First of all, you have to accept that Tina Fey and Steve Carell are funny. Otherwise, “Date Night”, where they play a married couple getting mixed up in a crime caper during a common night out, won’t mean anything to you. However, even if you are a fan of them, you might wonder if they can perform together as a couple, especially with Shawn Levy as a director (The Pink Panther, Night at the Museum).
Fortunately, “Date Night” appears to be a good-natured and enjoyable effort, which is in addition often hilarious, as the protagonists mesh surprisingly well. They perform the Fosters, a common married couple from New Jersey, having two kids and a humdrum life. Every week they arrange a date night for themselves, hiring a babysitter for the kids and having the dinner at the same place, until they understand they need something different to keep the spark in their life.
That’s exactly this specific night of their night date in Manhattan, when they get into the trouble, being mistaken for another couple who have run afoul of some crime boss. Two of his guys accost the Fosters, demanding a flash drive they are supposed to have stolen and don't believe when they say they have no idea about it.
That is the old hat formula, when innocents are caught up in the underworld and then have to deal with the consequences using their ordinary-people powers. However, the “Date Night” works it out differently, with the Fosters reacting to such situation exactly the way real people would. Thanks god, they don’t become action heroes or stuff like that, as it would spoil everything.
The relationships in a movie of such kind are getting strengthened when the main heroes face a kind of a menace. You will meet there conversations where they share frustrations like real married people, get jealous and learn from other couples. Finally, against all odds, their story turns out to be sort of sweet.
The good side of the film is that while you see everything as a flaw, you still always know for sure that finally everything will be fine. So you can relax and enjoy it, feeling secure for Tina and Steve doing what they have to do. They can’t displease the audience, trying to be sexy at a strip club, and making their middle-aged efforts more and more funny and amusing. They create a kind of relation with you, getting the film work far better than it could.
