The UK Government is not going to extend its deal with Microsoft to support Windows XP. This move will leave government machines that still run Windows XP vulnerable to hackers.
Normally, ending the software support means that flaws found in such software will remain unpatched and may be exploited by hackers. Microsoft canceled its support for Windows XP, a 14-year-old OS, more than a year ago. However, due to the high number of PCs still running XP in government and businesses, the software maker provided paid-for extended support for another year to help agencies and individuals safely migrate from XP.
Now each UK government department with XP computers will have to seek deals for support with Microsoft directly – this may end up costing the taxpayer even more. Indeed, the Crown Commercial Service said that its extension deal in 2014 saved the government about £20m by buying in bulk in comparison to individual departmental deals. The matter is that some government departments have struggled with the transition to move from Windows XP. For example, the Metropolitan Police Service had to seek a support agreement directly from Microsoft, while HM Revenue and Customs is successfully switching to Windows 7 and 8.1. According to reports, NHS Scotland also has around 2,600 PCs still running Windows XP.
In the meantime, the government’s technology leaders require all the departments to follow the “obsolete platforms security guidance”, published a few weeks ago, which claims that it is vital that all agencies only use software supported by the vendor. The same guidance requires to make plans to migrate from older products as the end of support period is reached.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with XP. A move to 7 would be slightly beneficial but leave 8/8.1 well alone as its rubbish. 10 will probably be a disaster too.
....10 will probably be a disaster too.... I don't think so mate. Cortana, Hololens are too awesome.
I have previewed 10 and IT IS a disaster. I definitely recommend 7 or xp
Switch to Linux.. its free, you can see the code so no hidden back doors. No endless proprietary software costs.. more secure, faster, more reliable. Does everything Windows can do for free.
Austerity? Cameron you haven't a clue where savings can be made, no just continue to waste tax payers money on back hand deals with corporations that have all their users sewn up like sheep.
In response to the Windows comments.. hell yeah, Windows sucks since 7. Glorified marketing machines for morons... or game players : D
From what I'm seeing, what do you know about the world? 10 is crap surely, but it is an attempt to make up for 8 and 8.1 because of the glitch's, XP's platform is good because of dos base system. Now tell me how do those dos programs work on Linux? Linux was still in the baby stage when all those computers where fully running and you really could not install Linux do to non-support of drivers. Window's has it flaws but if you would have just left the platform alone because you didn't want to pay for something, well sorry to say the world has always run on money to say your share of work in the world. I can't believe that I'm defending windows when THEY have given up without Gates, how do you fix code without the original files he built into the platform? Now you have, I can do this because of minor changes to script or I can do that. A bunch of kids pretty much took over Microsoft and think making it look like office is the key as the office or improvement on the text editor has it's base code around to fiddle with. Here kids have my keys to my car, do you know how to drive it? lol, Proprietary software cost is kind of an interesting comment, Do you like your fancy video card (NVidia) or your sound card? Microsoft builds a software platform, how does that work, the most supported company because they got the whole internet to simple terms for basic people to even use this site like this, what html5 maybe Apache with php, wow, wouldn't be here without Microsoft. Ubuntu and other GUI Linux, not without Microsoft, dos redhat was first Linux. Java, like your cell phones, recreation of short form Microsoft originally used to cause virus or code glitches to the competition. Please all of you that listed, build a new platform that can run C#,C++, please, join the challenge and learn the history of computers and the internet.

Well said Datashift; Most people don't have a clue on what's really going on with computers. Go back and learn first!

win 10 free upgrade for the government lol.
They still run XP,Hm
Maybe MS can sell all of the Vista to them they might like it.
#6 - Datashift you are all wrong
PHP and Apache was not meant for windows at all, Linux was not made for DOS, but to replace DOS with a UNIX system, plus > REDHAT was not the first Linux system at all, REDHAT was based on packages to facilitate the updates and was born 4 years later after the original Linux (Linux = 1991, REDHAT = summer 1994)
At the end you need to learn first the real history of computers before to write something you have no idea about
After the introduction of 7 & 8/8.1 I decided not to even bother dual booting with xp which I used for gaming and just stuck to Linux,I always like fedora from Red Hat as free and dual bootable straight off the bat, but have used Debian and linux in dozens of distros and found it more stable and reliable than windoze, which is why the French government and then French schools are going Linux, best off no hidden surprises

What a load of Krap! Seriously...If MS hasn't fixed XP by now, then there is no hope for the other MS operating systems. And yeah, *nix systems are the way. Why do you think NASA used Unix based systems for the Mars missions?? MS wouldn't have made it out of orbit without rebooting or some 200GB patch...
