The software giant announced the end of nearly 3 decades of history, launching its first free version of Windows. Microsoft recently unveiled Windows 10, its first update in 2 years, while announcing that a new operating system would be a free upgrade (only for the first year though) for users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone. Microsoft is planning to release Windows 10 later in 2015, but no specific date is set yet.
However, there were even more surprises from Microsoft: the company also unveiled its headset, Hololens, which will work with Windows 10 by allowing people to interact with 3D holograms, including holographic Skype calls. It should be noted that the development comes shortly after Google shut down the development phase of Google Glass, its online-enabled headset.
The industry observers point out that the decision to distribute Windows 10 for free marks a major shift for Microsoft, because the company has always made most of its profits from selling its OS – Bill Gates launched its first version, Windows 1, back in 1985. Although the company does not provide specific figures for Windows’ revenues anymore, it is known that they were eclipsed by its Office suite of services in 2013.
Microsoft still dominates the market of personal computers, but loses to Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS in mobile computing. The company was previously called to offer its operating system for free in order to outrun its rivals, which do not charge for their software.
Windows 10 will be able to run across personal computers, mobiles, tablets and even Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console. The new version of Windows will also bring back Windows Start menu, which was dropped in Windows 8. The latter, by the way, failed to convince many Microsoft users to upgrade – the statistics say that the OS, launched three years ago, is currently on 10% of PCs and 20% of tablets.
Microsoft previewed the new version of Windows to business customers back in 2014 and announced that it would skip Windows 9 in its attempt to mark a break with the past (or maybe just because Windows 9 could have problems due to being confused with Windows 95 and 98 by some software). The developer preview has been downloaded 1.7 million times and 800,000 pieces of feedback have been left.

Uuugh. Same here, alienzombie.
I used 8/8.1 for about a year, then just got fed-up with the advertising and spying....went back to 7 to stay. No regrets.
And Win 10 IS SO FKING UGLY!! Come on, windowed apps?! Ugly tiles in start menu?! They should have never brought the start menu back, or had apps run in windowed mode. I mean, I like the start menu fine in Windows 7, but there's no need for it in 8+. 10 is looking to be more of a Frankenstein monster than 8/8.1 ever was. Total chaos. And Cortana? It might be quite useful, by and large, but it's yet more SPYWARE to deal with....so, again, NO. I mean, I'm no cyber-criminal or anything (although torrenting is considered criminal nowadays by the powers-that-shouldn't-be)...but, aside from whether I am or not, I don't want Big Brother, Big Sister, Big Mamma, or Big Daddy "peeping through my Windows"! I also don't leave my doors unlocked and my curtains wide open. I don't understand why more people aren't on the same page. I guess most people are truly sheep in human clothing.
MS offering upgrades to Win 10 is parallel to a heroine dealer giving you the first dime-sack for free. Once you take the bait, he has his hooks in you and will bleed you dry.
I'm staying with 7, more-than-likely, until support ends....then, I dunno what I'll do. Try to learn Linux maybe.
@2 Nice comment made me chuckle

its a trap lol,
office 365 came out to test waters, the concept is working so they mark office pro end of life, now all office will be 365 soon, the concept is more profitable recurring revenue, now you cant keep a package for years, and less hacking office "so called more affordable"
if that works, bear in mind win 10 if free to help change negative mind set of win 8, also no retail package will be available, if all go well for them and people adjust to the new office only being 365 and win 10 gains favor, i believe they heading to make windows subscription based too.
@YourNumbr1Fan: 90% people are truly sheep in human clothing. 9% Work for better world. 1% Wolfs in human clothing.
I love Linux. The first thing i do when i buy a laptop is uninstall windows .
Well yes, of course Microsoft what their latest app stores installed on your machine, same as Apple always including iTunes or the deals both plus Android have with Google and why its always installed 'out of the box'. Coupled with the development control they all have over App and game publishers.. control, control, control. I only use a stripped out version of Windows for gaming. Everything else is Linux and will remain Linux.. couldn't care less about a new Windows free or not. Why Linux isn’t the top OS is beyond me.

