Japan console game manufacturers lose trillions of yen thanks to a new sort of pirated software which is armed with special hardware. So-called “magicoms” (magic computers) let the users to install illegal software they could download from the web onto such game consoles as the Nintendo Wii, the Nintendo DS and Sony PlayStations.
These devices, called magicoms, are now spreading promptly. They usually consist of a cartridge of the size of an authentic game disk and a memory card for storing the illegal software. Some pirates even modify the game consoles all by themselves. Their aim is to make hardware circumvent the anti-piracy systems installed by the manufactures. Nintendo Co. blames magicom hardware for almost 50% decrease in sales in EU in last months.
Talking about the worldwide, the company says its annual losses are about trillions of yen. The widespread use of illegal hardware, especially in Europe and the US, indicates that most users don’t consider their actions wrong or illegal. A year ago, Nintendo monitored ten overseas sites which allowed users to illegally download game software. The company found that it had been pirated over two hundred million times. If multiplied by the software unit price, the figure comes to ten billion dollar in lost sales.
Recently the new boom was registered on magicom kits, as they have been also developed for larger game consoles like Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo Wii. Japanese authorities tried to crack down on sites distributing the illegal software, but their number was too large to eradicate the piracy.
In the meantime, it has spread to Europe. According to a study carried out in the US at the end of last year, Italy the European leader in illegal downloads, then go Spain and France. Nintendo’s sales of DS software dropped in Europe by 45% in 2009, as compared to the previous year, which is considerably steeper than an 11% decrease in the US or a 7% fall in Japan for the same period.
The Japan government is now going to tighten anti-piracy legislation. This January, revisions to the Copyright Law came into effect. They prohibit downloading of illegal content like videos and music even for private use. It’s quite difficult now to prosecute offenders, but the industry is going to introduce some new Copyright Law revisions making the assembly and distribution of such devices as magicoms a crime.

i have been usin an r4 card in my ds for ages but didnt know that simular measures could be taken on the playstation does this include the ps3 does any1 have any more info concerning the ps3 please pm me
Thanks for all Sam. The cards or chips are great and are made for most systems that I can think of but the PS3. Some being harder then others to setup or install. I haven't seen anything new on the PS3 hack that was done by the kid that first cracked the iphone since i believe Sam posted about it months ago. Since then I am positive a hundred people have run with it. Just havnt looked hard enough yet. Every mod i have done has been for my girls kids so i never would of spent a dime on an nes system or game otherwise not to say she wouldn't have.

With the number of consoles being sold the company's main objective is to sell the highest number of consoles and make profit from them. So, they do not care about the pirated games
so much and they allow it rather than suppress it.
with all the money they make on only one game gears of war so SCREW THEM !!! WHAT THE HELL THE EXPECT PAYING 70 EUROS FOR A GAME THAT YOU FINISH MOSTLY AROUND THE THEN HOURS !!! i love my xbox and my pirat games and sites like this !!! keep hacking boys !!

They can't say that they have lost this or that amount of money because of the amount of downloads,as 90% of downloads are for games/movies that people wouldn't have bought anyway. If I download a game like Carnival Games it is to check out, I never would have bought it in the first place. with or without access to downloads.
lost trilions.......my foot....how much have they made.....mw2 is prime example 7 to 8 million users at £40-£50 a game.....do the maths.....to much greed with the companys
...to top it off...you buy a console and all the games...next thing theres a new console out and they stop making games for the old console.......that is what should be illegal....i still have my ps1...ps2 and ps3....but why did they stop making games readily available for the ps1...no money in it...they want to charge 50 pounds for each game......
tell them to stop moaning as im sure their wives are still driving the bentleys, and having their nails and hair done every 2 days at home in their 15 bed house with the six little rat dogs running around in their armani coats.....
Its like outlawing guns.
When you out law the guns,
the outlaws are bound to have it.
The easiest solution to eradicate piracy is to reduce the prices.
The proven example is that of MoserBaer in India.
The have released new DVD's at such low rates that the pirates
found it utterly non-profitable to duplicate.
So many of those pirated titles
of which the originals were released by MoserBaer dissappeared
from the market.
(Only the high priced were still available in the grey market).
So corporations wakrup! reduce the royalty and the end user price!.
Well, they are greedy. My son loves pokemon and wanted the new games. At 44.95 Euro each (now 39.95) that 90 Euro for two games. Ridiculous. If they were reasonably priced (hence: 10 Euro), I would not even think of downloading, but purchasing. No, instead, they make the games more and more expensive. I decided not to buy. I refuse. So, at the end. I did not copy, I just didn't buy. So, I contributed to their decline in sales, and not because of a magicom, but because of its price. Additionally, 90% of games are boring and people are sorry they bought it. The market is flooded with stupid overpriced games. I can accept a rediculous game if it were 5 Euro's, and take the loss, but the thing is, they are up and around 20 to 25 euro. Stupid. They actually WANT me to by a Magicom.
the ps3 has been cracked but george hotz the iphone hacker has cracked the ps3 but has yet to release the crack publicly

no offence but what's new here? people modify consoles since PS1, that would be since about 15 years ^^, to be able to play pirated copies; and, of course u r right ppl, games are much too expensive, thats why i'm gonna stay pirate ;) companies selling/producing games are so upset, like the poor bastards havent made enough cash so far :P *lmao*
where can you buy the hardware at
redchaos2354. he "supposed" cracked the code...yet there are still no crack/hacl for the ps3....half the problem is the fact that ps3 games are stuffed with buffers making the disk 30-40gb's. He has done nothing but to open the door for rippers....it will be another year at least until we see a ps3 rip and then it will be a ps4.
The videogame companies don't make any money on the consoles. It's the razor blade theory. Sell the razors at cost/at loss and make up for it by selling blades. They need to sell games to be profitable. That's why games are so expensive.
