Microsoft filed a lawsuit, claiming that it logged hundreds of suspicious product activations from one IP address. The software giant is currently seeking damages.
Such software as operating systems suffers a high piracy rate due to the fact that a user needs to be present on most computers in order for them to work at all. Over the last three decades, Windows OS has been pirated millions of times. The Seattle-based company had to accept this fact as granted, and regular users usually avoided Microsoft’s aggression.
Now at least one pirate is about to find out that the same can’t be said of users pirating Windows on a commercial scale. Microsoft targets a person or persons behind a single Verizon IP address, who are responsible for some serious Windows pirating. The tech giant analyzed product key activation data, including the IP address from which the key was activated. It should be noted that the users voluntarily provided this information when they activated Windows. The forensic tools of the company allow it to analyze billions of Windows activations and discover patterns that make it believe that pirated software was being activated through that particular IP address.
The company detained in its complaint that its cyberforensics have identified hundreds of product key activations originating from a single Verizon IP address. Microsoft claims that those activations make it believe that defendants are using the IP address in question to activate pirated Windows 7. The company provided evidence that the defendant(s) have activated hundreds of copies of its operating system using product keys “stolen” from Microsoft’s supply chain or having a valid license. In some cases, the keys were used more times than their license allows.
Microsoft is now claiming damages resulting from such piracy – aside from immediate injunctive relief and the impounding of all infringing content, the Seattle-based company demands profits attributable to the infringements, treble damages and attorney fees or statutory damages.
This is not the first time when Microsoft launches a lawsuit of such a kind. The company took a similar action last December, targeting a user behind an AT&T account.

Feck microsoft, they deserve all they get in my opinion.
They have stolen money from my xbox account, they have flat out lied to me and they are disrespectful to you if you know/understand something better than they do.
These interactions I have had with microsoft from my opinion of them.
Looks I,m funked then

Why would you need an external IP address to activate a pirated Windows 7?
I have/had a valid license for Windows 7.. but because I re-installed it to many times.. according to microsoft.. my activation Licence is no longer valid. So you can, microsoft, determine pirates but you can't figure out that one code which has only ever been used by one person isn’t being used on 6 million machines? FU, you lost me to Linux for life... kinda grateful because Linux kicks your crappy data mining 'store front' OS out of the ballpark.
i usually take a photo of a license key with my phone while in one of those big electrical retailers

......... and we're talking 'bout most pirated OS :)_(:
When are they going to learn. Every other Os is free!! Thats why Google and Apple have higher market share!!!

Apple Os is not free. You have to bye their product to use it. Whats the matter with you Windows has around 90% of market share.
#onemustang, they do not need to learn because they will always find at least 70% fools-idiots to buy their products even if other OS are free
ogger151 Mac OSX is free from Mountain Lion (10. i started to be with Mac from snow leopard in 2011, before i was on Windows from windows 3.x to vista and i just got pissed off to format at least every year or pay at least 200 bucks to upgrade.
Now with Mac OSX the upgrade to Lion (one year later) was 19 USD only, it was the last OS from mac which was not free (but 19 bucks only ), Mountain lion = free, Maverick = free, Yosemite = free, and i still have the same computer from 2011 nether got a freeze screen nor any bugs, and never formatted ever nor never ever reboot the computer because it is not responding like windows(whatever version)!

wow apple os for free cool. Brb gona go buy a 2000 pound laptop that's only about 800 to get the same pc equivalent, but its worth it cause I get their os free.

Its not free if I have to pay $2000 dollars for a laptop to use it. Ok Then Windows is also free from 8 to 8.1 to 10. And now from 7 to 10.
lol $2000 look like you never went to an apple store ...
Apple laptop starting price at $899, $999, $1099, $1199 after with retina display = $1299, 1499, 1799, 1999 and 2499
and here store-apple-com?us?buy-mac?macbook-pro
replace ? by a slash and - by a dot
Over all nice to read that now windows is free too, finally

Yes for $1099 you get a i5 CPU with a HD Graphics 4000 a processor graphics that is included in the Ivy Bridge processors of 2012 3rd generation and only a 13". It is 2015 I do not want to pay $1099 for a 2012 CPU. Anyway the original point; Windows is free and is still 90% of the market share. You were simply wrong about that. It says a lot when 90% would rather pay for Windows than get OSx for free. Even though WINDOWS IS FREE. And if you had joined the Windows insider program which is also free you can upgrade for free to Win10 from ANY version of Windows. Apple used to actually charge us a $100 so we could beta test there Developer preview. This was the first year they didn't.
Anyone who thinks apple is better than windows is high. What is the release date for most pc games on apple? 6 , 8 , 12 months later? really? Windows rules the OS market for a reason. IT is a quality product. A decent laptop with windows 8.1 - 299 .... Even a good system can be had that plays better pc games than both xbox 1 / ps 4 . Still windows. Care for a screenshot of MY GTA5 on my home built windows pc

Once Apple Computers, (not the REAL "Apple", which is a record label,) dumped the PowerPC architecture for x86 it gave up any rationale for existing. Now all it gives you are mid-range spec'd PCs with laptop RAM in funky little boxes or all-in-ones and tiny li'l laptops that'll cost you twice what a more powerful machine with a 20% larger screen goes for. No PowerPC = no video processing advantage, which was all an Apple Computer was ever good for. Buy the better - and far cheaper! - equipment and if you don't want Windows just reformat and install a Linux/BSD, which is all the Mac OS is in the first place.
I don't think they are looking for individuals that use a pirated copy of windows. But for sake of argument, I have been using Window 7 embedded. You can find it here. It's good for 180 days. Then just re-insrall. I own the OS, but my laptop's HD died. No backup windows 7.
are there any way to avoid this ??
nothing is free from MICROSOFT you have to pay for it pirate copy of OS is no good you can buy license (COA)on EBAY less than $40.00
|Well they have to make an example of these idiots now and again. Linux all the way baby||
