The tech giant made a decision to pull the support plug on old versions of its Internet Explorer. Microsoft formulated the decision in its announcement as “prioritizing helping users stay updated with the latest version of IE”.
The company claimed that old versions of browser represent a major challenge in keeping the Internet ecosystem safer and more secure. Therefore, modern Internet browsers feature better security protection. For instance, Internet Explorer 11 has such features as Enhanced Protected Mode to help keep customers safer. Of course, it is unsurprising that the most recent and fully-patched version of the web browser is more secure than older versions.
So, starting January 12, 2016, only Internet Explorer versions 9-11 (depending on the platform) will be supported by Microsoft. In other words, after this date, only the most recent version of IE available for a supported OS will receive technical support and security updates. XP was not even in the list, of course.
Therefore, users currently running Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 9, or Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7 SP1 will have to switch to IE 11 if they want to continue receiving security updates and technical support. The company notifies all its customers that for more details regarding support timelines on its operating systems they can refer to the Microsoft Support Lifecycle website.
The company also announced that it is introducing new features and resources to help people upgrade and stay up-to-date with the latest web browser.

I event don't have IE, using Zorin OS 9 Linux
I always use chrome with adblock plus
speaking from the standpoint of someone who builds computers and does OS installations & reinstallations all the time, i dont like IE and i never have. Even from when you first launch it, and if you're quick enough, as soon as it opens i click the STOP (X) button in the browser bar to attempt to stop the default pages from loading but it never works. it always force-opens another tab which is the usual welcome stuff. Admittedly firefox does the same thing but the stop button actually works if you click it and the pages will stop. IE will force open a new window no matter what... annoying... anyway that's my 2 cents worth
I'm using Zorin and Firefox.

Win8.1 with MS account login and then IE 11 automatically logs on to my onedrive and email so me its a little more convenient for me.|

Well, now this is interesting giving up on their old operating system plus the browser,.... Love the comments, here's some educational information for free, when windows upgrade to scripting on the sixth level of OS', they have to dump internet explorer because it is the main explorer.exe extension of opening a window, want a cheep browser, get MS Studio's, drag a window into the work space, drag a tag bar or address bar into the window in the work space, interesting huh, any news on chrome fixing their hackable browser yet? Bin discussing it since last fall and didn't tell the users for 7 months, all adroids were compromised, but hey, using a computer engineers information on how to build php script to run and test hardware, basis for window's vista and up, no C++ just short form java, to use shh to hack every electronical device, hey apples just compamised right, better turn the UNIX plate again and look for a different sting because the two friends just got caught giving the same system with different names, C#,C++,Java <-> Debian, Linux, Novel, Java. Interesting huh, Java in 1994 at the rise of the internet, Steal Virus, Trogens, Ect. VCL Lab, Viral Creation Lab, still has the extension too, interesting if someone finds that easy to use menu C# program and launches it today, curious what would happen? Love all history by the way, Mozilla is the main attack for Red and Black hats right now as it took the lead as it pretty much is an os on its own. Have fun;)
Its no loss really, other than for the MS sheeple. I like Opera at the mo, and have been using Live CD's and encrypted USB devices, just playing with different Linux Distro's to see which works best. Zorin - very windows 7 esque. Tails and iPrediaOS are good for security compared to other Linux distro's although if you know what you're doing most Linux releases can be set up for stronger security and definitely better than windows. At the end of the day knowledge is the best defence and misinformation.
Who the heck calls for support from Microsoft? Not me.
