The Swiss based ICCP Foundation has now started detecting pirated material on personal computers and letting the offenders pay the fine right away.
Only problem is the company is fake and the warning is no more than Malware.
The fake company, the ICCP Foundation, also claims to be backed by the Recording Industry Association of America, the Motion Picture Association of America and others. “It appears to scan the user’s hard drive for .torrent files and displays these as ’evidence’ of an earlier infringement,” wrote TorrentFreak, which first disclosed the malware.
The user is then offered an option to settle the case right away or face imprisonment and fines. The fee to settle out of court? $399.85.
This is a clear departure from the norm when it comes to malware. Generally they try for much smaller payments in the hopes that someone is willing to spent 5-10 dollars.
It would appear that the malware creators are trying to capitalize on the much publicized legal actions by the Independent Filmmakers Association where tens of thousands of peer to peer users are being brought to court for downloading independent films.
The malware redirects the user to the ICCP website where it threatens them with 5 years in prison and $250,000 but offers a quick settlement for a reduced rate.
The user is given the option to settle or pass the information to the courts. If they choose the court route they get another warning, “this action is construed as a refusal to cooperate with the copyright holder.”
You should be safe with a good real-time virus scanner and anti malware software. But if you do happen to get infected please don’t pay the fine. Update your software and run a full system scan. You can also download Malwarebytes antimalware and run a full scan with that if you've not done it already
