A few days ago, the operators of the largest pirate website in the country announced they quit the business because the site became too big to manage. But now they blame some American copyright group and for shutting down one of the most-visited sites in Portugal.
WarezTuga, the most popular pirate website in Portugal, recently announced it shut down because its operators can’t manage a project of such scale. The service ranked in the top 20 most popular websites in the country, competing with Twitter and Yahoo. Even today the site remains the 25th most trafficked domain in Portugal.
However, in just a few days, it appeared that WarezTuga had been under massive pressure from the film industry both locally and in the US. Soon the local anti-piracy group FEVIP revealed it was behind the shutdown, filing complaints against the pirate site a year ago along with now-defunct anti-piracy outfit ACAPOR acting on behalf of American companies.
The problem was that WarezTuga used U.S.-based Cloudflare, which shields the true location of servers, but this protection was unlocked by filing a complaint with the CDN service. After knowing the site’s location (Romania), the anti-piracy group headed off there and targeted webhost known as Alistar-Security. This seems to be a real reason for the site’s shutdown.
As for the now-defunct ACAPOR, which didn’t live to enjoy the victory, it became one of WarezTuga’s most aggressive opponents before being closed down. In the meantime, Portugal sees a legitimate alternative coming – Netflix will finally land on local shores in October 2015 and will apparently try to take hold in a market free of WarezTuga. On the other hand, industry observers believe that the pirate vacuum might be filled very soon.