You do know Microsoft and apple are American companies don't you? Personally I love windows 8.1 but I know im in the minority but am gona give 10 a go. Theres some interesting cross compatibility that intrigues me|

I've been using Win 8.1 since shortly after it was released, and since I disable some of the 'Services' that are enabled by default (and switch others from 'automatic' to 'manual'), I've NEVER had a 'spyware' or 'Advertising' issue. (I'm also sitting behind 2 hardware and one software firewall [Outpost, NOT Windows Firewall])
Of course I do NOT use Internet Explorer (Waterfox is my browser of choice), OR the App Store (the ONLY way I let the OS connect to Microsoft servers is via Windows Update, and then it's a MANUAL Update). The ONLY MS programs installed on MY computer, besides the OS, is Office 2010 and a few games.
As for the Start Button ... Stardock solved THAT problem a few weeks after MS announced that Win 8 wouldn't have one. Their Start8 program works GREAT.

It is to live with resignation to have the windows forever because neither the companies can get rid of windows to sell. besides, it is beautiful if it was bought and always compare with the striking of ios's and linux's.
It may be better for gaming?
Hmmm Bill Gates who is one of the smartest people on earth and the richest is giving away a 100.00 + op system for free. You still complain? 8.1 has no ads or viruses for me and thats because I know how to set it up right. do some research and it is real easy to fix. Bill Gates gives billions to charity and helping the poor and not bad for evil robber baron. 10 will rule just like windows usually does
new pc's come standard with latest Windows had 8 on new on got couple years ago could not get my head round using them boxes when press start menu button soon switched it back to 7
Let me guess, some of you deleted a couple of NSA registry keys and think you're safe. Good grief.
I agree with u #2 I am a XP user and I don't want 2 change that ive been using my Win 8 asus for about a yr now im not 2 happy with it nor upset there are ways aroud em but I also hat tiles and windowed apps -_- they annoy me much and side swiping ........

Ok # 2,you say "MS offering upgrades to Win 10 is parallel to a heroine dealer giving you the first dime-sack for free. Once you take the bait, he has his hooks in you and will bleed you dry"
The reason the heroin dealer has his hooks in you is because heroin is...uhmmm,I dont know...AWESOME!!!!
Unless windows 10 is awesome, I highly doubt Microsoft will be getting their hooks into anyone. Nice comment though

Its a Trap.
No matter how good you THINK you are at setting Win 8/8.1/10 up to minimize the spying (I too am a tech wiz, am REAL savvy as a matter of fact), you are fooling yourself if you think you have disabled or bypassed all of the coding that is built-in to give away your location, what software you have installed, what files you open, etc. Say what you want, but I know and you know better. So it's just a question of whether-or-not you are cool with the game. You aren't safe behind a hundred firewalls either. And with these newest computers, you aren't even safe OFFLINE. There exists a way to access your data remotely. Call me a tinfoil-hat guy, that's fine with me. But I know what I'm talking about. Hell, to be honest, even Windows 7 isn't secure. But 7 is loaded with less trojans.
@mwd25: heroine is awesome? whatever. Grow up. If you don't have something intelligent to say, why bother?
@johnmc963: Bill Gates is also a leading pusher of population reduction propaganda, and promotes using VACCINES to achieve that end. He is NOT a nice guy. You need to do a little more research into who he and his wife Linda really are. Rich as hell, yes. No doubt. But FAR from being philanthropists. I could post links to all kinds of dirty-dealings that these two pieces of crap have been involved with, but what's the point? If you've already got your mind made up, thinking I'm full of crap and Bill Gates is Santa Clause, I'm not gonna bother trying to make a case. My original comment was for alienzombie to begin with; I wasn't trying to spark a back-and-forth debate on anything.

