Steve Huffman, after taking the position of Reddit’s interim CEO, defended many recent changes made by Ellen Pao, who has just resigned from the company. As Reddit users could see in his first Ask Me Anything online session, he outlined his priorities as CEO while also claiming that Pao’s controversial decisions will largely not be reversed.
At the same time, Huffman recognized that his first priority is to re-establish a relationship with the community, firstly through defusing the testy relationship between Reddit’s own staff and its community of voluntary moderators. This follows the recent row that resulted in subreddits being shut down by their moderators in protest. Huffman promised to build a team of community managers to improve relationships with voluntary moderators.
At the same time, Huffman did not criticize Ellen Pao, who was strongly criticized by the Reddit’s community. Instead, he thanked Pao, who joined Reddit at a time of crisis, and explained that the company would not reverse some of her changes. For instance, subforumes banned in June for harassing won’t return.
The new chief executive outlined a three-pronged policy for the company: nothing illegal; nothing undermining the integrity; and nothing causing other people harm or fear for their wellbeing. Harassment is not what he wants to see on the site. On the other hand, Huffman is going to improve the site’s transparency around censored or banned content and reasoning for it.
Finally, Huffman clarified that Victoria Taylor, Reddit’s former director of communications, whose departure sparked the subforums shutdown in protest, is not welcomed back to the company. He claimed that Taylor was let go for specific undisclosed reasons, and Reddit’s management would stand by that decision.
