Australian Users Have No Choice on Net Filter

Stephen Conroy, Broadband Minister of Australia recently confirmed they won’t allow users to opt out of the Internet filter. As you remember, earlier he suggested filtering in order to protect children, presuming the regime to be voluntary. But the original plan rapidly turned into the government’s effort to force Internet Service Providers to filter the web in the context of illicit and insulting content obligingly. So it quickly spiraled from an innocent effort to protect kids in some way from child porno to banning legal porno, peer-to-peer networks and gambling. The filtering list expanded from Adult 18+ websites to those containing crime, cruelty and sex.

Stephen Conroy also made an attempt to protect his efforts on the radio program “Australia Talks” before introducing it to the Parliament. During the radio interview he said clearly that no exceptions for users will be made, and that he doesn’t consider the Internet something special to defend it so hard.

Some critics have already expressed their opinion out load – Australian model of filtering is more complicated technically than that of Iran, which in the list of having the most repressive censorship in the world. China also joined the race, implementing the similar filtering campaign, which caused Goggle leaving the country. It officially announced its plans of leaving a home of the greatest number of people using Internet.

The reason was that the company couldn’t stand it to take the dictation of communist authorities and keep filtering its results any longer. It seemed to be just matter of time for scrutiny to also fall to other democratic countries, which planned to set up Internet filters to their own – like Australia did. The world’s largest search engine confirmed it will most likely leave Australia as well if Conroy’s system is approved.

Google and Conroy can’t understand each other – the company says it agrees with filtering child porno but not with compulsory ISP filtering regime. Conroy says in respond that Goggle would never leave either China or Australia because of lost profits.

The most stupid thing in these debates is that this planning filtering would never do what it was intended to do – stop child porn, especially if it wouldn’t block file-sharing, as well as prevent vultures reaching kids in social networks or chats. Those criminals are well-prepared to such measures and will surely be able to circumvent a filter.

dubbsizzle avatarGovernment officials must be really stupid when it comes to how to use the internet. There is a work around for everything. And if there isn't. Someone comes up with an app for it or some instructions on how to do it. The internet is a living thing and you can't stop it from growing.

msmsm avatarCensorship is something we just don't need here in Aus.
But being one of those that have seen a copy of the list of web addresses that Stephen Conroy wants to be filtered, some of these sites just in name we don't need.
I wont give the web addresses but a lot of the sites are pornographic, contain incest and pedophilia material.
But also there are non offensive material like poker sites, and even a few you tube addresses.
The big issue is that the final filter list will not be made available to the general public, so only they will know. That is why we need to fight this.

cyberartist avatarSome Aussies see the danger - and some of us are vocal about it - most are complacent. Many dont know the implications of this. It is being introduced by stealth really - receives very little publicity and most punters here in oz just think its a wayt to get rid of kiddie porn. They are unaware that it wont even do that properly. They certainly havent sat down to think about the far reaching implications of this. Whenever the media does report on this story - it amazes me how P2P is always part of the discussion. Over time the ignorant and ill informed are being led to believe that everyone who uses P2P is a sick son of a bitch who relishes in kiddie porn - bestiality - snuff movies - etc etc.
If anyone here in Australia wants to be involved in taking a stand against this crap then go to freeweb.org - trust me there are still some Australians with brains and balls...
