The Federal Bureau of Investigation has cooperated with Romanian authorities to shut down three websites that were illegally distributing films and TV shows. Several individuals were detained and a number of domains were seized amid allegations of criminal copyright infringement, money laundering and tax evasion. Documents and computer hardware were also seized.
You can find thousands of “pirate” websites on the Internet these days, specializing in various areas. Some focus on movies or music only, while others take a more general approach. But all of them have one thing in common: their appetite for content created in the US. In other words, regardless of where they are in the world, they will attract the attention of Hollywood and their law enforcement partners. The same happened to Romania.
This investigation started 4 years ago over a trio of movie and TV show streaming websites. Today it finally ended with raids by police and officers from organized crime units. As a result, one of the country’s most popular streaming portals went offline: subscribers of Serialepenet.ro are now being redirected to a server operated by the Romanian Ministry of Justice. One of the most popular file-hosting services in the country is also down. The police carried out searches at 4 locations, including operator’s homes and companies that were allegedly offering services to the pirate websites.
According to media reports, after searching in the United States and Europe, the FBI and local police tracked down the operation to the capital of Romania, Bucharest, where the web-hosting company Xservers was located. It is alleged that the company is somehow implicated in laundering money from the piracy operations.
