The ministers claim that violation of copyright on the Internet on commercial scale should be punishable by up to 10 years in jail. The Intellectual Property Office and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills recently launched a consultation, which suggests to significantly increase the present maximum sentence of 2 years.
The consultation aims to equal online offences with equivalent large-scale copyright infringement of physical products.
The UK Intellectual Property Minister announced that the government takes copyright crime extremely seriously, since the local creative industries are worth over £7bn to the UK economy and should be protected from online criminal enterprises. Apparently, toughening penalties for commercial-scale infringement is supposed to offer greater protections to businesses and send a message to deter criminals.
In the meantime, the head of the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit points out that advances in technology and the popularity of the worldwide web push more and more criminals to online criminality, so the UK prosecution system should reflect the unit’s moves to a more digital world.
It should be noted that the British creative industries, including movie, TV and music, provide for more than 1.6 million jobs. The consultation aims to offer them further protection from large-scale copyright violations and provide a deterrent.
According to the Director General of the Alliance for Intellectual Property, the consultation in question is very welcome as the industry feels a clear anomaly in the way that Internet copyright infringement is treated by the current UK justice system. At the moment, online copyright violation is covered by the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 and is punishable by a maximum of 2 years in prison.

I like the "extremely seriously" part. We need younger politicians in office. These dinosaurs are fighting against the inevitable. Meanwhile, they fill our overcrowded jails with pirates because they don't know what else to do. Yeah, increasing jail time is a great crime deterrent; it has always worked before.
WE LIVE IN A NAZI STATE!!!!!!!!!
AYE and the same country that wants "PIRATES" to get 10 years, only gives wife murdering husbands 6 years....... WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE DO YOU THINK THAT SENDS!!! A-HOLES!
And so says the biggest fux$ing scroungers and freeloaders going, It wouldn't suprise me if half of those in power download sh1t and claim it back as expenses.
frosty you nailed it with the 6 years pure pish take are Government nothing but a bunch of Tw4ts

"Commercial scale" has no meaning. If I sell you my old lawnmower, that's commerce. If I give you my old rototiller the scale is the same but there is no "commerce". If they changed that to "for commercial purposes" I would support it. There's a big difference between fair-use sharers and true "pirates" who create & sell copies for profit. There's a big difference between a Robin Hood and a Blackbeard.

the biggest crims on the planet are these ass-hole polies
how about we start with the politicians and bankers out there who Fuked the worlds finance Aka GFC would'nt be any jails big enough to house these crimminals
It must be said for murder 10 years is life in the UK before 1st parole hearing,if a 10 year mandatory sentence was imposed there are 2 million users in the uk at least if each one was to be jailed for 10 years the cost to the Government to keep the incarcerated would be around 80,000,000,000 GBP I don`t think the UK government have a clue when they talk austerity in one breath then come out with this BS it beggars belief how stupid they are, time to see sense before we become like the Americans who have 1 in 10 citizens in jail.
|I think that the Government has it in mind to follow America down the rabbit hole as Iraq and Afghanistan cost the UK tax payers arond 2 trillion pounds and has led to impoverishment for many of its less well of citizens and even the sick and disabled are now under fire, how can anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together justify this when the industry only brings a total of 7bn a year into the country and they make proposals that will not only incarcerate over 2 million people but set this country back a century or more financially, absolutely ludicrous, whoever thought this up has got to be the biggest mashugana nodnik in the western hemisphere .the figure of 80,000,000,000 GBP is per year based on it costing 40,000 gbp per year to feed, clothe and keep incarcerated 1 man in our jails today per year so a total figure would have to be 800,000,000,000 GBP like to see them fit that into their budget.
