The author of the 2007 original, Dean Craig, has rewritten it, too. He kept the plot, changed the most of the dialogues, and moved action to Los Angeles. Neil La Bute is the director of the movie, which is the second of this sort in his career after the Lakeside Terrace. So it’s not quite clear who is responsible for the scarcity of laughs. Probably the movie lost something vital while being translated from British to American?

33025719-33025723-large.jpg

It’s quite OK that “Death at a Funeral” was remade despite the original was released only 3 years ago and was in English. What is not OK is that the movie is not as funny as a comedy should be. Well, it's quite pleasant and has a couple of good laughs, but they are so diffused over the movie that they won’t ever build a real momentum.

Let’s see the setting (as we already know the plot). That’s a big and wonderful house in California, where the head of the Barnes family will be buried. The house is occupied by his widow, Cynthia (performed by Loretta Devine), their son, Aaron (played by Chris Rock) and the son’s wife, Michelle (played by Regina Hall). The youngsters want to buy their own house in the near future, tired of Cynthia's nagging about grandchildren.

Also in attendance are Aaron's brother Ryan (performed by Martin Lawrence), flying from New York, and the patriarch’s brother Duncan with his grown kids Jeff and Elaine. By the way, Jeff is a smart pharmacology student, making and selling recreational drugs. Of course, Oscar, Elaine's boyfriend, takes one of his pills by mistake and has an acid trip during the whole movie. There are some more characters in these one big sad family, but don’t get confused.

Well, where is the plot? Diving into shenanigans and hijinks, of course. You will see the whole range of them: one nervous guy on acid trip, another being a hypochondriac, the third one all grumpy. The weird dwarf wants money for blackmail, Cynthia doesn't love her daughter-in-law, and of course the casket is knocked over, causing the delay for an hour (how long would it take YOU to put the body back in a box?)

According to the message boards on IMDb, the lack of humor isn’t the only drawback. People who haven't seen it are disgusted that the original white-casted movie is remade into mostly black-casted one. However, the movie has nothing to do with race concerns, as it wasn’t African-Americanized, simply Americanized.

iamezaz avatarRacism and promotion of a particular community. This is one instability in the US.It was inherited right from the beginning when martin luther king jr. gained independence from slavery in the US.Still going on in the US.What a disgustful world OMG:-((

No avataranother very bad movie not screened for critics. why? they dont want the bad reviews from critics before opening weekend. if the studio doesnt have faith in the movie you know its bad. only one movie not screened for critics turned out to be good. tombstone. the original, athough not great, was far better than this. why remake an english speaking movie that was just released a couple of years ago? if you like poorly written movies like norbit, cop out, or the or shes out of my league you may like this. if your more intelligent than this, you will not enjoy it. rewatch the first one, or better yet go to the theater and see hot tub time machine again. or wait for an R5, but NO CAMS!

Byond avatarI agree, we did inherit it from the beginning, but it was from the Brits. After all we were simply a colony of Brits and Dutch. And slavery was abolished in the USA, by one of our presidents not Martin Luther King, who was a fighter for "Equal rights" for all people, from the 1970s.

Things are still odd in some places in the USA when it comes to racism. Most notably the South. Seriously though, in Northern areas, we dont think about it. People mix freely. Im Irish and I have a black girlfriend, and no one gives us a glance. There are several other mixed couples on my street. US citizens voted in a black President, and that means that white people had to vote for him as well as black people. So I feel, in general its the best its ever been in the history of the USA for Equality between White and Black people.

And yes I agree, the world is disgusting. People make me sick.

terrillcase30655 avatarWell yes the south in some places is bad ..... I live in georgia and there's alot of racism.....as for the black president I didnt vote for him and its not because he's black its because I knew his quote "time for change" would screw up the country which it is..... I am not racist but I dont have to worry bout all that anyways ..... If people are racist its there choice its not one I would make but hey to each their own.....

