE! PEOPLE POWER!

iT is not necessary to have a linux as linux is easily hackable sony got rid of it for good.8)
Oh Well back to PC to Rip Blue rays No Big Deal LMAO
Thanks for post SaM,never had PS3 online and never will, its just another way for a huge corporation to get your personal details!
uh and another way to get all your updates so you can watch the newest blu-rays (BD rips arent half as good), play with others online, stream netflix, and countless other things. if you dont have it online then your not having as much fun as you could be uncle ALF.
i never used linux with mine but the other guy had a point although the protesting really didnt end the war (went on for years after protesting started) the customer has all the power. complain complain and then complain some more. the problem is the linux users are a minority. i feel for you guys though, and im sorry they did this to you.
This is why I won't even buy or use Sony Play stations..
I am surprised you would complain whay Sony is doing...
Use the Linux and setup your own server like us PC users have done for many many years to play games..
There are even "hacks" our ther where you can play Play station games on a PC...
Also all this to watch - BLU RAY? Come on people really.... I use my PC to watch blu-ray; I assembled an HTPC for the living room that I can and do play games on; watch blu-ray movies and much more.
Allot of the Sony games have PC versions as well and if not... There are some very good alternatives out there...
if your using your pc as a blu-ray player then your not getting the best possible picture. how good your picture is depends on what kind of blu-ray player your using (your tv, cables, line conditioner, and the blu-ray disc as well). but a huge part of it is your player. ive owned many players since the first gen and the PS3 gives you hands down the best performance i have seen. i wanted nothing to do with a PS3 at first, but after several great reviews in home theater magazine (sound and vision too) i broke down and bought one. no player has come close to touching the PS3. I have a blu-ray drive in my pc, and have hooked it up to my pioneer kuro before. the results were average at best. if your happy with an average blu-ray picture thats great, but always know there is a much better picture waiting for you. you could give your home theater a huge upgrage for a couple of hundred dollars. and be able to play ALL the games instead of waiting for them to come out on PC.
there is a proxy trick you can use to bypass the update to 3.21 im using as we speak works perfect sign on and everthing im going to wait to see if a custom firmware comes out even though i dont use the os feature i like to know we have it it was sold as a selling point i payed for it hence they shouldn't take it away when ever they feel like it
Just wait, custom firmware will hit the open. Most System modders dont like the idea there platform is limited to the 'opinions' of the manufacturer.
thanks sam!! leekiller you work for sony?

The guy *can't remember his name* is the suspected cause of this because he made an exploit for it. Isn't to thrilled about it. He's pretty much said he's determined to find away around it, and maybe use the exploit for other purposes since sony has done this.
leekiller you have it wrong our protests kept going until the war ended, you make it sound as if we had one or two protests and it ended. I was there I lived it I know the truth.
me too, but the protests went on for years and years nothing changed. we were a mere nusance and thats it. each president still sent young soldiers to die despite all the protests. the war lasted what 15 years or so. protesting did nothing. not quite sure you got my point, or maybe i explained it wrong. and no i dont work for sony. i just believe in buying the best products you can (like the pioneer kuro). infact i only own one sony product, the PS3. like i said before i was very reluctant to buy it (wanted HDDVD to win, but it didnt so i moved on) it was worth every too penny.

@ scourn
The name you're looking for is Geohot aka George Hotz. He's the same guy who unlocked the iphone so if anyone can do it he can. The only problem I see with it is he said his c++ skills are weak so a custom firmware may be far off.
that sucks, i never used that feature either, but i was always curious to how it would work ... guess ill never know now .. thanks for the post
I don't understand how you can say nothing changed. I guess you aren't a part of the generation that lived through it, died because of it and protested it. We raised conscientiousness to the war and caused public sentiment to oppose the war thus were the driving force behind ending the war. Sorry if I misunderstood any part of your post but it does to me seem as if you were saying the protests were brief and ineffective. Even the textbooks at the JR high school were I am employed acknowledge this.
Oh hell maybe I am just too sensitive but the Kent State massacre is still as fresh in my mind as if it was yesterday....
Oh well moving on! I do agree and wish HDDVD would have won. But really I can't tell any difference between the PS3 and my blueray player (Sony). I really wish that wii would have included a way to play dvd and blueray. Oh well I only got it because my wife and daughter love the wii fit. But to be totally honest I like the games too. Esp Naruto, DBZ and Bleach....Second childhood perhaps???

Don't update my PS3 is unplugged from Internet I'm tired of the modifications.
****DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT UPDATING YOUR PS3 TO THE LATEST FIRMAWRE****
Just use PS3.ProxyServer.GUI with a updatelist.txt for your country find it on PS3HAX or PS3NEWS it's awesome it fools the PSN that you have got the latest firmware update I'm still using 3.15 and have been playing COD MW2 for the last 2 days so boycott the 3.21 update
this is because LINUX offers best ripping and video editing tools at faster speed, plus all for FREE!
SONY can not afford this. LOL
