The results of the recent survey showed that almost 3/4 of the US Internet users claimed they have witnessed online harassment. 40% said they experienced it themselves. It was found out that young adults are most likely to have witnessed and experienced harassment on the Internet. Women aged 18-24 have experienced it disproportionately in comparison with other demographic groups.
About 3,000 Americans were interviewed for the study. Harassment was divided into two categories: “less severe”, including name-calling and attempts to embarrass people; and “more severe”, covering physical threats, stalking and sexual harassment.
According to the report, 73% of American Internet users have witnessed Internet harassment, with 40% having been its target. In the group of 18-29 year-olds, the figures rise to 92% and 65% accordingly.
Of people who’ve become a target of Internet harassment, 55% said it had exclusively been the less severe kind. Their share amounted to 22% of all users. In the meantime, 45% had also experienced more severe forms of harassment. Unsurprisingly, young women aged 18-24 were particular targets: more than ¼ of them say they have been stalked online, and the same number of them has been the target of sexual harassment.
As for male Internet users, they are more likely to have been physically threatened on the Internet: 26% compared with 23% of women aged 19-24. In total, men are more likely to experience any kind of online harassment: 44% compared with 37% of women.
Nevertheless, the report showed that women suffer more after the event: 38% of harassed women said they found it very upsetting, compared with 17% of harassed men. 2/3 of those who have been harassed on the Internet said the most recent incident happened on a social networking website or application, 22% pointed at the comments section of a website; 16% at an online game; 16% at a personal email account; and 10% at a discussion service.
The study also tried to figure out how welcoming Internet services were towards men and women. Here the report shows that online gaming stands out: more than a half of respondents believed that online games websites were equally welcoming to both sexes, but 44% of them believed they were more welcoming towards men. However, the research was carried out before the explosion of the “Gamergate” controversy – it is known that he latter has included a heated debate about harassment of women in and around the games industry.
The respondents also told how they had responded to the harassment. 60% said they had ignored it. Of the rest, 47% confronted the person online, 44% unfriended or blocked them, and 22% reported them to the relevant service.
The research also revealed that 92% of people believe the Internet allows people to be more critical of others, while 68% agreed it allows to support others as well. The study only covered the US adults, but not the issues like cyberbullying for children up to the age of 18.

Turn off the internet or use aliases or both.. How big of a problem is this really? If you allow people on your Facebook(realname) That might herass you, then you are doing something wrong. And yes the internet allows you to critique people anonymousely.. But if you take an anonymous text seriously you are an emotional idiot.

Trust me you learn to use ignore and block a lot senseless BS fast .
Only stupid idiots let themselves be harassed on the Internet. I just want to punch them in the face.

i agree with @3 and they interviewed only 3,000 people which is only a very little part of whole population...i mean to say that they should interview at least 50percent of population for such a report...
Really people, you won't change your perspective and be a bit polite towards the sensitive ones on the net.
People come online to get away from their real life so it won't hurt to treat them nicely online, we already have too much stress offline and yet some of the idiots insist in abusing people online. On top of that all, we've got users saying "Only stupid idiots let themselves be harassed on the Internet" , "you are an emotional idiot".
Well, why don't you say only stupid idiots get themselves raped, cos that's about the same thing as getting themselves harassed, no one asked for it, its just the fault of cyber bullies and harassers and you all make it sound like the fault of harassed.
Change your psychology, be polite, if there's something or someone that's annoying you, then ask politely to stop, don't go all guns out.
All this abuse and 'harassment' on the internet is actually a really 'good' thing, why? well it calls us ( the human race ) out for what we really are without the restraints of face to face social conditioning. Repulsive, disgusting, angry racists, sexists... predators etc etc if you want a true snapshot of what we are like you only have to look online. As for harassment it's time we got on top of the insidious bombardment of companies like google and amazon hijacking our browsers with endless adverts for something we casually looked at on some online shopping page because THAT is harassment of the worse kind.
dnt tolerate them to abused you. find theme and kick there assess . tnx great share
if you can't take it then don't post on message, comment or other locations where people are free to reply to your line of thinking, and actually challenge it!!! It's not like you were forced to post that comment on a news article, now was it??
I haven't been harassed like I have on the internet in the real world, EVER.
I think i have been traumatized from people online.

Anyone care to buy a ticket for the secret grammar and spelling policeman's ball?
It's not a dance; it's a raffle.
just think the other 60% had a great time!!
you know what toptek? alot of people act tough when they are on the internet and say they would do this and that and call other users names like Bare faced pussies etc.. you see it works both ways, why comment like you did it only makes you look just as bad as those you are bitching about, you insinuate that you would kick someones ass if they were in front of you for what they did, how are we to know that you are not the same as the others just talking tough because in reality you KNOW you will never run into anyone from the net, that is the safety and the anonimity that the web offers, I think it best that people just keep the tough guy comments to themselves,THAT is annoying.
P.S, very well said number 5 I agree with you totally!!
my base keeps getting attacked in a game...... does that mean im being harrassed too?
just need to know coz i hear that flashing your headlights at someone in front of you is road rage..
and since the question was only asked of americans.. is this why they bomb the hell out of the rest of the world, coz someone called them a pussy online once?
i agree with #6 i bought something off amazon once and now get 10 email a day and little advert windows everywhere i go
now if that isnt harrassment i dont know what is
i think more people actually get harrassed aand stalked by telesales geeks, i hung up on one and told him i wasnt interested, most are thankful coz time is money and they would prefer to call 3 other people instead of arguing with me, but on one occassion one little prick rang me back and asked how i knew i wasnt interested if i hadnt heard what he had to say...
It normally comes from anger and ego. Sometimes from lust. Sometimes envy or worse still jealousy. But generally talking I would think that people attack others because of the weaknesses of themselves losers, failures, idiots, wannabes etc.
The truth is that most people are depressed and unhappy, and it is people who use the internet.
