A recently discovered flaw in Apple’s iOS meant that an iPhone could be crashed by receiving a certain string of characters in a text message. The vulnerability was discovered by a group of Reddit users and meant that when such message is received, it instantly crashes the device and causes it to reboot.
Security experts believe that the attack is caused by a glitch in the way the iOS renders Arabic text. In details, when a text message is displayed by a banner alert or notification on the lockscreen, iOS is trying to abbreviate it with an ellipsis, and if the latter is placed in the middle of a set of non-Latin script characters, it causes the system to crash and the device to reboot.
As you can understand, such kind of attack requires a very specific string of text to be sent within an iMessage or regular text message. Indeed, the researchers found out that the text string is very specific and can’t be replicated by accident. If you are worried about being attacked, you can protect your iPhone from the flaw in two ways: to disable notification banners at all or get them on an Apple Watch if you own one.
Some victims of the flaw complained that they can no longer access messages. The others discovered that sending a photo to the contact via the Photos app lets them access the message history and delete the conversation, thus removing the source of the crash.
By the way, this vulnerability is not the first one that causes similar issues on Apple devices, including applications on Macs, to be exposed. Security experts also noted that bugs within 3rd-party apps have also caused similar problems – for example, Snapchat, which allowed attackers to flood devices with data causing them to crash.
