UN Claims Internet Is Misused as Extremist Mouthpiece

UN experts who advise the security council have recently called for Internet companies to respond to the exploitation of their services by various extremist groups using the Internet to recruit fighters and spout propaganda.
isus.th.jpg

The UN experts recommended that Internet and social media companies brief the security council committee monitoring sanctions against terrorists on measures taken to prevent such misuse. They explained that the scale of digital activity linked to Isis or al-Qaida affiliates had strategic implications for how the threat from extremists would evolve in the future.

The impact of the web on extremist groups was described in the report covering the global threats posed by al-Qaida, its affiliates and Isis, which included considerable human cost in recent months, with major bombings, assassinations and exploitation of millions people in Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen and Nigeria.

So, the experts pointed out that al-Qaida and its affiliates still posed a serious threat in many parts of the world, most importantly in Afghanistan, while associated groups had emerged in south and central Asia and Somalia. In the meantime, Southern Libya remained “a safe haven” for extremists planning attacks in the Maghreb and Sahel regions, and the UN claims they have been told of anti-aircraft guns and portable air defense systems in the hands of extremist groups.

Finally, the extremist network Jemaah Islamiyah reappeared in Indonesia and was recruiting such professionals as engineers and information specialists, which could pose a threat to south-east Asia.

No avatarThe msn, the us government, and lots of other places are the extremist. The us government actively trains Isis in Jordan and pays them $400/month which is a lot considering they normally get like $.50/day working. They also give them guns and weapons and probably drugs also. They give them shelter and provide food and medical assistance. Look it up if you don't believe me. Its only a search engine away. The us government also trained al-Qaida but decided they needed a new boogeyman so they made and financed isis. UN really needs to do some research as only takes less than 5 minutes to find the info online then they can verify it but its already been verified. the threat from extremists would evolve in the future, yes considering the us government pays them.

Embolism avatarPot calling the kettle black amongst many of their member countries most of the major powers that be and they keep their people cowed in fear of a previously non-existent threat they themselves have contrived using terrorists and paedophiles, drugs and crime as an excuse to curtail public privacy and freedoms of speech (just for starters),now we can expect pushes for further controls and constraints to the WWW because of unfounded fears about the internet being used for terrorist attacks, someday in the future we will all be having big brother breathing down our necks in the name of freedom,s`all BS.

Embolism avatarjust to clarify it is simple to have a cipher and pass messages within messages in emails ,it is easy to hard encrypt any message but the one that is innocuous will pass with less scrutiny and it will only be a pass-phrase like aunt gladys now sleeps with the fishes or some such or your dinner is in the dog and such can be said over a burner phone, trying to monitor and control all communications worldwide and relying on metadata to make correlations is sketchy at best and is like six degrees of separation so to globally monitor for terrorist cells spending billions worldwide and curtailing everyone's privacy is a pointless endeavour for the illusion of safety and only empowers Big Brother regimes,so much for democracy.

Embolism avatar[email protected] alludes to state sponsored Terrorism (look it up) the English and Americans trained and supported bin laden who led Al-Qaeda,they also helped put Saddam Hussein in Power (True)and 2 wrongs do not make a right, you can further argue that it was the CIA who started the conflict in Vietnam circa 1964,if we want a war on terrorism we don`t have to look far to see who creates and perpetuates terrorism in the world, who profits from it and who suffers because of it.

Embolism avatarwe aided ISIS and Al-Qaeda against the Assad's and virtually gave them Syria with help from 2012 up to when they moved onto Iraq to create a radicalised Muslim state, what America does not see in the interventions and coup d`etat`s is that they are not dealing with democracy and they never take into account religion or culture as a result when the allies went into help the people of Iraq supposedly from a despot we put into power many 100`000`s got killed in the process and Saddam Hussein after 3 dog and pony trials had one conviction against him from 1982 when he was supported by the allies after he gassed 187 Kurdish squatters who refused under pain of death to leave Iraq at which point the troops were sent in,if not for our `police action` Iraq would have had a sizeable army to defend itself from the insurgents and kept terrorism at bay in the region,American help in the war on terrorism has only created more Terrorists and they use that to create fear as a mechanism for controlling the world and radicalising more western Muslims with the hate from the weak minded nationalists created by their propaganda.

analogkid6103 avatarUS has had a history of mishandling the region all the way back to the end of WWII. And I dont see them actually learning anything from the mistakes made, a very sad state of affairs. Now a new puzzle palace of youngsters is working and I fear there will be more errors made. Very sad, tragic in fact.

No avatarIsn't it amazing how easy it seems to be for stupid people to rewrite history based on nothing more than dislike of the actual facts?

Embo, go back to school!

No avatarTdatb, what are you talking about? Calling people stupid and telling them to go back to school is so easy; debating the actual facts is not, for someone such as yourself, who doesn't bother to do any research on your own. You probably don't enjoy reading, and so miss out on a lot of the actual truth of things. Stop being so lazy. Let's have a debate on the USS Liberty, whether the CIA actually had anything to do with Sadaam Hussein coming into power, or whether Osama bin Laden was ever actually a suspect in 9/11, what the letters ISIS stand for, what al Qaeda's origins were, etc., etc.
It's easy to poke fun and ridicule; harder to promulgate a convincing argument based on actual research.
Don't be so damn gullible. Turn your TV off.

Embolism avatar@11 check out state sponsored terrorism (google it) you might learn something since everything I write is fact, and I don`t need to go to school I am already head and shoulders above any academic qualification you might seek in your lifetime and a developer of torrent applications and developer before you were out of diaper`s. (:^D)

FYI I believe no less than 5 plug-ins were made for Azureus alone after my suggestions to the team,so kiss my derrière.

Embolism avatarTo make it simple Carter and Reagan were both responsible for sponsoring terrorism, training the mooj in N/africa to fight against the Russian invasion in the 80`s,these became Al-Qaeda led by Osama Bin Laden (true)America creates then threatens terrorists,America gave support to Saddam Hussein as he was a Bathtist and not Sunni and continued their support despite his attempted attack on another Arab country, they also knew in advance of Saddam's gas attack in the 80`s and continued to support him (the same and only charge they later hung him for 30 years later in their coup d`etat.)North Vietnam in 64 it is documented that it was a CIA operation in the North that create the first sparks in the tinderbox that was Vietnam, and so on and so on American hands are not clean and neither are many others,if they want to make a war on terrorism they should look closer to home for the instigators as should the British since Tony Blair made a cool 25 million during his short term as prime minister on 250k a year salary no one needs a calculator to see the difference 250k to be PM and 25 Million to cause genocide against a civilian populace after the surrender of the Army and so on,the list is endless and body count is horrific and for what,Iraq now has six year olds recruited into ISIS or Al-Queada and 11 year olds making anti personal bombs,a good way to leave a once orderly country of 5 tribes under one ruler who didn`t allow terrorists, now the whole country is taken over by extremists and I am not going on holiday to Fallujah ,Basra or Bagdhad any time soon.In answer to USA supplying ISIS heres a little link h.t.t.p://21stcenturywire.com/2015/03/05/not-again-more-us-aid-missiles-shipped-to-al-qaeda-al-nusra-and-isis-in-syria-iraq/