Free is NEVER free, what you are actually agreeing to is "Quid Pro Quo" They give you something but want something in return, so, you get a shiny new "FREE" OS and they take your freedoms and rights to privacy, the joke is that you agree to it, all of this is tantamount to mass stalking but on the NSA Bunny-Boiler level.
Philanthropy may not be the nice thing you think it is, ever heard of the phrase "with the best of intentions" one idea is that it keeps a society deficient, so as an analogy... You have a bucket of water, the bucket has a hole in it and obviously the water leaks out, philanthropy merely supplies a few cups to catch the water and puts the water back into the bucket, that doesn't really address the problem and on the surface it looks like the problem has been solved yay! but it hasn't Boo!, what you have done is create a market for cups, when what you really need to do is buy a bucket.
What does this really mean? it means philanthropy maintains a status quo, the problems are still there and philanthropy, actually doesn't allow society to fix itself.
Another analogy; as if the first wasn't enough, is philanthropy is a man walking down the road, he see's another man who has twisted his ankle, so he offers to carry him until his ankle is better, philanthropy carries this man for ages and what philanthropy chooses to ignore is that the carried man's ankle will never get better until he starts to walk on it. There are problems on both parts, the man knows he needs to walk to get better but is too lazy and apathetic to do so and while ever philanthropy is carrying him he will let him, philanthropy also knows this but he doesn't want to stop carrying him because philanthropy's vanity prevents him from accepting that what he is doing is actually wrong and two broken pieces will never complete a jigsaw. The end. lol!
Sometimes you have to see beyond a veil of generosity to find the true motive. When someone asks you for something be mindful that there may be an ulterior motive, and a cost greater than the one intended, so tread carefully my friends.
@johnmc963 : It is not because you know how to set it up but you do not know how to find a virus on your system.
@Jooge You are aware that Ubuntu 14.04 sends all of your searches, online or local system, to Amazon... unless you turn it off. Run the command sudo apt-get purge unity-webapps-common to get rid of that. Stick with an older version or go Mint.
They make more money out of microsoft office? Libre office is as performant and have more extensions to export files, it is built in for linux and free on mac and windoes...
i work as an i.t. technician. 99% of my dealings with windows 8.x were, and i quote: "please get rid of this sh*t and put windows 7 back on for me. here's my original disc!"
as for the remaining 1%, it was 1 guy who wanted to "try it out", so i sold him a retail copy. never heard back from him. maybe he hates me now lol
Free is NEVER FREE and windows 7 is better
Nothing from Microsoft is for Gratis and as many others have commented giving it away so the illusion of freedom is perpetuated whilst they upgrade you to a drone operating system secured by them is laughable at best.I used to dual boot with windows I won`t even have it on my systems now not that I paid for any of it past win xp since it took them almost 10 years to make that run right and everything else is just upgraded mobile and vista with Backdoors.Since the advances in Linux distro`s for the more click and point members of the community and built in installers on live CD`s I also have to recommend Fedora and Ubuntu as free operating systems that are built by people for people, not built by money grabbing ,power hungry litigious spying corporations working for the Man.
Hey, I've see this done before... yeah get it for free, and only pay $9.99 if you want to be able to use the Start Menu!... lol. oh You want to use it in a network a be able to share awww too bad u need the Mega-Ultimate version it only cost $399.99 to upgrade!... awww too bad!... and even if you don't want to upgrade it will be jammed down your Throat because everything you buy in 2015 will come with windows 10. Gotta love M£¢RØ$؃T!
i am really excited for this new experience..

i like windows 8.1
Hey Complain, they take user insight, but everyone's right, crap and crap, but think 20 years of a drop menu and they are the most used home operating system plus the hardware is from original IBM. Now do that free upgrade with the activator please and I'll be at your door, Lol, Smart don't you think? How do you catch a pirate, offer an upgrade they are going to try to hack, most cracked software is 32 bit, Win 7 update the platform on win 7 32 bit to 64 bit platform through updates. Mac is proprietary to the hardware and is installed by app now unless you have 10. Linux runs good but which one matches your hardware? Especially if it was designed as one of the other two company affiliates. Have fun when there is only 3 and they cornered you.
@lego247: What are you trying to tell?