No avataryes of coarse ive seen it. i would say bad things about a film ive never seen. ive thought movies would be bad in the past, but they turned out to be good. im not sure why movies are released on sat. where you are, but here there released on fri. so it was released yesterday where i am, not today. i saw it for a few reasons. the first one was already a decent movie, and i thought it wouldnt be that hard for chris rock to improve on it. i was wrong. i also saw it for the cast, but again was let down. if your easily amused, and you liked this movie great. its gonna take a lot more effort to make me laugh. im sorry, but having a guy run around trippin wasnt funny in the first one, wasnt funny in this one, and wasnt funny in any of the other hundred movies this happens in. its this type of lazy comedy that run through out this film. oh i know lets throw in a dwarf that will be funny. yea right. it wasnt even as good as the uninspired knocked up rip off shes out of my league. chris rocks stand up is smart, edgy, and brilliant. too bad this film is very very far from any of those things. unless your a teenager or a fan of poorly written/made movies.

4JIMi2sTEXAS0 avatarim not gonna watch it just because chris rock is in it, i cant stand him, hes prolly one of the most racist comedians out there, i haven't seen one movie/stand up comedy with him in it where he didn't make some kind of racial joke ... plus he's just plan ignorant!!!

No avatari really think you need to look up the definition og ignorant. you clearly dont know what it means. if you dont like chris rock thats fine. i personally think he needs to improve his acting skills, but i think his stand up is brilliant. because it is. if your offended thats fine too. edgy material is not for all. but chris rock the person is very intelligent, well informed, and well spoken. all comedians (specially political comedians like chris rock) have to be intelligent to be able to do what they do. calling some one ignorant just because you dont like what they do, well thats just ignorant.

chevychev avatari liked it i mean it wasn't the best but i laughed. you wanna know the stupidest movie out there has to be "why did i get married too" i wont give it away but the only words i uttered at the end were, "you got to be shittin me". i went to it with my wife but if i had to see it again i would bring an i pod and squeeze a lemon in my eyes.

No avatarwell in my opinion me and my wife went to go see it and we both thought it was hilarious.....the most intresting part was the fact that the comedians gave us some good laughs but to us it was mainly the other cast that made us laugh the most.....everybody is trying to compare the original to the remake, which is a waste of time.....thats like comparing dogs to cats.....but in reality n not being racist its always been a difference in comedy taste between the races...unfortunately what minoritys and majoritys think are funny are too different worlds apart....we don't see eye to eye when it comes to alot of things.....if you were to take a poll about the movie im sure you would see that majority if not all minoritys would say that it was hilarious.....just like majority we would say that our family wedding too was a good movie....where as if you took the same poll and asked if the original movie was funny, majority of we minoritys would say that the original was garbage n not funny....the point is that its all about taste and from a blackman's perspective chris rock, martin, and tracy morgan in the same movie = funny....furthermore the midget and the white guy on the acid trip........roflmao!!!!!! then danny glover on the roof naked..hey everything isssssssss all greeeen.............roflmao!

Dirk_Diggler avatar@ #1..Slavery in the US still...gimme a break. Aint no slavery here and people are created equal for the most part.. If any race is treated differently in the US its the white race.

Its those who let race rule their lives who are the true rasist. Slavery happened ages ago...also people act like USA was racist for bringing in slaves.. WHat about all the other countrys that were doing it before us. China,French,Germany... Learn the history.

No avatarwell that's a very intresting point@ dirk but i have to correct you about tha slavery thing, actually slavery was started in africa. it was a different thing back in those days it was more organized and wasn't a form of imprisonment and or punishment,as it became when other countries and nationality's screwed it up

No avatarbootlegger1, there is deeper meaning to what your are trying to say. its not a race thing at all. its an educated and non educated debate. comedy doesnt have barriers with race. i watch japanese comedies all the time, and find them very funny. im white, and i laugh all the way through chris rocks stand up. other black comedians as well. as long as their comedy is smart. this movie how ever is not. im trying to be very delicate about this, but its not easy. no matter what race, you could tell jokes about bathroom humour all day long to an educated person and an uneducated person. the uneducated person will laugh, while the educated person will not. this is why so many kids find poorly written films to be funny. like superhero movie or scary movie or even this movie. comedy is such a hard thing to pull off, but it can be done right like with hot tub time machine. this film was filled with the same old jokes recycled from other better films. i find it insulting that hollywood assumes the audience is stupid. movies like transformers, wolverine, and this are all made with the story added later instead of first. lets make a movie by throwing a bunch of black comedians in it. thats sure to make money. lets make transformers into a movie. that will make us rich plus we can keep remaking it over and over. all we have to do is put more robots each time.
