The authorities seized two domains – ShareBeast.com and AlbumJams.com, which belonged to websites pre-releasing copyrighted music. Now the sites show the banner informing everyone of the seizure. Of course, the entertainment industry welcomed the move.
While efforts of the copyright holders to hinder file-sharing websites gain momentum all over the world, especially in Europe, criminal actions in the United States remain quite rare.
Despite the fact that the US is home to Hollywood studios and major music labels, the country has taken a kind of a backseat – over the last years, only a few criminal actions were reported in the country. Now the FBI finally took action against two online services involved in music piracy. The Recording Industry Association of America complained that ShareBeast.com and AlbumJams.com were responsible for illegal distribution of popular music tracks – particularly those that hadn’t yet been officially released.
As a result, the authorities decided to immediately seize infringing domains in order to stop the rights violation. The music industry believes that ShareBeast was the largest unauthorized file-sharing service operating in the country. The RIAA claimed that it reported over 100,000 infringing files to the service for takedown. For comparison, the RIAA filed a similar number of complaints (118,000) with Google over the past two years. Of them, complaints about ShareBeast made up about 36,000 URLs per week. As for another site, AlbumJams, it was smaller and insignificant.
The music industry welcomed the move of the FBI and Department of Justice, but didn’t disclose what has happened to Sharebeast’s alleged operator.