Lol, there will be one thing or the other - when they mean free. It won't be just free, even for a year.
When Microsoft can access 3 million computers without the consent or knowledge of the users and drop a payload (supposedly to prevent a virus spreading, which it did anyway)bypassing all firewalls and safegaurds how safe do you feel using anything they bring out,as in their TOS despite paying over 200 GBP for a windows operating system (ultimate)they still own and have proprietary use of the operating system whether its on your laptop, phone or PC and have free reign over what they do with it despite whatever you payed out for it.Windows 10 .184.108.40.206.15 it makes no odds they will hit you up for payment sooner than later and in the mean time be logging you wherever you are not matter how safe you think you are,70+ fusion centres do this 24/7 now,if people want to use windoze they may as well shackle themselves to their computers now as they are enslaved to the Man the moment they turn on the power button.
Good points, Embolism. For sure.
When I said that I was "a tech wiz", I was only meaning in Windows. If I was half as savvy in Linux, I'd definitely be cutting my ties with MS for final. Last time I installed a distro, I was using Rebecca (17.1). I was doing OK with it, starting to figure out the file-system, using some of the services fine....But. Then I started trying to customize it. Ouch. I managed to get a theme I liked installed, but was having the awfullest time getting a particular window-decoration set up. Just about drove me nuts. Finally, after much searching in forums, I was able to get that done. I also experienced quite a few system freezes while running Rebecca.
Deciding to re-install my Windows 7 copy felt like defeat, but I did it, promising to give either 17.1 or some other distro another try when I had more time to learn. I'm an HVACR tech, and don't have a lot of time for being on my computer. Wish I had someone here in my town, where I live, who I could just pay to come to my house and tutor me in Linux. Watching videos on YouTube, reading other tutorials, etc., just don't cut it for me. I guess I'm getting old, harder to teach (I'm 47)...

NO THANK YOU ' MR Gates
@40 have been doing Linux testing for almost 12 years and tried Linux ,Debian and windows distros across the board, thankfully most of the latest Distro`s from linux are pretty much click and point since having to compile programs was such a chore which is why I use Fedora with RPM these days and simply use yum in terminal or update through the built in package management updates.Whether its Mint,Ubuntu,Fedora,Kanopix,Kanotix,Blag,Mandrake or one of the many others I have always enjoyed other systems to Microsoft with the exception of suse which was developed by Novell in conjunction with Microsoft and which I found lacking in respect of other operating systems of the time, from fedora 8 onwards I used to dual boot win xp and fedora using windows just for gaming, but even that has been curtailed since the spying initiative as has my testing of windows applications a shame really as it was through windows testing of all the torrent clients and protocols that I aided in the development of Azureus from it`s inception to a few years ago when the spymasters started their Cyber war on the end users,I am sure I am not alone in my cessation in aiding development and the spying of the USA and its partners will not make for a better /safer internet but merely aid in stifling it`s advancement since removing peoples privacy will sap the incentive to make it better for many who`s endeavours to test systems and to make better programs will either see them arrested or have their ideas used surreptitiously by the corporations for their own ends and profit.
Linux rules,Microsoft drools. (:^D)
@44: I really think this spying thing is going to backfire on them all (especially the companies like MS)....There are a lot of sheeple who are either oblivious or too dumb to care, but there ARE a lot more people who are NOT cool with it, people who are 'awake', and who will be voting with their wallets. Many are moving off of Microsoft, to Linux, etc., or at least sticking with older versions of Windows, not 'upgrading'. Oh, MS spin-doctors try to paint a rosy picture, saying that Win 8/8.1 (and 10 TP) have been big hits so far, and there are a lot of MS trolls who are constantly leaving "I love Windows 8.1!" comments everywhere---And there ARE quite a few people who DO like Windows 8.1 and are stoked about 10, no doubt. I don't mean to imply that all Windows 8.1 lovers are trolls. But no where near as many as MS would like us to believe, I guarantee it. Truth is, Microsoft is taking some serious financial hits, punches upside the head. It's been a steady rut ever since they released 8, and they've been in that rut since. Just like America's unemployment numbers haven't really improved, even though the "news" tells everyone that things are getting better. Both scenarios are not good, no matter how they're spun. No amount of propaganda can prop up something that stinks so bad for so long. But even if MS does get their sh-- together one day, the trust is GONE and won't come back for a long time.
The regular Internet is doomed. The spymasters are locking it down. Maybe Tor, Freenet, etc., will explode now and take off. I sure hope so. These people pushing us into a corner may just be what the world needs when you think about it. The darknets need a shot in the arm, to have more people/servers/services...and, if the powers-that-shouldn't-be keep up with their senseless assault on freedom, the darknets will BOOM. Along with alternative operating systems, like Tails.
